All Rights Reserved. 2 This thesis titled In the Company of Modern Men: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary Hollywood Comedies by NICHOLAS D. BAMBACH has been approved for the School of Film and the College of Fine Arts by Ofer Eliaz Assistant Professor of Film Elizabeth Sayrs Interim Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT BAMBACH, NICHOLAS D., M.A., August 2016, Film In the Company of Modern Men: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary Hollywood Comedies Director of Thesis: Ofer Eliaz This thesis discusses the increasing visibility of masculine identity in contemporary Hollywood comedies. I examine how shifting developments in economic, societal, cultural, and gender relations impacted the perception of cinematic masculinity. The men, more specifically white and heterosexual, in these films position themselves as victims and, as a result, turn to alternative outlets to ease their frustrations and anxieties. In order to broadly survey the genre of the past two decades, I focus on three consistently popular character tropes in Hollywood comedies: slackers, office workers, and bromantic friendships. All the male characters discussed throughout the thesis are plagued by their innermost anxieties and desires that compromise their gendered identities. However, these films resort to a regressive understanding of masculinity and functions within the dominant heteronormative structures. This thesis demonstrates how Hollywood comedies present a contradictory and multifaceted image of modern masculinity.

Title: Simpsorama 09 Nov After the Springfieldians have buried a time capsule a freak storm brings Bender, the robot from 'Futurama' from the future to kill Homer but Simpsons Comics Simpsorama befriends him instead. Other Futurama characters then appear and point out that they must kill Simpsons Comics Simpsorama because, due to the time capsule, he has given rise to mutant rabbits which will destroy New New York. The answer is for the Simpsons to go into the future and round up the mutants and send them into space. Written by don minifie Simpsorama is a fantastic Simpsons episode with a very well written storyline and a ton of hilarious scenes. I was completely entertained from start to finish, and I know people say that crossovers are usually cheesy and mediocre ways of bringing two different franchises together, but this certainly wasn't. Simpsons Comics Simpsorama am a huge fan of both the Simpsons and Futurama, they are both created by Matt Groening and the humour is very similar so it didn't feel like they were bringing Simpsons Comics Simpsorama shows together that have little in common. It was truly magical seeing characters such as Homer and Bender interact and I have high hopes that they make more Simpsorama's in the future,I would be perfectly fine if they wanted to make one every year, the same way they do with Treehouse of Horror,it would be a great way to keep Fry and the gang alive and it would be something cool and different for the Simpsons to do.

His father took him to see "Jurassic Park" in 1993 in Newcastle, England. Accompanied by the astonishing visuals and John Williams' blazing music, alongside with a big carton of caramel-coated popcorn, this event as a powerful emotional experience marked a new interest in Wilkinson's life towards films and film music. In high school, Wilkinson took an interest in jazz to the extent that he pursued further education in jazz piano and composition at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. After winning an award for a ballad composition and soon after another award for a composition for mixed choir, Wilkinson got an opportunity to compose for several nationally broadcasted television series and commercials and he began actively pursuing a career in composing for film, while continuing to teach and perform. In 2006 Wilkinson received his Master's degree and in 2007 he scored his first theatrical feature film. Wilkinson was accepted to study at the film-scoring program of the USC Thornton School of Music and received several notable grants towards studies in the US. Wilkinson was selected to mentor with multi-Oscar-nominee composer James Newton Howard, and received the opportunity to orchestrate and conduct for an episode of award-winning television series ‘LOST’.

  • Racial Terror and the Struggle for Freedom in the HBO Series Lovecraft Country
Elena Apostolaki PhD candidate a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities Cologne University of Cologne Racial Terror and the Struggle for Freedom in the HBO Series Lovecraft Country HBO's Lovecraft Country (2020-) is based on Matt Ruff's 2016 novel and explores the weird and horrifying world of H.P. Lovecraft and the very real Jim Crow-era racism that plagued the U.S. during that time. The series, developed by Misha Green and produced by Jordan Peele, places Black protagonists at the center of a Lovecraftian horror story. The Black characters have to face shoggoths, grand wizards, magic but they also have to deal with and escape very realistic horror, in the form of the racist police violence and white supremacy. They almost always respond to the terror brought upon them by whiteness, whether it is real or supernatural. By bringing the Black characters—who were often the metaphorical villains of Lovecraft's stories— into the center of representation, the series allows for a new layer of meaning to Lovecraft's fear of the other. Lovecraft's horror "was borne from white Americans' malignant, baseless fear of the other—of Black people, of Latinx people, of immigrants, of Jews" (Foussianes, 2020). Lovecraft Country's horror, however, is borne from a fear of the very real violence that results from racism and prejudice. Lovecraft's racist beliefs are well documented, and both Ruff's book and Peel's take on the show seek to invert his xenophobic preoccupations, using monsters inspired by him to highlight the darkness of the Jim Crow South.
