TEACHING GUIDELINES AND CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

GENERAL GUIDELINES 1. Class size will vary - between 30-36 students 2. Approximately 3 hrs total to teach - class times are 1 hour each day 3. Use any extra time to work technique on combinations in your routine. 4. Length and tempo of music appropriate for level - do not repeat just to add length. BEGINNING/INT. 1: 1 ½ to 2 minutes is a good base; example - intro/verse/chorus/ending OTHER LEVELS: use your best judgment and check with BJ if questions

JAZZ A high energy style of that blends sharp and fluid movement to create visually technical routines. Jazz should encourage individuality and self-expression in conjunction with technique. Movement will focus on isolations, , body alignment, and developing rhythm and patterns. Inspiration for jazz routines can come from Broadway, Street, Contemporary, Lyrical, Thrash, and Sassy/Pop. Movement should encourage stylization from dancers as well as proper technique.

PLEASE USE THESE GUIDELINES WHEN CHOREOGRAPHING JAZZ ROUTINES Beginning - no formal training or very little - new to dance/dance team. · TEACH BASICS and INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: · chasse · pivot turn · chaine turn · single pirouettes · basic leaps / jumps (straight leg, , grand jete)

Intermediate - Level 1 (students should have mastered above items) · TEACH and INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: · split leap · double turns · simple combinations

Intermediate - Level 2 (students should have mastered above items) · TEACH and INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: · pique turn series · chaine turn series · leap and/or turn combinations

Advanced Level 1 (students should have mastered all of above) · TEACH, BREAKDOWN AND MAY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: ​ · switch leaps · axels · triples · fouettes · center leaps · combinations of above

Advanced Level 2 (students should have mastered all of the above) · may include any of the above skills/combinations without the need to breakdown and teach individual skills

LYRICAL A combination of , jazz, and contemporary style. is strongly inspired by the lyrics of the music. While a technical style, lyrical movement is centered more on emotion, expression and fluid movement. Dancers should be encouraged to find individually in the movement and focus less on precision.

CONTEMPORARY Draws from ballet, modern, and everything that doesn’t ‘fit’ into other styles. Using proper technique as a base point, allows dancers to take risks and explore movement with more freedom than other genres. Movement will include leg work, floor work, heavy use of torso, and rhythm changes. While emphasizing body alignment, strength, and flexibility, contemporary should also allow dancers to focus on musical phrasing, fluid movement, and self expression.

HIP HOP An urban style of dance, often characterized by hip hop music, that focuses on the musicality and rhythm of the music. Hip hop can include a variety of styles creating an energetic mixture of dynamic movement. It incorporates isolations, lines, grooves, levels, larger movement as well as a heavy dose of attitude and personal style. Hip hop can be hard hitting, smooth, intense, playful or a blend of all. Movement should be grounded and allow dancers to develop individuality in their performance.

FUNK Not a hip hop or jazz class, but a fusion of both. With the blend of genres, a funky style that is both fun and expressive is created. Jazz genre will contribute flexibility, syncopation, reveles, and technical elements. Hip hop will contribute some of the same along with isolations, harder hitting movement and a lower center of gravity. Funk movement should flow in and out of intensity, moving from hard hitting to soft and back to hard.

NOVELTY All ability level routines – divide team accordingly. Class sizes will be unpredictable. Fun, creative music - do not be afraid to use old songs with a new twist. Must include dancing, not just acting, but emphasis is on showmanship & enjoying performance. Props are always a fun addition (but no chairs) - These are briefly explained on the first day of camp. NOTE: These are not Hip Hop classes. May incorporate some hip hop/funk style into your dance if it fits your theme.
