Steeple Morden Parish Council Police plea for employers to help boost the List of Councillors as at front line May 2018 POLICE are urging employers across the county to sign up to a scheme that supports their staff to volunteer as police constables. CLLR J CLAYTON (Chair)

5 Brook End, Steeple Morden 01763 852203 Employer Supported Policing (ESP) asks employers to promote the role of the Special constable in their organisation, while granting those who CLLR S WHEATLEY (Vice Chair) do sign up additional leave days to help them meet duty commitments. 95 Hay Street, Steeple Morden In return, the organisation will benefit from staff who have received a 01763 853826 unique training package, worth several thousand pounds and covering CLLR G BELSON (Vice Chair) a wide range of skills, many of which are transferable to the workplace. Ringdale, 2 North Brook Road, Specials are unpaid volunteers with full police powers who agree to Steeple Morden 01763 852475 dedicate a minimum of 16 hours a month to training or operational duties. They often find this time outside of working hours but family CLLR A DREW commitments and other outside interests can lead to volunteers 76 Station Road, Steeple Morden reluctantly deciding to leave the service after a few years. 01763 853390

CLLR J COURTNEY The call for more organisations to join ESP comes as hundreds of events 106 Station Rd, take place for National Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June). The annual week

CLLR C UPCHURCH was established in 1984 and recognises the contribution volunteers Greenway Farm, Litlington Road, SM make to communities every day. 01763 852193 Head of the Special Constabulary Vic Kerlin said ESP benefitted for both employer and Special, who enjoyed and gained great benefits from their CLLR K AUSTIN policing work. Bogs Gap Lane, Steeple Morden He said: “ESP is a powerful staff development opportunity that more 01763 852023 than 250 organisations throughout the UK have already recognised, CLLR S TRAVERSE-HEALY including well-known private, public and third sector employers in the 46 Station Rd, Steeple Morden eastern region. 01763 853843

DISTRICT CLLR MRS H. WILLIAMS “Many police forces across the region currently have high levels of 07885 774775 recruitment of regular officers but this makes Specials recruitment more difficult as many people who might consider the Specials are drawn COUNTY CLLR MR S. KINDERSLEY directly into regular roles. 01767 651982 “ESP is especially important at this time as many of the people who join the Specials under ESP already have careers outside policing and see the Specials as a place that they can gain skills, support their community and do something really important alongside their day job.”

Steeple Morden Parish Council One organisation signed up to ESP in is the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute near Hinxton, , which is at the cutting-

edge of genome and bioinformatics research. Interested in helping the community

decisions that have an impact and help people on the spot. All enquiries should be made to: "If you do your job well, the regulars are very welcoming and you feel

like you're making a difference supporting them. Sally Walmesley "The voluntary sector in the UK is key to community cohesion - coaching [email protected] at sports clubs or getting involved in parish councils - these are important

NEWS FROM YOUR PARISH COUNCIL The Full PC meets on the second Monday in the in the Cricket Pavilion (Village Hall in winter) at 7.30pm. The meeting is listed every month in the Village Post Office window, on the Notice Board at the Recreation Ground, and in Odsey near the station. A copy of the full minutes from the Council Meetings may be obtained by contacting the Parish Clerk, Sally Walmesley, Redwood Lodge, South Street, Litlington, Royston SG8 0QR. Telephone 01763 852137 or e-mail [email protected]. Minutes can also be viewed on the Steeple Morden Village Website www.steeplemorden.org and the Village Post Office. Brief notes on agenda items from the Parish Council Meeting on Monday June 10th are included below:

 County Councillor Mr S Kindersley – reported that the A428 upgrade and rerouting plans have been released for consultation. There is still no sign that Herts CC will fund any improvements to the junctions on the A505. South Camb. C. are to clamp down on any empty properties which have been empty for 5 years, by claiming full council tax. The East/West rail project has been declared by a QC as a flawed consultation procedure.  A505 – It was decided following Cllr Kindersley’s comments to send a letter to Herts CC & the MP Oliver Heald listing the villages’ concerns over the lack of action by Herts CC.  Station Car Park Update – a meeting was held with the residents of Odsey and Mr J Fordham. Mr Fordham has offered some land adjacent to Cheyney Lodge to be used as a car park. Mr Fordham was thought to be in talks with car park planners. A letter is to be sent to Mr Fordham and Omnia to ascertain the state of play.  Traffic – Another MVAS has been ordered. The one recently on Ashwell Road has now been moved to Litlington Road. Many people have commented on the ‘smiley face’ and how they appreciate knowing what speed they are actually doing. An offer of cones to the Primary School has been taken up by the caretaker – these will have No Waiting signs attached. A request for police support concerning parking around the school has been made.  Recreation Ground and Conservation Area- The abandoned car has had a 21 day notice served otherwise it will be removed by the Council. Grass matting has been put in front of the ‘practice goal’ near the play area. The RosSPA Report on the play area pointed out various amendments and repairs – many of which were already in the process of being completed. They did point out that the confers needed to be cut back on the far side as they were interfering with the zip-wire and the swings. Two new dog signs have been requested. The dog handlers are to be asked NOT to use the Conservation Area for their training as the flora and grasses have been damaged.  Footpaths- the footpath on Craft Way has been referred to the South Cambs C for further trimming.  Any other business – due to the resignation of a Committee Member the Parish Council will be issuing a notice to co-op another committee member. o Dog Bin – a dog bin was requested for Bogs Gap Lane. o Security Cameras – the Village Hall cameras are in need of servicing. o Smarties – a letter is to be sent to Smarties concerning the clothing bin sited in the car park of the recreation ground. o Next Blue Grass Concert – will be held on July 19th and 20th. 2020. 3

Further Notes from the Annual Parish Meeting held on Thursday 9th May

Report from Country Cllr Sebastian Kindersley  Cllr reported it had been a difficult year in the face of austerity with further cuts to the budget.  Money has been found to mend the worst of the pot-holes, although still nothing has been done to manage the overall deterioration of the roads.  Unfortunately the A505 has not been improved, the Herts CC have withdrawn all funding to improve the junctions.  There is still no definitive route for the east/west rail link although the Northern route seems to be favoured. A decision may be made in June/July.  The scrapyard planning issues have been implemented.

Report from District Cllr Heather Williams  District Council is run by the Liberal Democrats.  Apologies have been made over various IT outages during the year.  Local plan has been adopted. Planning has been made for more affordable houses.  The Community Chest grant is available for community projects.  An extra Green Bin with now cost £35.00 per annum.

Steeple Morden Primary School  Short on numbers. They have vacancies for 15 more pupils. Due to lack of pupils is having an effect on the funding.  Money has been put aside for maintenance work.  Before and after school parking is still a problem.

Bassingbourn Village College  Now has 638 students.  There was a 35% pass rate of all GCSEs. 35% of our students achieved at least 3 or more 7+ (A/A* equivalent) grades.  The College has received a grant of £250,000 to enhance security and update the college heating system.  The College took part in debates, and quizzes, a Shakespeare evening and a visit to Sadlers Wells. 4

What is Cambridge Open Studios?

During 4 weekends in July Cambridge Open Studios will take place. In Steeple Morden Anna Pye will be taking part. She’ll look forward to meeting you, don’t be shy, come and have a look at what I do!

This is a country wide event when artists welcome you to their studios or to an exhibition to show you what they are creating. It’s a great opportunity to see a wide range of creative arts and find out more about a variety of mediums and techniques.

Most people like to plan an art trail to visit several studios in an area or you can just visit your local studios. You will be warmly welcomed, probably offered refreshments and its fine to just browse. Many visitors take the opportunity to buy directly from the artist and there are often items that would make an ideal gift.

Guides are available from the Post Office and 3 Station Road, Steeple Morden
