Provincetown Film Society’S Jamaica on Film Festival Proudly Celebrates the Screening of Babylon at This Year’S Provincetown Film Festival WELCOME TO PROVINCETOWN LIKE NOWHERE ELSE The oldest continuous art colony in America provides the perfect setting for the 21st Provincetown Film Festival. Since the turn of the last century, Provincetown has been a haven for artists, writers, filmmakers and other so-called “dissents.” Embraced by the small Portuguese fishing village at the end of the world, the artistic community continues to thrive here in Provincetown along with the town’s support of all freedom of expression. The Festival’s legacy of presenting thought-provoking and innovative independent films and programs continues this season with our line-up of movies, parties and special programs including our very special keynote speaker, former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe whose best seller, The Threat: How the F.B.I. Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump, seems destined to be the basis for a film. Award winning actor, writer and director John Cameron Mitchell (HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH) defines the festival’s Filmmaker on the Edge award, once again presented by Festival favorite John Waters whose town hall conversation with Mitchell is a must-see event of the week. In addition to enjoying our line-up of films and events we invite you to explore our town and walk in the footsteps of Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams, and our beloved poet Mary Oliver, among so many other great talents. Along the way please take a moment to thank our sponsors. The inns, restaurants, and local attractions, along with the ongoing support of town government, make this Festival possible and keep alive the creative expression of independent film. provincetownfilm.org • 508.246.0475 • #pi2019 1 TABLE OF CONTENTS COMMUNIQUE FESTIVAL SPONSORS ....................... 9 STAFF & BOARD ........................... 15 HAPPENINGS PARTIES & EVENTS .................... 26 PIFFplus .............................. 34 MODERN LOVE LIVE ................... 44 PIFFtalks .............................. 46 FESTIVAL HONOREES ................. 50 THE FILMS SPOTLIGHT FILMS .................... 60 NARRATIVE FILMS .................... 70 DOCUMENTARY FILMS ................ 96 SHORTS PROGRAMS ................. 120 SPECIAL SCREENINGS ................ 132 FILM FESTIVAL SCHEDULE ........... United Nations Human Rights Council BACKGROUND GUIDE Vancouver Model United Nations The Twentieth Annual Session | January 29–31, 2021 Dear Delegates, William Tsai Secretary-General My name is Nick Liu, and I am thrilled to serve as your Director at UNHRC at VMUN 2021. Alongside myself are Rafeeq Kassam-Jiwani, your Chair, and Katrina Sun, your Assistant Director, who are both juniors at West Point Grey Academy. All three of us on the staff team are looking forward to a weekend filled with thoughtful discourse, intense Vivian Gu debate, and memorable moments. Director-General I am currently a senior student at Fraser Heights Secondary School, and I have been Derek Wu immersed in the Model United Nations community ever since I entered high school. I Chief of Staff often think back to why I fell in love with MUN: the committees filled with young diplomatic minds, sparks of clashing debate, and midnight crises filled with betrayals and Tyler Rosenzweig surprises. Albeit cliché, my career would not be worth it if not for the close friends forged Director of Logistics from the occasional late-night rants and countless embarrassing moments. I am sure each delegate is familiar with the difficulties that COVID-19 has brought the past year; however, that has not changed the value Model United Nations possesses in Joyce Chen training public speaking and diplomacy skills. In light of those challenges, I implore you USG General Assemblies to take this year’s online conference as an opportunity to research more about the unprecedented and unexpected situations that can affect the human rights of migrant Ethan Jasny workers and whistleblowers.

  • The American Film Musical and the Place(Less)Ness of Entertainment: Cabaret’S “International Sensation” and American Identity in Crisis
humanities Article The American Film Musical and the Place(less)ness of Entertainment: Cabaret’s “International Sensation” and American Identity in Crisis Florian Zitzelsberger English and American Literary Studies, Universität Passau, 94032 Passau, Germany; fl[email protected] Received: 20 March 2019; Accepted: 14 May 2019; Published: 19 May 2019 Abstract: This article looks at cosmopolitanism in the American film musical through the lens of the genre’s self-reflexivity. By incorporating musical numbers into its narrative, the musical mirrors the entertainment industry mise en abyme, and establishes an intrinsic link to America through the act of (cultural) performance. Drawing on Mikhail Bakhtin’s notion of the chronotope and its recent application to the genre of the musical, I read the implicitly spatial backstage/stage duality overlaying narrative and number—the musical’s dual registers—as a means of challenging representations of Americanness, nationhood, and belonging. The incongruities arising from the segmentation into dual registers, realms complying with their own rules, destabilize the narrative structure of the musical and, as such, put the semantic differences between narrative and number into critical focus. A close reading of the 1972 film Cabaret, whose narrative is set in 1931 Berlin, shows that the cosmopolitanism of the American film musical lies in this juxtaposition of non-American and American (at least connotatively) spaces and the self-reflexive interweaving of their associated registers and narrative levels. If metalepsis designates the transgression of (onto)logically separate syntactic units of film, then it also symbolically constitutes a transgression and rejection of national boundaries. In the case of Cabaret, such incongruities and transgressions eventually undermine the notion of a stable American identity, exposing the American Dream as an illusion produced by the inherent heteronormativity of the entertainment industry.

Ex-Intelligence Officers, Others See Plusses in WikiLeaks Disclosures By Global Research Theme: Intelligence Global Research, December 09, 2010 Institute for Public Accuracy 9 December 2010 The following statement was released today, signed by Daniel Ellsberg, Frank Grevil, Katharine Gun, David MacMichael, Ray McGovern, Craig Murray, Coleen Rowley and Larry Wilkerson; all are associated with Sam Adams Associates for Integrity in Intelligence. WikiLeaks has teased the genie of transparency out of a very opaque bottle, and powerful forces in America, who thrive on secrecy, are trying desperately to stuff the genie back in. The people listed below this release would be pleased to shed light on these exciting new developments. How far down the U.S. has slid can be seen, ironically enough, in a recent commentary in Pravda (that’s right, Russia’s Pravda): “What WikiLeaks has done is make people understand why so many Americans are politically apathetic … After all, the evils committed by those in power can be suffocating, and the sense of powerlessness that erupts can be paralyzing, especially when … government evildoers almost always get away with their crimes. …” So shame on Barack Obama, Eric Holder, and all those who spew platitudes about integrity, justice and accountability while allowing war criminals and torturers to walk freely upon the earth. … the American people should be outraged that their government has transformed a nation with a reputation for freedom, justice, tolerance and respect for human rights into a backwater that revels in its criminality, cover-ups, injustices and hypocrisies. Odd, isn’t it, that it takes a Pravda commentator to drive home the point that the Obama administration is on the wrong side of history.

Back home, his overly proper suburban parents succeed in driving him nuts in record time, as they do everything in their power to sweep the embarrassing incident under the carpet. By chance, Lars runs into a small radical group of neo-Nazis led by the charismatic Michael ‘Fatso’ (Nicolas Bro). Initially, Lars distances himself from their ideology and methods, but fuelled by defiance against the system in general – and his parents in particular – Lars decides to join the group. Fatso immediately spots the potential in the intelligent eloquent Lars, even though his right-hand man, Jimmy (David Dencik), does not agree. Lars rapidly advances through the ranks and is nominated as an A member, despite the fact that this promotion should really have gone to Jimmy’s younger brother, Patrick (Morten Holst). Lars moves out of his parents’ house and into board chairman Ebbe’s remotely situated summer cottage, which Jimmy is in the process of renovating. Despite their initial dislike of each other, the attraction between the two men soon becomes too strong to ignore, and even though they feel torn between ideology and emotions, they begin a secret relationship.
