    Pacific Insects 6 (4) : 665-687 December 30, 1964 SPIDERS OF THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS: CATALOG AND BIBLIOGRAPHY1 By Theodore W. Suman BISHOP MUSEUM, HONOLULU, HAWAII Abstract: This paper contains a systematic list of species, and the literature references, of the spiders occurring in the Hawaiian Islands. The species total 149 of which 17 are record­ ed here for the first time. This paper lists the records and literature of the spiders in the Hawaiian Islands. The islands included are Kure, Midway, Laysan, French Frigate Shoal, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii. The only major work dealing with the spiders in the Hawaiian Is. was published 60 years ago in " Fauna Hawaiiensis " by Simon (1900 & 1904). All of the endemic spiders known today, except Pseudanapis aloha Forster, are described in that work which also in­ cludes a listing of several introduced species. The spider collection available to Simon re­ presented only a small part of the entire Hawaiian fauna. In all probability, the endemic species are only partly known. Since the appearance of Simon's work, there have been many new records and lists of introduced spiders. The known Hawaiian spider fauna now totals 149 species and 4 subspecies belonging to 21 families and 66 genera. Of this total, 82 species (5596) are believed to be endemic and belong to 10 families and 27 genera including 7 endemic genera. The introduced spe­ cies total 65 (44^). Two unidentified species placed in indigenous genera comprise the remaining \%. Seventeen species are recorded here for the first time. In the catalog section of this paper, families, genera and species are listed alphabetical­ ly for convenience.

THE Ecribellatre have been divided into two sub-sections or groups, viz., the Haplogynre and Entelegynre, and of these the former con­ tains six families: Sicariidre, Leptonetidre, Oonopidre, Hadrotarsidre, Dysderidre, and Oaponiidre. In the male the last joint of the maxillary palpi is more or less cylindrical, and slightly modified in form, and differs but little in general appearance from that of the female; the copulatory organ consists of a cylindrical or globose lobe, with a more or less prolonged extension, and this may be either straight, curved, or twisted, and acts as the conductor of the styli, the orifice of which is situated at the tip.

VAN DER MERWE Foord, S.H., Anna S. Dippenaar-Schoeman and M. van der Merwe. 2002. A check list of the spider fauna of the Western Soutpansberg, South Africa (Arachnida: Araneae). Koedoe 45(2): 35–43. Pretoria. ISSN 0075-6458. By virtue of its geological history and geographical location the Soutpansberg consti- tutes a refuge for a high diversity of organisms. The Western Soutpansberg forms part of the Savanna Biome and is presently the area with the highest concentration of Nat- ural Heritage Sites in South Africa. A unique private initiative is under way to improve its national and international conservation status in a bid to conserve the mountain. A checklist of the spider species of the Western Soutpansberg collected over a five-year period is presented. Forty-six families, represented by 109 genera and 127 species have been collected. Of the species collected, 81 (64 %) were wandering spiders and 46 (36 %) web builders. The Thomisidae have the highest number of species (15) followed by the Araneidae and the Salticidae with 10 species each. Ninety-six genera are repre- sented by a single species. Ninety six percent of the species collected are new records for the area. This survey is the first for the area and forms part of the South African National Survey of Arachnida (SANSA). FAMILY PISAURIDAE The Pisauridae is a large cosmopolitan family of spiders represented in South Africa by 12 genera and 36 species of which 8 are endemic species. • Common names : Pisauridae (nursery web spiders); Eupros- thenops (funnel-web pisaurids); Thalassius (fish eating spiders). • Life style : the family has diverse life-styles and have reverted from web-building to free-living wanderers. • Body size : 8-30 mm (males more slender). • Diagnostic characters : colour : cryptic with carapace frequently decorated with white longitudinal bands or symmetrical patterns of black on brown or grey on black, abdomen with paler longitudi- nal bands or spots; carapace : longer than wide with blunt tuber- cles on the anterolateral edge of clypeus in some genera; eyes : 8 arranged in 2 rows (4:4), 3 rows (4.2.2) or 4 rows (2.2.2.2) with at least one pair of eyes on shallow tubercles, some genera with cluster of setae between anterior eyes; abdomen : elongated, tapering towards back; legs : relatively long, sometimes slightly laterigrade with numerous spines. • Web and retreat : web : absent to diverse type of webs are made varying from large sheet-webs with funnel retreats to sheet webs made on plants or the soil surface; retreat : in web builders the funnel part of web is used as a retreat. In the plant dwellers the leaf is slightly bent downwards and a short tube-like retreat with both ends open, is constructed in the curve of the leave. • Habitat : the pisaurids are found in a variety of habitats and are common inhabitants of grassland, savanna, desert and forest areas.

Se presentan la única especie de este género presente en ampliaciones de distribución, y una breve territorio nacional, contradiciendo lo señalado diagnosis para reconocer y diferenciar las por los anteriores autores.

The spitting spider Scytodes fusca Walckenaer, 1837 is recorded for the first time in Central Europe from both Germany and Slovakia. The species was found in two localities, within the Botanical Garden in Bratislava (Slova- kia), specifically from a heated greenhouse with high humidity, and the “Tropical Islands”, a tropical holiday resort in Krausnick (Germany). It seems that this Pantropical species has probably been introduced here along with imported plants. A description of diagnostic characters, as well as figures, is given. Neunachweis der exotischen Speispinne Scytodes fusca (Araneae, Scytodidae) in Mitte- leuropa aus Deutschland und der Slowakei. Die Speispinne Scytodes fusca Walckenaer, 1837 konnte erstmals für Mitteleuropa in Deutschland und der Slowakei nachgewiesen werden. Die Funde stammen aus dem Botanischen Garten in Bratislava (Slowakei) sowie aus dem Freizeitbad „Tropical Islands“ in Krausnick (Deutschland). Es wird ver- mutet, dass die pantropische Art durch Zierpflanzen eingeschleppt wurde. Die charakteristischen Merkmale der Art werden beschrieben und abgebildet.
