Plant Terminology
PLANT TERMINOLOGY Plant terminology for the identification of plants is a necessary evil in order to be more exact, to cut down on lengthy descriptions, and of course to use the more professional texts. I have tried to keep the terminology in the database fairly simple but there is no choice in using many descriptive terms. The following slides deal with the most commonly used terms (more specialized terms are given in family descriptions where needed). Professional texts vary from fairly friendly to down-right difficult in their use of terminology. Do not be dismayed if a plant or plant part does not seem to fit any given term, or that some terms seem to be vague or have more than one definition – that’s life. In addition this subject has deep historical roots and plant terminology has evolved with the science although some authors have not. There are many texts that define and illustrate plant terminology – I use Plant Identification Terminology, An illustrated Glossary by Harris and Harris (see CREDITS) and others. Most plant books have at least some terms defined. To really begin to appreciate the diversity of plants, a good text on plant systematics or Classification is a necessity. PLANT TERMS - Typical Plant - Introduction [V. Max Brown] Plant Shoot System of Plant – stem, leaves and flowers. This is the photosynthetic part of the plant using CO2 (from the air) and light to produce food which is used by the plant and stored in the Root System. The shoot system is also the reproductive part of the plant forming flowers (highly modified leaves); however some plants also have forms of asexual reproduction The stem is composed of Nodes (points of origin for leaves and branches) and Internodes Root System of Plant – supports the plant, stores food and uptakes water and minerals used in the shoot System PLANT TERMS - Typical Perfect Flower [V. -

Kumala Dewi ii ABSTRACT Nerine fothergillii bulbs were stored at different temperatures for a certain period of time and then planted and grown in an open condition. The effect of the different storage temperatures on carbohydrate -; content and endogenous gibberellins w Ct,5 examined in relation to flowering. Flowering percentage and flower number in each umbel was reduced when the bulbs were stored at 300 C while bulbs which received 50 C treatment possess earlier flowering and longer flower stalksthan bulbs without 5 0 C storage treatment. Carbohydrates in both outer and inner scales of N. fothergillii were examined semi-quantitatively by paper chromatography. Glucose, fructose and sucrose have been identified from paper chromatogramS. Endogenous gibberellins in N. fothergillii have been identified by GC - SIM and full mass spectra from GCMS. These include GA19, GA20 and G Al, their presence suggests the occurence of the early 13 - hydroxylation pathway. The response of N. bowdenii grown under Long Day (LD) and Short Day (SD) conditions w as studied. Ten plants from each treatment were examined at intervalsof 4 weeks. -

Moraea insolens | Plantz Africa about:reader?url=http://pza.sanbi.org/moraea-insolens pza.sanbi.org Moraea insolens | Plantz Africa Introduction Moraea insolens is a critically endangered, cormous plant, with dazzling orange-red or rarely white- or cream-coloured, salver-shaped blooms, with prominent, deep brown markings to attract its beetle pollinators. It is very rare in cultivation, but can be successfully grown as a container subject. Description Description This deciduous, winter-growing geophyte grows 200–350 mm high and has a small, rounded corm, protected by a covering of hard, light brown outer tunics. The corm produces two, dark brown, basal sheaths and has a solitary, linear, bright green, channelled leaf. The tepals vary in shades of light to bright orange-red and are rarely white or cream-coloured. The three outer tepals are larger than the three inner ones and all are adorned with a deep brown, arrow-shaped marking near the base, sometimes outlined in white. The filaments are united into a central column with three long anthers symmetrically arranged opposite the three outer tepals. The anthers produce sticky, bright orange pollen. The fruit is an elliptic capsule containing many small, light brown, irregularly shaped seeds. The plant flowers from mid- to late spring (mid-September to mid-October) and is completely dormant in summer. -

SELL CUT FLOWERS FROM PERENNIAL SUMMER-FLOWERING BULBS Andy Hankins Extension Specialist-Alternative Agriculture, Virginia State University Reviewed by Chris Mullins, Virginia State University 2018 Commercial producers of field-grown flower cut flowers generally have a wide selection of crops to sell in April, May and June. Many species of annual and especially perennial cut flowers bloom during these three months. Many flower crops are sensitive to day length. Crops that bloom during long days such as larkspur, yarrow, peonies and gypsophila cannot be made to bloom after the summer equinox on June 21st. Other crops such as snapdragons may be day length neutral but they are adversely affected by the very warm days and nights of mid-summer. It is much more challenging for Virginia cut flower growers to have a diverse selection of flower crops for marketing from July to September when day length is getting shorter and day temperatures are getting hotter. Quite a few growers offer the same inventory of sunflowers, zinnias, celosia and gladiolas during the middle of the summer because everything else has come and gone. A group of plants that may offer new opportunities for sales of cut flowers during mid-summer are summer-flowering bulbs. Many of these summer-flowering bulbs are tropical plants that have only become available in the United States during the last few years. The first question that growers should ask about any tropical plant recommended for field planting is, " Will this species be winter hardy in Virginia?" Many of the bulb species described in this article are not very winter hardy. -

INTRODUCTION In this article, the literature for the past twelve or so years is recorded on the anatomy of Liliaceae, AmarylIidaceae and Iridaceae and the smaller, related families, Alliaceae, Haemodoraceae, Hypoxidaceae, Ruscaceae, Smilacaceae and Trilliaceae. Subjects covered range from embryology, vegetative and floral anatomy to seed anatomy. A format is used in which references are arranged alphabetically, numbered and annotated, so that the reader can rapidly obtain an idea of the range and contents of papers on subjects of particular interest to him. The main research trends have been identified, classified, and check lists compiled for the major headings. Current systematic anatomy on the 'Anatomy of the Monocotyledons' series is reported. Comment is made on areas of research which might prove to be of future significance. -
