His father took him to see "Jurassic Park" in 1993 in Newcastle, England. Accompanied by the astonishing visuals and John Williams' blazing music, alongside with a big carton of caramel-coated popcorn, this event as a powerful emotional experience marked a new interest in Wilkinson's life towards films and film music. In high school, Wilkinson took an interest in jazz to the extent that he pursued further education in jazz piano and composition at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. After winning an award for a ballad composition and soon after another award for a composition for mixed choir, Wilkinson got an opportunity to compose for several nationally broadcasted television series and commercials and he began actively pursuing a career in composing for film, while continuing to teach and perform. In 2006 Wilkinson received his Master's degree and in 2007 he scored his first theatrical feature film. Wilkinson was accepted to study at the film-scoring program of the USC Thornton School of Music and received several notable grants towards studies in the US. Wilkinson was selected to mentor with multi-Oscar-nominee composer James Newton Howard, and received the opportunity to orchestrate and conduct for an episode of award-winning television series ‘LOST’. Wilkinson received his Graduate Certificate in 2008 alongside with the prestigious Harry Warren grant and now resides in Los Angeles as a working professional. Official Fan Club Site—www.juicenewtonfanclub.com 2016 Spring Newsletter Hi Everyone, The support and love for Juice has never been as powerful and as proven as it was over the last few months. This issue of the newsletter will feature some new information about Juice and will introduce you to the 2016 “O” Award winner. Paul 1 A Hit All Over Again I am pleased to announce that Juice is once again on the charts with the song that is as classy as she is. ‘Angel of The Morning’ is once again on the charts thanks to the blockbuster movie ‘Deadpool.’ (more on this later) A whole new generation of fans are listening to Juice and have joined the fan club or in- quired about the song. Congratulations Juice!! 'Deadpool' Director Tim Miller and Songwriter Chip Taylor on the Film's Soft-Rock Center- piece, 'Angel in the Morning' (http://www.billboard.com/articles/business/6882938/behind-deadpool-soundtrack-tim-miller-chiptaylor-juice-newton-angel-in-the-morning) “There'll be no strings to bind your hands / Not if my love can't bind your heart.” That’s the first thing you hear over the Marvel logo in the No. 1 movie in the country, Deadpool. As '80s pop country singer Juice Newton sings about an illicit love affair she just can’t shake in her 1981 hit “Angel of the Morning,” Ryan Reynolds’ f-bomb blasting anti-hero gets busy kicking ass. It makes zero sense on the surface, and yet director Tim Miller says that the song was the only track con- sidered to open the superhero flick that grossed another $55 million over the weekend to easily hold on to the No.

Exploring Cultural Differences in Game Reception: JRPGs in Germany and Japan Stefan Brückner1, Yukiko Sato1, Shuichi Kurabayashi2 and Ikumi Waragai1 Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University1 5322 Endo, Fujisawa, Kanagawa 252-0882 Japan +81-466-49-3404 [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Cygames Research2 16-17 Nanpeidai, Shibuya, Tokyo 150-0036 Japan +81-3-6758-0562 [email protected] ABSTRACT In this paper we present the first results of an ongoing research project, focused on examining the European reception of Japanese video games, and comparing it with the reception in Japan. We hope to contribute towards a better understanding of how players’ perception and evaluation of a game are influenced by their cultural background. Applying a grounded theory approach, we conducted a qualitative content analysis of articles from German video game websites, user comments, written in response to these articles, as well as Japanese and German user reviews from the respective Amazon online stores and Steam. Focusing on the reception of three Japanese RPGs, our findings show that considerable differences exist in how various elements of the games are perceived. We also briefly discuss certain lexical differences in the way players write about games, indicating fundamental differences in how Japanese and German players talk (and think) about games. Keywords Japanese games, reception, Germany, user reviews, QDA, grounded theory INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been a rise in attempts to utilize the vast amounts of text on digital games available online, by using natural language processing (NLP) methods.

  • “Why So Serious?” Comics, Film and Politics, Or the Comic Book Film As the Answer to the Question of Identity and Narrative in a Post-9/11 World
ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. The results were analyzed by critically examining the source material, with a cultural criticism emerging regarding the progression of this subgenre of motion pictures as meaningful work. “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Miami University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Communications Mass Communications Area by Kyle Andrew Moody Miami University Oxford, Ohio 2009 Advisor ___________________ Dr. Bruce Drushel Reader ___________________ Dr. Ronald Scott Reader ___________________ Dr. David Sholle TABLE OF CONTENTS ACKNOWLEDGMENTS .......................................................................................................................... • The Emergence and Development of the Sentient Zombie: Zombie
The Emergence and Development of the Sentient Zombie: Zombie Monstrosity in Postmodern and Posthuman Gothic Kelly Gardner Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy Division of Literature and Languages University of Stirling 31st October 2015 1 Abstract “If you’ve never woken up from a car accident to discover that your wife is dead and you’re an animated rotting corpse, then you probably won’t understand.” (S. G. Browne, Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament) The zombie narrative has seen an increasing trend towards the emergence of a zombie sentience. The intention of this thesis is to examine the cultural framework that has informed the contemporary figure of the zombie, with specific attention directed towards the role of the thinking, conscious or sentient zombie. This examination will include an exploration of the zombie’s folkloric origin, prior to the naming of the figure in 1819, as well as the Haitian appropriation and reproduction of the figure as a representation of Haitian identity. The destructive nature of the zombie, this thesis argues, sees itself intrinsically linked to the notion of apocalypse; however, through a consideration of Frank Kermode’s A Sense of an Ending, the second chapter of this thesis will propose that the zombie need not represent an apocalypse that brings devastation upon humanity, but rather one that functions to alter perceptions of ‘humanity’ itself. The third chapter of this thesis explores the use of the term “braaaaiiinnss” as the epitomised zombie voice in the figure’s development as an effective threat within zombie-themed videogames.
