  • Continuity and Change: the History of Ancient Iran in Three Works by A.T. Olmstead, Roman Ghirshman and Richard N. Frye
Iranica Antiqua, vol. XLII, 2007 doi: 10.2143/IA.42.0.2017883 CONTINUITY AND CHANGE: THE HISTORY OF ANCIENT IRAN IN THREE WORKS BY A.T. OLMSTEAD, ROMAN GHIRSHMAN AND RICHARD N. FRYE BY James D. CLARK Abstract: In this essay the author looks at History of the Persian Empire by A.T. Olmstead (1948), Iran: from the Earliest Times to the Islamic Conquests by Roman Ghirshman (1954), and Richard N. Frye’s (1963) The Heritage of Persia, three important and established histories that cover the ancient period of Iranian history. The three historians and their respective works are compared and some of the similarities as well as differences in how they have treated the period are pointed out. Keywords: Iran, Persian Empire, Achaemenians, Seleucids, Parthians, Sasanians Iran, like Mesopotamia — present-day Iraq — and Egypt, is one of the few lands of the Middle East whose history and culture extend from before the fall of the Sasanian dynasty and into the distant past. It is a history fraught with a complex of peoples, traditions, languages, migra- tions, and wars. It was characterized by a constant give and take between many cultures as they came into contact. It has, besides the cultural dimension, economic, social, and political aspects as well; those forces that are always working at any one time in history and acting to shape a society. But alongside that impressive array of forces that promote diversity in all societies runs a parallel current of continuity in the case of Iran. Although oftentimes possessing a subtlety difficult to pinpoint, there is an element that persists across time and that scholars continue to identify as “Persian” or “Iranian.” In one sense, it might even be said that that quality, manifested as it was in art, language, society, and poli- tics, is the continuity of a host of different aspects from various ancient civilizations that, in the long course of Persian existence, conquest, and hegemony, became parts of what have come to be termed collectively as “Iranian” civilization.

  • Iranian Economy in the Twentieth Century: a Global Perspective*
Iranian Studies, volume xx, number x, April 2009 Iranian Economy in the Twentieth Century: A Global Perspective* Hadi Salehi Esfahani, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and M. Hashem Pesaran, University of Cambridge and USC August 28, 2008 Abstract This paper examines the transformation of the Iranian economy through the Twentieth Century within a global context. At the start of that century, the Iranian economy had long remained stagnant, poor, and largely agrarian, with a marginal role in the world economy. By the turn of 21st century, Iran had transformed into a complex and relatively large economy with important consequences for the economies of the Middle East and other parts of the world. While the initial conditions and the evolution of domestic institutions and resources played major roles in the pace and nature of that transformation, relations with the rest of the world had crucial influences as well. This paper focuses on the latter forces, while taking account of their interactions with domestic factors in shaping the particular form of economic development in Iran. We study the ways in which the development of the Iranian economy has been affected by international price movements and by the ebbs and flows of trade, investment, and economic growth in the rest of the world. In considering these effects, we also analyze the role of domestic political economy factors and policies in enhancing or hindering the ability of domestic producers to respond to external challenges and opportunities. JEL Classifications: N15, O11, O53 Keywords: Development and Growth, Political Economy, Oil Prices, Global Development and the Iranian Economy ———————————— * We would like to thank Ahamd R.

The Most Sovereign of Masters: The History of Opium in Modern Iran, 1850-1955 Abstract This study surveys a century of commercial opium production in Iran, from 1850 to 1955. From an insignificant contributor to the global opium market, Iran became within a few decades an important exporter, turning to the market between 5-10% of the entire global production of opium. Opium-poppy cultivation and opium production formed part of a larger process of transition within the agricultural sector to cash-crop production. Under the growing pressure of increasing imports of European manufactured goods and the collapse of the local manual industries, the production of cash-crops, and particularly opium, was intended to balance Iran's trade deficit. The combination of timely political changes in China, technological improvements in steamboat navigation and a high-quality product, enabled the successful integration of Iranian opium within the global opium market.

The captive mind is uncritical and imitative in its approach to ideas and concepts from the West.1 Discussions on the problem of mental captivity coincided with efforts to indigenise the social sciences in the post-war period when most of the Third World gained formal independence.2 At the theoretical level, indigenization refers to the generation and use of concepts and theories from indigenous intellectual traditions, historical experiences, and cultural practices. This essay represents such an activity and indicates an avenue for the application of the theory of state formation developed by the Arab historical sociologist, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Khaldun to the case of the Safavi Iranian polity (907/1501-1134/1722).3 In doing so, a number of theoretical problems in the study of Safavi state formation that arise from the application of Marxism and worlk- system theory are touched upon.
