Canada’s participation in the First World War shaped the country and Canadian identity. More than 650,000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders served in the First World War, with more than 66,000 of them losing their lives. The Royal Canadian Legion recognizes the significance of this historic milestone. One of our most important roles is to be the guardians of Remembrance. We do this as a solemn duty to you and to all Canadian veterans. We can never do enough to remember and pay tribute to those who voluntarily served and paid the ultimate sacrifice, those who have served our country with unwavering commitment, dedication and bravery. On behalf of the Executive Council of Prince Edward Island Command, The Royal Canadian Legion, I wish to express my gratitude to our members, staff and Ladies Auxiliary, extend our thanks to all who provided assistance in making this project a great success. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on March 13, 1941 and served on HMCS Grou as a Stoker. Petty Officer Acorn escorted convoys in the North Atlantic and served on D-Day in the English Channel. He was discharged on September 18, 1945. Alvin passed away in 1995. ACORN, Nicholas “Nick” AFGHANISTAN Nick, born to Alan Alcorn and Alice Peters, grew up in Dundas, Prince Edward Island and attended high school in Montague. An Armed Forces member in both the Navy and Army, Nick did one tour of duty in Afghanistan. He presently lives in Alberta. ANDERSON, Chester R. WWI Chester was born on May 14, 1898 in Cable Head to Howard and Lillian (Leslie) Anderson. He enlisted in 1917 and served in the 5th Siege Battery of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Prince Edward Island. After his discharge in 1919, Private Anderson married and moved to Florida where he lived until his death on January 14, 1963. Chester is buried there. WWI Earl was born in 1895 in Cable Head West to Howard and Lillian (Leslie) Anderson. He joined the 82nd Regiment, 26th New Brunswick Infantry in August 1914 and was among one of the first Islanders to enlist when war was declared. Sergeant Anderson was injured in one of the severest battles of the war. After his discharge in December 1919, Earl married and settled in Belcarres, Saskatchewan where he died and was buried in May 1965. ARSENAULT, Edmund Joseph WII & SPECIAL DUTY AREA Edmund was born in St. Nicholas, Prince Edward Island in 1921. He joined the Army and served in the Italian Campaign with the Royal Canadian Regiment. Edmund was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion branch in Miscouche for 25 years before he passed away in 1983. BARRY, Bernard WWI Bernard was born to John and Margaret (MacIntosh) Barry in St. Peter’s Harbour in 1896. After the death of his parents, he was brought to Pat McCarthy’s and later to Goose River to live with Frank Cummings’ family. Bernard joined the 105th Regiment and served as a Private in France where he was wounded. After his discharge, he returned to Goose River for a short time then moved to Charlottetown where he became an employee of the CNR Hotel. Bernard lived in Charlottetown until his death on July 13, 1973 and is buried in the People’s Roman Catholic Cemetery in Charlottetown. Lest We Forget / 7 8 / www.peilegion.com The Royal Canadian Legion Prince Edward Island Command BARRY, Patrick Joseph WWI Patrick was born to John and Margaret (MacIntosh) Barry in St. Peter’s Harbour on June 10, 1897 and lived with Clem and Maggie Sutherland in Cable Head after the death of his parents. He joined the 105th Battalion “B” Company, on January 12, 1916 and was sent overseas where he served as a Private. After the war, Patrick returned to Cable Head for a short time and upon his discharge on May 22, 1919, left for Ontario where he died on September 4, 1939. He is buried in Ontario. BEAIRSTO, Harold WWI Harold was born in 1894 in Malpeque, Prince Edward Island but grew up in Darnley. He enlisted in Calgary in December 1915 to serve in World War I and was wounded and sent home in 1918. BRADLEY, Frederick PEACETIME Frederick was born in Toronto, Ontario where he joined the Armed Forces at the age of 17. While in the Navy, he served aboard many ships, including HMCS Quebec (formerly HMCS Uganda), HMCS Bonaventure, HMCS Cayuga, HMCS Micmac, HMCS Kootenay and many others. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served in Canada and in the North Atlantic as a telegrapher working on escort ships during World War II. Bill was a member of Charlottetown Legion Branch 1 for sixty years before he passed away in 2010.

    SOME ISLAND ENTREPRENEURS David Cousins Produced with the financial assistance of the Institute's Public Policy Partnership with the Province of Prince Edward Island. Foreword This report, Some Island Entrepreneurs, is very much a work in progress. It represents a contribution toward a much neglected area of scholarship, the history of entrepreneurship in Prince Edward Island. Last year, I was invited to join the selection committee for the Prince Edward Island Hall of Fame -- as an historian advisor. Each year for the past four, this committee has selected three new inductees for the Hall of Fame. These new inductees are then announced at an annual Awards Gala, which is the major fundraising event for Junior Achievement of Prince Edward Island. As we pored over the nominations for prospective new inductees, debated the criteria, discussed the various aspects of entrepreneurship, and so on, an idea began to dawn on me. I thought of a way that the Institute of Island Studies could make a contribution to the work of the committee -- and to the field of Island scholarship generally. Why not hire a history graduate student to work with us for a summer, writing some profiles of Island entrepreneurs? We could invite some members of the Business Hall of Fame selection committee, past and present, to act as an informal advisory group, suggesting criteria for inclusion and helping to select the individuals who would be profiled. And that's what we did. The student hired was David Cousins, a young scholar from Bloomfield, PEI, entering the PhD program in History at York University in the fall of 2001.

Box 774, Charlottetown Prince Edward Island, C1A 7L3 Tel.: (902) 368-5895 Fax: (902) 368-6500 Government House Government House, also known as Fanningbank, is the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island, the personal representative in the province of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen of Canada. In 1834 Government House was built with funds advanced through an issue of Treasury Notes to be repaid with monies raised for the purpose by an Assessment on Land. It cost, in the currency of the day, £3,142.17.3, and was intended to serve as a Vice-Regal residence for the Lieutenant Governors of the then British colony of Prince Edward Island. The architectural design of the house is Georgian, with echoes of the Palladian tradition, and was the work of Isaac Smith. The wooden building was constructed by the architect in association with Henry Smith and Nathan Wright, a firm of local builders. The main structure is 95 feet long by 65 feet wide with two wings at the rear of the residence measuring 28 feet long by 25 feet wide, under which was placed a full Island sandstone foundation, most of which still supports the residence. The sills are 15 inches square and the floor joists are 4 inches by 11 inches and are laid 18 inches from center to center.

    THE GEOGRAPHY OF GOVERNANCE: An Overview of Boundaries Powers and Responsibilities on Prince Edward Island March 1999 prepared by J. A. Cousins Preface In administrative terms, Prince Edward Island has been described as "big engine, little body," because of the large amount of government that it devotes to a small, compact population of only 140,000 citizens. Behind the flippancy of that statement lies an intimidating reality: there are many, many layers to both governance and the provision of services in the province. An embarrassment of administrative units, each with its own set of boundaries, responsibilities, and powers, divide up the landscape and the populace. In many instances, these units grew up independently of one another, with little regard for the possibilities of overlap or duplication. The amount and variety of governance fuels a perception that Prince Edward Island is "over- governed." Whether or not the perception is accurate, the multiplicity of administrative units do complicate the business of governing. In the spring of 1998, the Institute of Island Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island engaged the Federation of Prince Edward Island Municipalities and the Department of Community Affairs (and Attorney General's Office) as partners in a project to map "the geography of governance" in the province. Together, we employed Andrew Cousins as a research associate. His mission was to compile a basic directory of the boundaries, powers, and responsibilities of each unit of local governance on Prince Edward Island, as well as how federal and provincial services are delivered at the local level. It is our duty to pay tribute to the more than 26,000 Canadian men and women in uniform who came to the aid of South Korea during the Korean War, and in particular the 516 Canadians who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend the values of peace and freedom. Your contributions will help to ensure that our Veterans shall be remembered for many years. We at the PEI Command of The Royal Canadian Legion and its Executive Council want to thank all that have contributed to the making of this booklet. If not for your support, and that of Fenety Marketing Services, we would not be able to produce these booklets. In this year 2016, let us remember that 90 years ago, The Legion was formed. By the end of World War 1, there were a total of 15 Veterans groups and a number of regimental associations representing former service members in Canada. Despite their common goal – to help returned servicemen in need – their efforts were fragmented and largely unsuccessful. In 1925, an appeal for unity led to the formation of the Dominion Veterans Alliance. The Legion was founded in November of that year in Winnipeg, Manitoba as The Canadian Legion of the British Empire Services League (BESL). It was incorporated by special Act of Parliament, Charter issued in July 1926.
