Message from The President

August 4th, 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I. Canada’s participation in the First World War shaped the country and Canadian identity. More than 650,000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders served in the First World War, with more than 66,000 of them losing their lives. The Royal Canadian Legion recognizes the significance of this historic milestone. One of our most important roles is to be the guardians of Remembrance. We do this as a solemn duty to you and to all Canadian veterans. We can never do enough to remember and pay tribute to those who voluntarily served and paid the ultimate sacrifice, those who have served our country with unwavering commitment, dedication and bravery.

On behalf of the Executive Council of Prince Edward Island Command, The Royal Canadian Legion, I wish to express my gratitude to our members, staff and Ladies Auxiliary, extend our thanks to all who provided assistance in making this project a great success. We are grateful to all who provided pictures and information of our veterans.

Through the efforts of this booklet, our organization will continue its strong support in the community to develop and fund programs for our veterans, senior and youth.

“We will remember them.” - « Nous nous souviendrons d’eux. »

80 / www.peilegion.com The Royal Canadian Legion Prince Edward Island Command For the Fallen Laurence Binyon

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children, England mourns for her dead across the sea. Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres. There is a music in the midst of desolation And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds encountered: They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again; They sit no more at familiar tables at home; They have no lot in our labour of the day-time; They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight, To the innermost heart of their own land they are known As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust, Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain; As the stars are starry in the time of our darkness, To the end, to the end they remain. (21st September, 1914)

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

A Voice From The Trenches - unknown author

To the men of loyal Canada We your comrades do appeal, Come join us in this awful strife Our honor for to shield; We’re here for God and righteousness Our cause is just and plain, Help us to fight, throw in our might The Allies cause to gain.

Like you we have our loved ones, We’ve left them far behind To the care of God we’ve left them, To them he will prove kind. For three long years or over We’ve stared death in the face, We’re getting weary, brothers, Come help us hold our place.

We’re in the trenches waiting You, our brothers, to receive, Do hustle up, dear brothers, The presure to relieve. We’ve got the enemy going, We’ve got God on our side, Do come in for the windup And all honours we’ll divide.

The Staff and Residents at the Dr. John M. Gillis Memorial Lodge would like to commend The Royal Canadian Legion on this War Time Service Recognition Booklet - Volume Ten. It is significant that we remember the mission of The Royal Canadian Legion in years to come. It should remind us of the great sacrifices many men and women made in order to protect our great country during times of war.
