HIST 6824 Modern Iran Rome 459 Professor M.A. Atkin Wednesdays: 5:10-7:00 Office: Phillips 340 Spring 2014 Phone: 994-6426 e-mail: [email protected] Office hours: M & W: 1:30-3:00 and and by appointment Course Description: This seminar will take a thematic approach to the period from about the year 1800 (when a state with roughly the dimensions of modern Iran emerged) to 1989 (the end of the Khomeini era.) Recurrent themes of the course include problems of state building in the context of domestic weaknesses and external pressure, ideas about reform and modernization, the impact of reform by command from above, the role of religion in politics, and major upheavals, such as the Constitutional Revolution of 1906, the oil nationalization crisis of 1951-1953, and the Islamic Revolution of 1978-1979. The specific topics and readings are listed below. The seminar meetings are structured on the basis of reading and discussion for each week’s topic. Further information on the format is in the section “Course Readings” below. In addition to the weekly reading and discussion, students are expected to write a term paper which draws on their readings for the course. The term papers are due on Monday, April 28, 2014.) Details of the paper will be provided separately. A student who already has a strong background in the history of modern Iran may prefer to focus on a research paper. Anyone who is interested in that option should inform me of that at the end of the first meeting. Early in the semester, such students should consult with me to define a suitable research project. -

Since the publication of the last issue of the newsletter, the online election for the new president was held and my good friend Touraj Daryaee now stands as the President-Elect. Also, Elena Andreeva and Afshin Marashi joined the Council. I am very grateful to the collective team of colleagues on the board for their commitment to our society. Preparation for the forthcoming Eleventh Biennial Conference of The International Society for Iranian Studies is underway and the head of the Conference Committee, Florian Schwarz, and Programme Committee Chair Camron Amin together with their colleagues on both committees are doing their best to make the Eleventh Biennial another successful conference, this time in Vienna. I look forward to seeing all our members at the beginning of August in Vienna. From Oxus to Euphrates: The Sasanian Empire Speaker Profiles Dr. Ida Meftahi currently holds a Visiting Assistant Dr. Samra Elodie Azarnouche, is Associate Professorship in contemporary Iranian culture and Professor at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in society at the Roshan Institute for Persian Studies, Paris (PSL Research University Paris) where she teaches University of Maryland. She completed her doctoral the history of Zoroastrianism. Her research focuses on studies at the University of Toronto’s Department of Late Antiquity, Sasanian culture and religion, Iranian Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations and was a mythology and Middle Persian literature. Among her * postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for the Arts and publications are an edition of a Middle Persian text on Humanities at Pennsylvania State University. Her first book, Gender and Sasanian reali (Khosrow fils de Kawād et un page, 2013) and several Dance in Modern Iran: Biopolitics on Stage was released in May 2016 articles on rituals, priestly institutions, technical vocabulary, and (Routledge Iranian Studies Series). In addition to teaching Zoroastrian myths. interdisciplinary courses on Modern Iran, she is the director of the Lalehzar Digital Project, a component of the Roshan Initiative for Digital Dr. Touraj Daryaee, is a historian of ancient Iran, Humanities, as well as faculty advisor for Roshangar: Roshan apecializing on the Sasanian Empire. He is the author of Undergraduate Journal for Persian Studies. a number of books, including Sasanian Persia: The Rise and Fall of an Empire, IB Tauris 2009; and The Oxford Handbook of Iranian History, OUP, 2012. He has also Dr. Stephen H. Rapp Jr., is Professor of Eurasian translated Middle Persian texts on the history of the and World History at Sam Houston State University. -

1 Persia: Place and Idea Persia/Persians and Iran/Iranians “Persia” is not easily located with any geographic specificity, nor can its people, the Persians, be easily categorized. In the end Persia and the Persians are as much metaphysical notions as a place or a people. Should it be Iran and the Iranians? Briefly, “Persia/Persians” is seldom used today, except in the United Kingdom or when referring to ancient Iran/Iranians – c. sixth century bc to the third century ad. Riza Shah (1926–1941) decreed in 1935 that Iran be used exclusively in official and diplomatic correspondence. Iran was the term commonly used in Iran and by Iranians, except from the seventh to the thirteenth centuries. Fol- lowing the Second World War, oil nationalization, the Musaddiq crisis, and subsequent greater sensitivity to Iranian nationalism, the designa- tion Iran/Iranian became widely used in the west. Until recently the use of Persia/Persians was often rejected among Iranians themselves. Iran/Iranian also had its own hegemonic dimension, especially from the experience of some of Iran’s multi-ethnic population. The usage of Persia/Persian, however, was revived by Iranian expatriates in the post- 1979 era of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This common usage among them represents an attempt on their part to be spared the opprobrium of “Iran” and its recent association with revolution, “terrorism,” hostages, and “fundamentalism,” while Persia/Persian suggested to them an ancient glory and culture – a less threatening contemporary political identity. Nevertheless, the political ramifications of either Persia or Iran cannot be escaped. Above all, the history of Persia/Iran is the history of the interaction between place and the peoples who have lived and who currently live there. -

The Culinary Culture of Iran The Islamic Republic of Iran is located in the Middle East.¹ Most of the population (90- 95%) is Sh'i' Muslim, and this is also the state religion.² The diet and culinary traditions are influenced by this faith as well as the food native to the area.² Due to Iran's location and the history of the Persian Empire, the food culture has been influenced by many other countries, including Russia, India, and China¹ Muslim Dietary Considerations Halal: used to describe allowed foods in the Muslim diet.³ Foods are considered Halal based on how they are processed, and obtained, among other factors.³ Haram: used to describe foods that are not allowed.³ Pork, pork products, alcohol, and meats that are not slaughtered following Halal practices are haram.³ Ramadan: A month of fasting from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk.⁴ Traditional Foods Bread is served with most meals and is often used as utensil as well.⁵ Rice is prepared in a variety of ways.⁵ It may be cooked with vegetables or meat and fruit.⁶ Rice is served as a side dish or a main dish.⁶ Rice is consumed daily in Iran, as a part of most meals.⁷ Lamb and chicken are used more widely than beef. Iran’s national dish: chilaw-kabab, which is cooked rice served with kebab.⁵ Meat and vegetable stews (khorest) which are often served with rice.⁶ Spices commonly used include: mint, saffron, parsley, cinnamon, cardamom and turmeric.⁶ A pomegranate walnut stew (fesenjan) is served at weddings.⁶ This is a historic stew, with beginnings traced back as far as 515 BC.⁶ Eating Patterns Breakfast is not a large meal and may be skipped.² The midday meal is the most important meal of the day and often centers around rice.⁷ Dinner may be eaten after 8pm.² Historically, utensils were used infrequently, but the Westernization of Iranian culture has introduced utensils as common. -

Peacock1 Abstract Firdawsi’s Shahnama, the completion of which is traditionally to around 400/1010, is generally thought to have been a failure at first. It is said by both traditional accounts and much modern scholarship to have been rejected by its dedicatee Sultan Mahmud of Ghazna, and its contents of ancient Iranian legends, transmitted from earlier sources, are widely considered to have been out of step with the literary tastes of the Ghaznavid period. This article reassesses the reception of the Shahnama in the Ghaznavid period, arguing that evidence suggests neither its style nor contents were outdated, and that its tales of ancient Iranian heores had a great contemporary relevance in the context of the Ghaznavid court’s identification of the dynasty as the heir to ancient Iran. The extent to which Firdawsi can be shown to have relied on pre-Islamic sources is also reevaluated Key words Firdawsi – Shahnama – Ghaznavids – pre-Islamic Iran – Persian poetry The reception history of few books can be as well-known as the Shahnama: the allegedly cool reaction of sultan Mahmud of Ghazna (d. 421/1030) when presented with the work around the year 400/1010, and the biting satire on the ruler Firdawsi is claimed to have penned in response, together form part of the Shahnama legend.2 Firdawsi’s hostile reception by the rival poets of Ghazna, for instance, became a topic of miniature painting in manuscripts of the poem,3 and lines such as the satire were interpolated to underline the point.4 Today, the poem’s initial flop is usually taken for granted, and has been attributed to both its form and its contents, which are assumed to be purely antiquarian,5 bereft of any contemporary relevance. -

Summer 2010 A Passion for Persian Culture: Gifts Support Iranian Studies BY MEREDITH KUNZ Bita Daryabari is passionate about Persian culture. Her goal is to share this enthusiasm with the Stanford community—and, by extension, with all Americans. “I want to expose Americans to the poetry and arts of Iran, to educate the American public about what Iran is all about—its literature and history,” she explains. This effort is especially important in light of current events. “Given the high level of political tension between the two countries today and the critical need to avoid violent conflict, I thought this was a great time to foster more understanding about the other side of Iran,” says Daryabari. The Bay Area philanthropist has now provided a generous $5 million in gifts to further the study of Persian language and literature at Stanford. When combined with matching funds from the Hewlett Foundation, Daryabari’s support adds up to a total of $6.5 million in endowment, lending significant momentum to the university’s Iranian Studies Program. Daryabari’s first commitment to the program, made in 2007, set up an endowment to fund courses, lectures, and conferences on Persian art and literature. She also created the Bita Prize for Literature, an annual award given to recognize an Iranian artist or writer who has achieved excellence in his or her field. Iranian novelist Goli Taraghi and poet Simin Behbahani have both been honored. This gift also funds a visiting professorship, enabling renowned artists, writers, and scholars from Iran to teach at Stanford. Last fall, she expanded her investment in the program by endowing the Bita Daryabari Professor- ship in Persian Studies, to be held by a teacher and scholar with expertise in Persian language and literature. -
