  • The Romsdal Museum Yearbook, 1997 Translated from the Norwegian by Christine Spangler
NORWEGIAN TEXTILE LETTER Vol. V No. 3 May, 1998 Damask Weaving in Romsdal, A Registration By Bjorn Austigard From The Romsdal Museum Yearbook, 1997 Translated from the Norwegian by Christine Spangler Introduction In 1980 I interviewed Johan A. Friisvold (1897-1996), a farmer from Ner-Frisvold in Eidsbygda, about the cultivation of linen on his farm. He explained that each year until about 1930, they grew an eighth acre of linen, which they retted, hackled and sent to Oslo to be spun. Later on in the conversation he 1 2 mentioned that his grandmother, Kari Friisvold (born Hatle) , had taught herself picture weaving, when she was young, and there were eight textiles she had woven. This awoke my interest. Upon closer questioning it turned out he was referring to damask. I photographed some of the textiles there. Later I asked about the loom and found that it was quite special. The question that presented itself was this: Was this the only example in Romsdal or were there others who practiced this art? After awhile I realized that there were others in the immediate area, who had woven on Kari Friisvold' s loom. I contacted Oline Bredeli, a weaving teacher at M0re and Romsdal Home Crafts School in K viltorp. Between the two of us we managed to find six looms of the same type. In 1981-82 Oline and some of her students set up one of the looms at the Romsdal Museum. In the years that followed many weaving specialists from various parts of the country have visited to study this "treasure." I know relatively little about weaving.

kapittel 2: innholdslister for 1921-1995 Innholdslister for årsskriftene i perioden 1921-1995 De første årene kom årsskriftene hvert år. Her er alle innholdslistene gjengitt, årsskrift for årsskrift. During the trip your guide will refer to the numbers in the map and, in this leaflet, you will find comments in your preferred language and some pictures. Enjoy your trip today, and we hope to see you again next time you are in Ålesund ! Map Information to this number on the map 1 Hello, and welcome to this excursion by LocalTrips AS. The trip starts and ends here at our Meeting Point at the cruise terminal. In Norway it is mandatory for bus passengers to wear seat belts. When checked by police, passengers will be fined if they are not wearing seat belts on the bus. Today, you will see many famous places. We will stop in several places where toilets might be available. The bus has a toilet available as well. We sell water (NOK 20) on the bus. 2 On our right hand side we now see the Brusdalsvatnet, which is the drinking water reservoir for Ålesund and several other municipalities in the area. Ålesund is famous for its good drinking water. It’s between 33 and 102 meters deep. Swimming and bathing are not allowed in this lake. 3 Sjøholt is a central point for traffic in the area. All tourists going to Trollstigen and Geiranger, turn right at Sjøholt. Every year there is a popular blues festival in Sjøholt with many international musicians. 4 The mountain between Vestnes and Sjøholt is called Ørskogfjellet, and was previously a famous ski resort for skiing and winter sports.
