Immediate Source of Acquisition Katherine (Kappa) Adair Waugh donated the materials to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in several installments between 2004 and 2020. Biographical / Historical Mary Virginia Hamilton was born in the Bronx on February 28, 1913 and grew up in Montclair, New Jersey. As a child she was surrounded by poetry. Her father, Robert Browning Hamilton, was a serious amateur poet who would read to her in her crib, from classics such as Pope's translation of Homer's Iliad. Her mother, Katharine Temple Hopson, focused on Mother Goose rhymes. Mary Virginia began writing her own poems when she was six. She graduated from the Kimberley School in 1929, and at the age of 16 she entered Mount Holyoke College. She disliked the name Mary and dropped it as soon as she left home. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 1933 at the age of 20, already having twice won the distinguished Glascock Prize for poetry. A year later, she earned a master's degree at Radcliffe, after which she taught for one year at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. As M.V. Hamilton or Virginia Hamilton and (after her marriage) as V.H. Adair or Virginia Hamilton Adair, while still in her 20s and 30s, she submitted poems to leading periodicals including the Saturday Review, The Atlantic, and The New Republic. She had many poems published before and after World War II. In 1936 she married Douglass Graybill Adair II, who was to become a respected American historian. The Adairs had three children: Robert "Robin" Hamilton, Douglass "D3" Graybill III, and Katharine "Kappa" Sidney. The family lived a number of years in east coast cities, during which time Douglass taught at The College of William and Mary and edited its distinguished William and Mary Quarterly. In 1955, they moved from Williamsburg to Claremont, California, where Douglass taught at the Claremont Graduate University. In 1957, Virginia began teaching poetry and children's literature classes at the then-California State Polytechnic College in Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona), continuing there until 1980. Throughout the years, she persisted in writing almost daily, mostly to please herself, without the dictates of publishers. Nevertheless, it is notable that she published more poetry before her celebrity and her three books than is usually recognized. Virginia Hamilton Adair's beloved husband Douglass committed suicide in 1968, without warning or discernible reason. The shock affected her deeply; she would allude to this loss in many of her subsequent writings. After losing all sight in 1992, she kept writing on an old Olympia typewriter (included in the collection). In 1994 she moved into a single room in the Pilgrim Place retirement community in Claremont, where several helpers assisted her in revising her poems. In the early 1990s, her friend and fellow Claremont poet, Robert Mezey, urged her to publish a book. With his help Ants on the Melon was published in 1996 under contract with Random House. At that time, she was 83 and totally blind. The book met with acclaim, and made Time magazine's Best Seller list in 1996. Random House published two more books of her collected poems: Beliefs and Blasphemies in 1998 and Living on Fire in 2000. The Finding Aid of the Virginia 0051 2 Hamilton Adair Papers 0051 Adair was the subject of a long article in the January 1, 1996 issue of The New Yorker, by its poetry editor Alice Quinn, who published eight of Adair's poems in subsequent issues. Elizabeth Farnsworth interviewed Adair for PBS' News Hour, and she was interviewed on the Today show in 1997. Garrison Keillor occasionally read her poems on his popular radio program, "The Writer's Almanac." Adair continued to be asked to do public readings in Claremont during the 1990s. With the aid of poet friends and helpers, she published three books of poems, as well as prose articles for such publications as The New York Times and others. She received honors and awards as well. The Glaucoma Foundation in December of 1996 honored her at its Annual Black and White Ball in New York. She was awarded an honorary doctorate from her alma mater, Mount Holyoke College, in 2003. She was the recipient of Kimberley Montclair Academy's Distinguished Alumni Award in October of 2003. She stopped writing in the year before her death on September 16, 2004. Scope and Contents The collection includes poems and drafts of poems; prose works; drawings and other original art by Virginia Hamilton Adair. Also included in the collection are personal papers; clippings; files on publications by Adair; audiovisual recordings of poetry readings; realia; and photographs. July 30, 2001 / April 26, 2002 Lowney Turner Handy, writing teacher of James Jones and others, maintained a writing school in southern Illinois. Her teaching approach included the use of various works from her library which students had to read and copy by hand or by using a typewriter in the process of becoming familiar with accomplished writing styles. Most of the books listed below are fiction and poetry, although an occasional title in a different realm is also included. Many of the books are annotated by Handy with comments, sometimes on the pastedown, sometimes in the body of the work.. A few items, notably his own works, were gifts from James Jones. Also included in the collection are published works of other successful students, e.g., Jere Peacock., Tom Chamales, and Edwin Daly. These books were about to be discarded when Elizabeth Bevington, an antiquarian bookseller and member of the Friends of the Cunningham Memorial Library, retrieved them and donated them to the library as the Lowney Turner Handy Library Collection to be housed within the Rare Books Collection. I examine four poet- painters associated with the Japanese literati tradition in the Edo (1603-1867) and Meiji (1867- 1912) periods: Yosa Buson (1716-83), Ema Saikō (1787-1861), Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) and Natsume Sōseki (1867-1916). Each artist fashions a lyric subjectivity constituted by the kinds of blending found in literati painting and poetry. I argue that each artist’s thoughts and feelings emerge in the tensions generated in the process of blending forms, genres, and the ideas (aesthetic, philosophical, social, cultural, and historical) that they carry with them.

    A Picture’s Worth a Thousand Words: Exploring Illustrations in Caldecott Award Books to Increase Vocabulary Acquisition Klair McGlynn Shawmont Elementary School Overview Rationale Objectives Strategies Classroom Activities Annotated Bibliography/Resources Appendix/Content Standards Overview "What is the use of a book," thought Alice "without pictures or conversation?" ~from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland The objective of the curriculum unit, A Picture’s Worth a Thousand Words: Exploring Illustrations in Caldecott Award books to Increase Vocabulary Acquisition, is to examine how the award winning illustrations capture the emotional appeal and responses of both young and old viewers and to provide a plethora of learning opportunities to build vocabulary in a kindergarten classroom. It will provide an introduction to Children‟s Literature through picture books and their illustrations with implications for educators to utilize illustrations to teach new words. After presenting a brief history and criteria for selection of this prestigious distinction, this unit will focus on the merits of using the Caldecott Award books to teach vocabulary development. Educators should recognize the elements of Caldecott books that appeal to children, which include their illustrations, characters, and genres. These books can be used to enhance student learning in a variety of ways. The books can be readily integrated with different subjects, related to important character principles, and used as a source of inspiration. Understanding the appeal and potential uses of Caldecott books can help teachers to value these books as vital resources for their classrooms. This unit is intended for kindergarten students in a self-contained classroom. Global workers against authoritarianism, fascism, and dictatorships The Editor Dario Azzellini is Professor of Development Studies at the Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas in Mexico, and visiting scholar at Cornell University in the USA. He has conducted research into social transformation processes for more than 25 years. His primary research interests are industrial sociol- ogy and the sociology of labour, local and workers’ self-management, and so- cial movements and protest, with a focus on South America and Europe. He has published more than 20 books, 11 films, and a multitude of academic ar- ticles, many of which have been translated into a variety of languages.
