Islanders have had a long and proud tradition of responding to the call of duty both in times of peace and in conflict. This annual publication recognizes the importance of paying tribute to those who responded to our country’s needs, ordinary citizens who have made and continue to make extraordinary sacrifices to safeguard our peace. The Royal Canadian Legion recognizes the significance of this historic milestone. This year also marks the 150th birthday of our great country Canada. The Royal Canadian Legion thanks the brave men and women who bravely joined our Canadian military to protect our country and give us the freedom we have today. On behalf of the Executive Council of Prince Edward Island, the Royal Canadian Legion, its members, staff and Ladies Auxiliary I wish to express my gratitude to all of those who have made our commemorative booklet a success. He served during World War II with the North Novis and now resides is Summerside, PEI. He is a Life Member of the Legion. AYERS, Major James Emmett WWII, KOREA & PEACEKEEPING James was the son of the late Charles and Isabel (Goodwin) Ayers. He served in World War II, the Korean War and UN Peacekeeping. James passed away on December 15, 2010. He was the beloved husband of Anita Hennessey-Ayers (nee Miller), and the late Eileen Ayers (Walsh). James lived in Charlottetown, PEI and had three children and seven grandchildren. BAKER, Donald R. “Don” WWII Donald was born on July 8, 1914. He attended Margate School, Prince of Wales College and Mount Allison University from where he graduated in 1939. While serving in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II, Don rose in rank to command his own ships. He later served in the Naval Reserves with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Don married Jean MacEachern of Charlottetown in 1943 and after the war returned to Margate and purchased the family farm. For health reasons, he later gave up farming and established D. R. Baker Insurance in 1961. Earlier Don and Jean had established Cavendish Lodge and Cottages. In retirement, they enjoyed winters in Daytona Beach and took trips to visit family and their many friends. Don was a member of the Kensington Royal Canadian Legion Branch. Don passed away on December 27, 2003. She enlisted in the Army and worked in Halifax and Toronto. She has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for four years. BERNARD, Eugene Philip PEACETIME Bernard was born in Summerside, PEI in 1948. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Canada and Baden, Germany. BIRT, Allan Ewart PEACEKEEPER Allan was born in Charlottetown on March 1, 1959, the son of the late Norman and Bessie (Keeping) Birt. As a teenager, Allan and his late brother, Boyce, could be seen at many of the popular fishing holes around Queens County. Allen attended school at Spring Park, Queen Charlotte and Colonel Gray before joining the Canadian Armed Forces in July 1980. His military career spanned 27 years and included overseas stints in Germany and Croatia. Allan’s last posting was at CFB Gagetown New Brunswick where he was a well-respected Warrant Officer. Allan was very proud of the lovely home he and his wife Vicky (Ross) built in Lincoln, just outside of Fredericton. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Fredericton where he served on the church building committee. Among Allan’s hobbies were woodworking and cheering on the Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL.
