The organization later became one of the few hospices in North and South Carolina to attain Level Four status, which is the highest current level in the program. What this means is that our hospice is committed to training staff and volunteers regarding the unique needs and care of our veteran population. Hospice trains veteran volunteers to serve veteran patients. In addition, Hospice conducts a cer- emony for each veteran under our care. Mrs. Lorna Putnam, pictured below, was one of the latest patients to be honored for her service. Surrounded by her family, Hospice staff presented her with a pin, and a certificate in a ceremony at Oakland Living Center. Mrs. Putnam, 95, was formerly from Illinois and Iowa before moving to Rutherford County many years ago. Mrs. Putnam joined the WAVES in 1943 at the age of 20. WAVES is an acronym of Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, as part of the U.S. Navy’s corps of female members created after Pear Harbor. During World War II, some 100,000 WAVES served in a wide variety of capacities enabling men to go to sea to defend the coun- try. Mrs. Putnam tested so well in her basic training at the base located at Hunter College in the Bronx that she went on to Aerographer’s (weather school) near Lakehurst Naval Base in New Jersey. She was transferred to her base in Quonset Point, Rhode Island where she predicted the weather for pilots throughout the United States. Mrs. Putnam met her Marine husband in Rhode Island and was married in her uniform in the base chapel. He later went to the South Pacific, and she was honorably discharged to return to Iowa to give birth to her first son. Mrs. Putnam achieved the rank of 3rd class Petty Officer, US Navy, during her service. Pictured on the front cover of this publication are two HOCF veteran volunteers who are assigned to HOCF veteran patients in the Polk County and Landrum, SC service area. Dr. Fred Ringe, left, a New York native and chi- ropractor, enlisted in the Air Force in 1957 and was accepted into flight school. He was commissioned as a pilot, receiving his navigator badge. He spent 11 years in active duty and retired as a captain. He moved to the Tryon area in 1980. John Archer, right, is from Tennessee and now lives in Columbus. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corp, and after serving, joined the National Guard in Memphis. During the Korean War, John served in the Army in Korea for eleven months. He retired from the military with a rank of Master Sergeant in the US Air Force. He served nine years in active duty and 34 years in the National Guard. Both men recently received hospice and veteran training so they can serve their fellow veteran HOCF patients. Hospice constantly needs more men and women like Fred and John to become involved in the We Honor Veterans Program. Hospice makes every effort to match veteran volunteers with similar patients. Hospice Chaplains Play Vital Role on the Team Hospice care is provided by a team of professionals including a physician, nurse, certified nursing assistant, social worker, volunteer and chaplain. Hospice of the Carolina Foothills chaplains all have masters degrees in divinity, some are board certified and others have a cer- tificate of thanatology, which requires special training in meeting the needs of terminally ill patients. HOCF chaplains also have Clinical Pastoral Education credits through a hospital system. Hospice chaplains are trained to supplement the care provided by the patient and family’s spiritual provider or provide spiritual support when the patient doesn’t have a regular pastor. Because of the training HOCF chaplains have, they are able to help meet the needs of patients in diverse settings. They are members of the hospice interdisciplinary team providing valuable information to assist the other members of the team care for that patient and family. Chaplains often times conduct funerals, they provide grief support groups for the community, and they even provide baptisms when requested. When needed, hospice chaplains also find spiritual providers in other communities for patients when their particular religion is not represented locally. MAHEC Purchases Former Columbus Office The Mountains Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) in Asheville purchased the former HOCF Columbus office behind St. Luke’s Hospital on June 29. MAHEC plans to partner with Isothermal Community College to offer a dental assistant program that includes classroom and clinical training for students on site. This will be the only school of its kind in the area. St. Luke’s Hospital was given first right of refusal to purchase the property but chose not to do so in 2017. Hospice moved its Columbus office from this almost 10,000 square foot building to a less than 2,000 square foot office located in Columbus Commons, 155 West Mills Street, Suite 108. The South Carolina staff moved to the Smith Phayer Inpatient Unit in Landrum. All plaques and artwork from the former HOCF office were moved to the Inpatient Unit in Landrum. Hospice plans to utilize funds from the sale of this property to ensure residents of Polk County, and residents of Greenville, Spartanburg and Cherokee Counties can receive care regardless of the ability to pay.
