ABSTRACT In the Achaemenid Empire( 331-559 B.C.)there were different tribes with various cultures. Each of these tribes spoke their own language(s). They mainly included Iranian and non- Iranian languages. The process of changes in the Persian language can be divided into three periods, namely , Ancient , Middle, and Modern Persian. The Iranian languages in ancient times ( from the beginning of of the Achaemenids to the end of the Empire) included :Median,Sekaee,Avestan,and Ancient Persian. At the time of the Achaemenids ,Ancient Persian was the language spoken in Pars state and the South Western part of Iran.Documents show that this language was not used in political and state affairs. The only remnants of this language are the slates and inscriptions of the Achaemenid Kings. These works are carved on stone, mud,silver and golden slates. They can also be found on coins,seals,rings,weights and plates.The written form of this language is exclusively found in inscriptions. In fact ,this language was used to record the great and glorious achivements of the Achaemenid kings. -

HIST 6824 Modern Iran Rome 459 Professor M.A. Atkin Wednesdays: 5:10-7:00 Office: Phillips 340 Spring 2014 Phone: 994-6426 e-mail: [email protected] Office hours: M & W: 1:30-3:00 and and by appointment Course Description: This seminar will take a thematic approach to the period from about the year 1800 (when a state with roughly the dimensions of modern Iran emerged) to 1989 (the end of the Khomeini era.) Recurrent themes of the course include problems of state building in the context of domestic weaknesses and external pressure, ideas about reform and modernization, the impact of reform by command from above, the role of religion in politics, and major upheavals, such as the Constitutional Revolution of 1906, the oil nationalization crisis of 1951-1953, and the Islamic Revolution of 1978-1979. The specific topics and readings are listed below. The seminar meetings are structured on the basis of reading and discussion for each week’s topic. Further information on the format is in the section “Course Readings” below. In addition to the weekly reading and discussion, students are expected to write a term paper which draws on their readings for the course. The term papers are due on Monday, April 28, 2014.) Details of the paper will be provided separately. A student who already has a strong background in the history of modern Iran may prefer to focus on a research paper. Anyone who is interested in that option should inform me of that at the end of the first meeting. Early in the semester, such students should consult with me to define a suitable research project. -

Its history dates back almost 5000 years. It is situated at a strategic juncture in the Middle East region of South West Asia. Evidence of man’s presence as far back as the Lower Palaeolithic period on the Iranian plateau has been found in the Kerman Shah Valley. And time and again in the course of this long history, Iran has found itself invaded and occupied by foreign powers. Some reference to Iranian history is therefore indispensable for a proper understanding of its subsequent development. The first major civilisation in what is now Iran was that of the Elamites, who might have settled in South Western Iran as early as 3000 B.C. In 1500 B.C. Aryan tribes began migrating to Iran from the Volga River north of the Caspian Sea and from Central Asia. Eventually two major tribes of Aryans, the Persian and Medes, settled in Iran. One group settled in the North West and founded the kingdom of Media. The other group lived in South Iran in an area that the Greeks later called Persis—from which the name Persia is derived. -

It is an ancient land of the utmost variety in nature, art and architecture, languages, literature and culture. When the Greeks (from whom European civilisations JEL Classification: B10 descend) came across the Iranians first, Persian Iranians were ruling that country as the Persian empire, and they called it ‘Persis’. Just as when the A14 N10 Persians first came into contact with Ionian Greeks, they called the entire Greek lands ‘Ionia’. To this day Iranians refer to Greece as Ionia (=Yunan) and the Greeks as Ionians (=Yunaniyan). Sumário O povo curdo representa a maior etnia do mundo sem pátria. Habitualmente recordados pelo imaginário colectivo no quadro do martírio que sofreram na Segunda Guerra do Golfo, mas também pelo activismo terrorista do PKK, importa perceber verdadeiramente quem são. Nesta dissertação abordamos de forma sumária a história deste povo, atravessando necessariamente a memória da área geográfica onde se incluem, o Médio Oriente, e as convulsões que marcaram os ciclos da sua evolução. O povo curdo e o seu território são indissociáveis, pelo que, até ao final da primeira Guerra Mundial, a abordagem é conjunta. Depois da definição artificial de fronteiras realizada pelos Tratados subsequentes aos Acordos de Paz, a dissertação concentra- se na experiência do Curdistão no Iraque. Com efeito, o território curdo no Iraque, a sua história, evolução e marcas da actualidade foram objecto de uma análise mais detalhada. Trata-se da experiência mais próxima da independência que os curdos vivenciaram, excluindo o caso excepcional da república de Mahabad. Com esta dissertação pretendemos desmontar a história de um povo praticamente desconhecido e tentar perceber até que ponto a experiência pioneira de um Estado quase independente poderia potenciar uma futura independência, ou experiências similares, nos vizinhos territórios curdos da Turquia e do Irão. -

From Oxus to Euphrates: The Sasanian Empire Speaker Profiles Dr. Ida Meftahi currently holds a Visiting Assistant Dr. Samra Elodie Azarnouche, is Associate Professorship in contemporary Iranian culture and Professor at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in society at the Roshan Institute for Persian Studies, Paris (PSL Research University Paris) where she teaches University of Maryland. She completed her doctoral the history of Zoroastrianism. Her research focuses on studies at the University of Toronto’s Department of Late Antiquity, Sasanian culture and religion, Iranian Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations and was a mythology and Middle Persian literature. Among her * postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for the Arts and publications are an edition of a Middle Persian text on Humanities at Pennsylvania State University. Her first book, Gender and Sasanian reali (Khosrow fils de Kawād et un page, 2013) and several Dance in Modern Iran: Biopolitics on Stage was released in May 2016 articles on rituals, priestly institutions, technical vocabulary, and (Routledge Iranian Studies Series). In addition to teaching Zoroastrian myths. interdisciplinary courses on Modern Iran, she is the director of the Lalehzar Digital Project, a component of the Roshan Initiative for Digital Dr. Touraj Daryaee, is a historian of ancient Iran, Humanities, as well as faculty advisor for Roshangar: Roshan apecializing on the Sasanian Empire. 1 Persia: Place and Idea Persia/Persians and Iran/Iranians “Persia” is not easily located with any geographic specificity, nor can its people, the Persians, be easily categorized. In the end Persia and the Persians are as much metaphysical notions as a place or a people. Should it be Iran and the Iranians? Briefly, “Persia/Persians” is seldom used today, except in the United Kingdom or when referring to ancient Iran/Iranians – c. sixth century bc to the third century ad. Riza Shah (1926–1941) decreed in 1935 that Iran be used exclusively in official and diplomatic correspondence. Iran was the term commonly used in Iran and by Iranians, except from the seventh to the thirteenth centuries. Fol- lowing the Second World War, oil nationalization, the Musaddiq crisis, and subsequent greater sensitivity to Iranian nationalism, the designa- tion Iran/Iranian became widely used in the west. Until recently the use of Persia/Persians was often rejected among Iranians themselves. Iran/Iranian also had its own hegemonic dimension, especially from the experience of some of Iran’s multi-ethnic population. The usage of Persia/Persian, however, was revived by Iranian expatriates in the post- 1979 era of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This common usage among them represents an attempt on their part to be spared the opprobrium of “Iran” and its recent association with revolution, “terrorism,” hostages, and “fundamentalism,” while Persia/Persian suggested to them an ancient glory and culture – a less threatening contemporary political identity. Nevertheless, the political ramifications of either Persia or Iran cannot be escaped. Above all, the history of Persia/Iran is the history of the interaction between place and the peoples who have lived and who currently live there. -

chapter 14 Pādshāh Khatun An Example of Architectural, Religious, and Literary Patronage in Ilkhanid Iran bruno de nicola In comparison to sedentary societies, women in the Turkic-Mongol nomadic and seminomadic societies showed greater involvement in the political sphere, enjoyed a greater measure of financial autonomy, and generally had the freedom to choose their religious affiliations.1 Some women advanced to positions of immense power and wealth, even appointed as regent-empresses for the entire empire or regional khanates. Such examples included Töregene Khatun (r. 1242–46), Oghul Qaimish (r. 1248–50), and Orghina Khatun (r. 1251–59).2 Other women such as Qutui Khatun (d. 1284) in Mongol-ruled Iran accumulated great wealth from war booty, trade investment, and the allocation of tax revenues from the newly conquered territories.3 Through their unique prominence in the empire’s socio-economic system, elite women had an active role in financially supporting and protecting cultural and religious agents. Our understanding of the impact that Chinggisid women had on the flourishing of cultural life in the empire as a whole, and in the Ilkhanate of greater Iran in particular, remains poor, however. The historical record tells us little about the role that Chinggisid female members played as patrons of religious and cul- tural life, especially when comparted to the relative wealth of references to female influence in the political and economic arenas. However, abundant accounts show that female elite members from the local Turkic-Mongol dynasties who ruled as vassals for the Mongols, or had been incorporated into the ranks of the ruling Chinggisid household 270 Pādshāh Khatun | 271 through marriage, played a pivotal role as cultural and religious patrons.
