The Art of David Lynch
The Art of David Lynch weil das Kino heute wieder anders funktioniert; für ei- nen wie ihn ist da kein Platz. Aber deswegen hat Lynch ja nicht seine Kunst aufgegeben, und nicht einmal das Filmen. Es ist nur so, dass das Mainstream-Kino den Kaperversuch durch die Kunst ziemlich fundamental abgeschlagen hat. Jetzt den Filmen von David Lynch noch einmal wieder zu begegnen, ist ein Glücksfall. Danach muss man sich zum Fernsehapparat oder ins Museum bemühen. (Und grimmig die Propaganda des Künstlers für den Unfug transzendentaler Meditation herunterschlucken; »nobody is perfect.«) Was also ist das Besondere an David Lynch? Seine Arbeit geschah und geschieht nach den »Spielregeln der Kunst«, die bekanntlich in ihrer eigenen Schöpfung und zugleich in ihrem eigenen Bruch bestehen. Man er- kennt einen David-Lynch-Film auf Anhieb, aber niemals David Lynch hat David Lynch einen »David-Lynch-Film« gedreht. Be- 21 stimmte Motive (sagen wir: Stehlampen, Hotelflure, die Farbe Rot, Hauchgesänge von Frauen, das industrielle Rauschen, visuelle Americana), bestimmte Figuren (die Frau im Mehrfachleben, der Kobold, Kyle MacLachlan als Stellvertreter in einer magischen Biographie - weni- ger, was ein Leben als vielmehr, was das Suchen und Was ist das Besondere an David Lynch? Abgesehen Erkennen anbelangt, Väter und Polizisten), bestimmte davon, dass er ein paar veritable Kultfilme geschaffen Plot-Fragmente (die nie auflösbare Intrige, die Suche hat, Filme, wie ERASERHEAD, BLUE VELVET oder die als Sturz in den Abgrund, die Verbindung von Gewalt TV-Serie TWIN PEAKS, die aus merkwürdigen Gründen und Design) kehren in wechselnden Kompositionen (denn im klassischen Sinn zu »verstehen« hat sie ja nie wieder, ganz zu schweigen von Techniken wie dem jemand gewagt) die genau richtigen Bilder zur genau nicht-linearen Erzählen, dem Eindringen in die ver- richtigen Zeit zu den genau richtigen Menschen brach- borgenen Innenwelten von Milieus und Menschen, der ten, und abgesehen davon, dass er in einer bestimmten Grenzüberschreitung von Traum und Realität. -

Dedicated to the work of emerging, innovative filmmakers, Good Machine has produced or co-produced films by, among others, Ang Lee, Todd Solondz, Nicole Holofcener, Ed Burns, Cheryl Dunye and Hal Hartley. Beginning with Tui Shou (Pushing Hands) (1992), the first collaboration between Good Machine and director Ang Lee, The Museum of Modern Art presents eight feature films and five shorts from February 13 through 23, 2001 at the Roy and Niuta Titus Theatre 1. "Good Machine proves that audiences do want to be entertained intelligently and engaged substantively," remarks Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator, Department of Film and Video, who organized the series. "Their achievements are reflected in this Tenth Anniversary series and are, in large part, due to Good Machine's collaborations with filmmakers and its respect for the creative process." In addition to producing and co-producing films, Good Machine has gone on to establish an international sales company involved in distributing diverse and unusual works such as Joan Chen's Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl (1998) and Lars Von Trier's Dancer in the Dark (2000). -

Vme AND BRB SEAL ALLIANCE AT MIPCOM • Various productions from the Spanish company will be aired on the American channel as a first step in a long-term accord Madrid, October 15, 2014. Vme Media and BRB Internacional have just sealed at MIPCOM an accord for U.S. Hispanic audiences in the United States. The television channel, the first that broadcasts exclusively in Spanish throughout America, will air various BRB productions, including international hits, Bernard (156 x 3’), Mica (26 x 15’), Zoobabu (104 x 2’) and Kambu (52 x 7’). This is the first step in a long-term agreement between the two entertainment-sector companies that will be progressively widened in the future. In this first phase of the accord, Vme and BRB Internacional have agreed on various animation series for broadcast in the U.S. Hispanic markets in the United States – and some feature-length films, too, such as My Friend Bernard – aimed at pre-school and family audiences. The agreement includes the disemination of these productions both on Vme’s television network that reaches 70M U.S. housholds and via its video-on- demand services. "Television dominates the entertainment conversation and is enjoying the most spectacular run in its history with breakthrough creativity, emerging platforms and dynamic new opportunities for our industry's storytellers," said Rosenblum. “From favorites like Game of Thrones, Veep, and House of Cards to nominations newcomers like black-ish, Master of None, The Americans and Mr. Robot, television has never been more impactful in its storytelling, sheer breadth of series and quality of performances by an incredibly diverse array of talented performers. “The Television Academy is thrilled to once again honor the very best that television has to offer.” This year’s Drama and Comedy Series nominees include first-timers as well as returning programs to the Emmy competition: black-ish and Master of None are new in the Outstanding Comedy Series category, and Mr. Robot and The Americans in the Outstanding Drama Series competition. Additionally, both Veep and Game of Thrones return to vie for their second Emmy in Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Drama Series respectively. Since 2011, the Writing Program conducted travel-based exchanges in partnership with the Deutsches Literaturinstitut Leipzig in Leipzig, Germany; the Scuola Holden in Turin, Italy; the Institut Ramon Llull and Universitat Pompeu Fabra–IDEC in Barcelona, Catalonia (Spain); the Columbia Global Center | Middle East in Amman, Jordan; Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.; and the University of the Arts Helsinki in Helsinki, Finland. Starting in 2016, the Word for Word program expanded to include a collaborative translation workshop running parallel to the exchanges, in which Writing Program students, over the course of one semester, translate work by their partners at some of these same institutions – the Deutsches Literaturinstitut Leipzig and Scuola Holden–as well as some new ones: Université Paris 8 in Paris, France; New York University’s Creative Writing in Spanish MFA Program; and the Instituto Vera Cruz in São Paulo, Brazil. -
