Jordan Peele's Us to Open the 2019 Sxsw Film Festival JORDAN PEELE’S US TO OPEN THE 2019 SXSW FILM FESTIVAL Austin, Texas — January 8, 2019 — South by Southwest® (SXSW®) Conference and Festivals (March 8–17, 2019) announced the world premiere of Jordan Peele’s Us as its Opening Night film for th the 26 edition of the SXSW Film Festival on Friday March 8, 2019 in Austin, Texas. After sending shockwaves across contemporary culture and setting a new standard for provocative, socially conscious horror films with his directorial debut, Get Out, Academy Award®-winning visionary Jordan Peele returns with another original nightmare. “We are crazy excited to world premiere the most anticipated film of 2019 from the creative powerhouse that brought us Get Out,” said Janet Pierson, Director of Film. “We honestly couldn’t imagine a more perfect film to kick off the 2019 SXSW Film Festival.” Set in present day along the iconic Northern California coastline, Us, stars Oscar® winner Lupita Nyong’o as Adelaide Wilson, a woman returning to her beachside childhood home with her husband, Gabe (Black Panther’s Winston Duke), and their two children (Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex) for an idyllic summer getaway. Haunted by an unexplainable and unresolved trauma from her past and compounded by a string of eerie coincidences, Adelaide feels her paranoia elevate to high-alert as she grows increasingly certain that something bad is about to befall her family. After spending a tense beach day with their friends, the Tylers (Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker, Cali Sheldon, Noelle Sheldon), Adelaide and her family return to their vacation home to discover the silhouettes of four figures standing in their driveway. Us pits an ordinary American family against a terrifying and uncanny opponent: doppelgängers of themselves. Peele produces for his Monkeypaw Productions, alongside Monkeypaw creative director Ian Cooper, in the company’s first solo production venture. Also producing are Sean McKittrick and Jason Blum. Written and directed by Peele, Us will be released by Universal Pictures on Friday, March 15, 2019. SXSW Film Festival will release its Feature slate on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 (except for Midnighters and Festival Favorites). Midnighters, Festival Favorites, Shorts, Episodic Pilot Competition, Virtual Cinema, Music Videos and Title Sequence Competition will be announced on Wednesday, February 6, 2019. SXSW is proud to be an official qualifying festival for the Academy Awards® Short Film competition. His father took him to see "Jurassic Park" in 1993 in Newcastle, England. Accompanied by the astonishing visuals and John Williams' blazing music, alongside with a big carton of caramel-coated popcorn, this event as a powerful emotional experience marked a new interest in Wilkinson's life towards films and film music. In high school, Wilkinson took an interest in jazz to the extent that he pursued further education in jazz piano and composition at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. After winning an award for a ballad composition and soon after another award for a composition for mixed choir, Wilkinson got an opportunity to compose for several nationally broadcasted television series and commercials and he began actively pursuing a career in composing for film, while continuing to teach and perform. In 2006 Wilkinson received his Master's degree and in 2007 he scored his first theatrical feature film. Wilkinson was accepted to study at the film-scoring program of the USC Thornton School of Music and received several notable grants towards studies in the US. Wilkinson was selected to mentor with multi-Oscar-nominee composer James Newton Howard, and received the opportunity to orchestrate and conduct for an episode of award-winning television series ‘LOST’.

  • Racial Terror and the Struggle for Freedom in the HBO Series Lovecraft Country
Elena Apostolaki PhD candidate a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities Cologne University of Cologne Racial Terror and the Struggle for Freedom in the HBO Series Lovecraft Country HBO's Lovecraft Country (2020-) is based on Matt Ruff's 2016 novel and explores the weird and horrifying world of H.P. Lovecraft and the very real Jim Crow-era racism that plagued the U.S. during that time. The series, developed by Misha Green and produced by Jordan Peele, places Black protagonists at the center of a Lovecraftian horror story. The Black characters have to face shoggoths, grand wizards, magic but they also have to deal with and escape very realistic horror, in the form of the racist police violence and white supremacy. They almost always respond to the terror brought upon them by whiteness, whether it is real or supernatural. By bringing the Black characters—who were often the metaphorical villains of Lovecraft's stories— into the center of representation, the series allows for a new layer of meaning to Lovecraft's fear of the other. Lovecraft's horror "was borne from white Americans' malignant, baseless fear of the other—of Black people, of Latinx people, of immigrants, of Jews" (Foussianes, 2020). Lovecraft Country's horror, however, is borne from a fear of the very real violence that results from racism and prejudice. Lovecraft's racist beliefs are well documented, and both Ruff's book and Peel's take on the show seek to invert his xenophobic preoccupations, using monsters inspired by him to highlight the darkness of the Jim Crow South.

  • Hammer Museum 2019 Gala to Honor Judy Chicago, Jordan Peele
For Immediate Release: May 31, 2019 Contact: Nancy Lee, 310-443-7016, [email protected] Hammer Museum to Honor Judy Chicago and Jordan Peele at Annual Gala in the Garden, October 12 (Los Angeles, CA)—The Hammer Museum announced today that trailblazing feminist artist Judy Chicago and filmmaker Jordan Peele will be honored at this year’s Gala in the Garden on Saturday, October 12, 2019. The annual celebration recognizes artists and innovators who have made profound contributions to society through their work. “We are thrilled to honor Judy Chicago and Jordan Peele, two artists whose groundbreaking works resonate across our political and cultural landscape,” said Hammer Director Ann Philbin. “Judy Chicago is a pioneer of feminist art and education; her installation The Dinner Party is a landmark artwork of the last fifty years. Jordan Peele has emerged as one of today’s most incisive social commentators through his genre-busting films Get Out and Us. Judy and Jordan, each in their own way, have redefined their fields and opened doors for more artists to follow.” The highly anticipated event attracts cultural and civic leaders in Los Angeles, as well as artists, collectors, and patrons of the arts. Last year’s event, which honored Margaret Atwood and Glenn Ligon, raised $2.6 million for the museum. Chef Suzanne Goin of Lucques will once again create the menu. Proceeds from the gala will support the Hammer’s dynamic and internationally acclaimed exhibitions and public programs. Past honorees include Hilton Als, Laurie Anderson, Margaret Atwood, John Baldessari, Mark Bradford, Joan Didion, Ava DuVernay, Dave Eggers, Frank Gehry, Robert Gober, Matt Groening, Todd Haynes, Diane Keaton, Mike Kelley, Barbara Kruger, Tony Kushner, Glenn Ligon, Paul McCarthy, Joni Mitchell, Catherine Opie, Lari Pittman, Miuccia Prada, Charles Ray, Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman, Kara Walker, and Alice Waters.

  • Editing Within the Thriller Genre
Thriller is a favourite genre to many and has been around for longer than most think. Originally starting as a genre of literature, it has evolved into one of the most sought after genres within film. Early notable works such as Alfred Hitchcock's films in the mid 1900s have paved the way for the genre and solidified it’s editing and cinematography into what we have today. Despite its humbling beginnings in the mid 1900s the techniques, although somewhat repetitive, still manage to stay relevant today and have only gotten more advanced with time.
