NEWSLETTER at November 2020

Editorial Editorial Events for November

Litterpick Autumn seems to have been particularly gloomy so far with heavy cloud adding to the general malaise. Almost as an insult the day Zone 6 & 7 - October 24th ends with a spectacular sunset, then clouds Hay St, Brook End, Bogs Gap over so we miss all the meteor showers up in the night sky. Zones 2 to 6 - November 14th

Most disappointed to find that we cannot Whole Village Sweep enter the mobile library, having waited so long for it to appear again; having to stand Zone 1 - November 21st outside and suggest books we might like to (p 5) read without having any idea what is available on the shelves, is rather credulous. We are rd promised that things will change, let’s hope Mobile Library – Tuesday 3 so. November

With half term around the corner there are Toy Service – SM Parish a few suggestions on page 10, for outings th Church, 9.45am, November 15 where the children can run free and possibly (p 10) catch a glimpse of some wildlife.

A couple of events have been planned at SM Cake Stall – SM Church, Porch, Church, the very popular Toy Service and a December 5th, 10 – 11am (p 6)

MP urges eligible residents in South Cambridgeshire to get flu vaccine

this winter

• Largest ever flu vaccination campaign launched in • Everyone over the age of 50 to be offered a flu vaccine • Anthony Browne MP urges eligible constituents to take up the vaccine

Local MP Anthony Browne has urged all those in South Cambridgeshire who are eligible for the flu jab to get one this winter, as the Government launches its drive to vaccine 30 million people. The drive to vaccines comes as new research from Public Health England suggests that people who tested positive for both flu and Covid-19 were more than twice as likely to die, compared to those with Covid-19 alone. The research also found that those with co-infection of the two viruses were more at risk of severe illness. This year, the flu vaccination programme is being expanded to help protect people from flu and ease pressure on the NHS and urgent care services. The health system is working to provide the free flu vaccine to 30 million people, the highest number on record, including: • All primary school children, and, for the first time, Year 7 children. • Two- and three-olds. • The most vulnerable people, including adults aged 65 and over, those with long-term health conditions and pregnancy women. • Household contact of people on the NHS Shielded Patient List and all health and social care workers who have direct contact with the people they care for. Once uptake has been maximised in the most at-risk groups, the newly eligible 50-64-year olds will be invited for vaccination later in the season. Commenting, Anthony Browne MP said: “As we approach the winter, it is imperative that everyone who needs a flu vaccination takes up the offer to have one. “I urge everyone in South Cambridgeshire who is eligible to get vaccinated, which could make an important difference if they should also catch coronavirus in the months ahead. “Controlling the spread of coronavirus and protecting the NHS is on all of us – we must all wash out hands, cover our faces and make space – as well as taking sensible steps like getting a flu jab.”

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “This year more than ever, it’s vital that those eligible for the flu jab get it this winter so you can protect yourself, your family and the NHS. We’re pulling out all the stops to prepare for this uniquely challenging winter and we have enough vaccines for 30 million people this year, more than we’ve ever done before. “With the simultaneous risk of flu and COVID-19, make sure you get your flu jab if you’re eligible, don’t gather in groups larger than 6 and remember ‘Hands Face Space’ so we can look after each other.”

Hi all,

Well September has arrived as promised I plan to resume our litterpicking activities. I have been doing some limited picks while out and about over the past 6 months as have others on this group and I can sadly report the problem has not gone away. I do not plan to change the format except to say PLEASE bring your own gloves as I do not think using communal gloves would be considered very COVID safe. Obviously we will need to respect social distancing rules at the meet and while out picking. I will bring a bottle of sanitiser for anyone to use afterwards but as always a thorough hand wash when you get home will be needed.

Home-Start’s Hug in a Mug Campaign

What is the thing you miss most at the moment?

Before lockdown, there were all sorts of things we took for granted: popping into a shop on a whim;

sitting in a café and enjoying a cup of coffee; seeing a friend and giving them a hug.

It’s a touchy subject

Touch is the first of the five senses to develop: embryos start to be aware of touch at around the 8th

week of pregnancy and it’s the key sense in survival - young animals and humans instinctively pull

away from discomfort and move towards things that feel good. Touch also affects the mental and

physical development in children: research shows that a lack of physical contact from birth will have a

severely detrimental effect on a child’s development which carries on into adulthood.

Touch is also a powerful communication tool: it’s the easiest way to say to someone that we care

about them. As author Mimi Novic says, “Laughter with those that understand us is music for the

soul. A hug at the right moment and a kind shoulder to lean on, is the sprinkle of magic that keeps us

walking towards hope.” Receiving and giving hugs helps to relieve stress, reduces blood pressure and

releases the happiness hormones oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin: in short, hugs are good for you.

In fact, hugs are one of the key tools our volunteers use when helping a family facing crisis.

We also use tea.

“While there is tea, there is hope.” In Britain, offering a cup of tea during times of stress or distress is second nature. Of course, with the current COVID-19 lockdown, sharing hugs and cups of tea (or coffee) are an increasingly rare commodity. Which is why Home-Start have created our “hug in a mug” campaign. You might not be able to hug friends during these stressful times, but you can donate the cost of a cuppa to help us provide virtual hugs to families in crisis. And, while we’re also missing real hugs right now, we are providing the next best thing: a cup of tea, and hope. If you’d like to support our Hug in a Mug campaign you can text HOMESTARTHUG to 70085 to donate £3 (or HOMESTARTHUGNOINFO if you’d rather not be on our mailing list). And you can take a look at our Hug in a Mug campaign video, which is live on our website: www.hsrsc.org.uk

Joyce Thompson Ross

My name is Jackie Abrey (Nee Ellis) I live in Bassingbourn now, and I wondered if you could mention that my Uncle Robert recently lost his wife Joyce..

There must be people who remember Robert and Joyce Ross. Well Joyce sadly passed away peacefully in her sleep on the 15th September aged 81yrs.

Joyce was born and raised in Steeple Morden to Ettie and Fred Thompson, with a sister Margaret (our mum) and two brothers David and Alan. They lived down the bottom of Bogs Gap Lane until she met Robert and married, they lived in the village in The Orchard, (now Golden Orchard), in Hay Street, until they moved to Wyboston where my Uncle still lives.

FAMILY TOY SERVICE – ST PETER & ST PAUL, STEEPLE MORDEN

Sunday 15th November at 9.45am

After the wonderful response to our Toy Service last year we will be having another on Sunday, 15th November at 9.45am – masked and socially distanced of course.

We would be so pleased to receive any surplus toys that you have – clean and in good condition – which will be taken to the Cambridge refuges through Mothers’ Union. Sadly the refuges are very busy; children and their mothers have to leave home with hardly any possessions, so toys will brighten their days.

There is also a need for pushchairs, cots, highchairs etc. as well as all clothing for under-ones.

If you are able to help, but cannot get to the Toy Service, please leave contributions at the back of the church on Saturday the 14th. For further information please ring Anne on 853490 or Gilly on 852380. Thank you. Please bring donations in bags.

Step outside and make the most of our open spaces

What to do at half-term - here are a few some local places you can visit for ‘free’ where children can run around and enjoy the local scenery and nature.

Coton Country Reserve – is 300 acres of attractive countryside on the west of Cambridge, managed for people, nature and farming.

Milton Country Park – The country park was created from old gravel pits, and offers a varied natural habitat with woodland, lakes, and attractive pathways suitable for bicycles and wheelchairs.

RSPB Fowlmere Nature Reserve- A wildlife oasis set within farmland, the reserve’s former water-cress beds are now reed-beds, fen, chalk grassland and scrub. The area also holds a small example of a chalk stream, one of the UK’s rarest habitats.

RSPB Fen Drayton Lakes – Initially a flooded sand and gravel quarry next to riverside meadows, the lakes have a huge variety of wildlife including otters, dragonflies, ducks, swans and geese.

Wandlebury Country Park – On the Gog Magog Hills, the Wandelbury Estate offers miles of woodland and wildflower meadows, where you can have a picnic or hire a BBQ area, watch wildlife, or stretch your legs with a stroll or strenuous hike.

On the doorstep – are Wimpole Estate – a working estate with gardens and Home Farm, and Royston Heath – several acres of woodland and heathland. 10
