Restoration schemesare normally evaluatedin terms of whether target species establish. While this is convenient information, it does not reveal how species interact in restoredsystems or how sustainablerestored systems are. 2. This study first investigatedold and restoredhay meadowsand then old and restored lowland heathlands.Sites were comparedand contrastedwith respectto plant-pollinator interactions. Both structural and functional aspectsof the biodiversity were quantified. The latter was done through the application of quantitative food web statistics. 3. Fieldwork involved sampling flower-visiting insects,while laboratory work involved analysis of the pollen carried on insect surfaces.There was considerable variation in community structureamong study sites of both habitats.Despite this variation, the meadowswere functionally similar. For the heathlands,both flower visitation patterns and quantitative pollen transportpatterns differed among study sites. This is concludedpartly to be an artefact of the age of the restoredheathlands that will disappearas they mature. 4. Heathland interaction webs were analysedfor the presenceof compartments. Although such compartmentswere concludedto be atypical for heathlands,the method for compartmentalizationanalysis may not have been suitable for detecting very small web compartments. 5. A study consideredthe impact of honeybeeson bumblebeesand found a negative associationbetween these bees. However, no mechanismwas confirmed to account for this. 6. Thrips pollination was investigatedon the heathlands.Thrips were restoredon all heathlandsand found to affect a significant fraction of the seedset in three hcathland plant spccies. 7. Restoration of plant-pollinator interactions was successful.Although structurally different communities had establishedon restoredsites, study sites belongedto the samebroad habitat categoriesand appearedto function in broadly the sameways. 2 FOR MY FAmiLy Jim said beeswouldn't sting idiots; but I didn't believethat, because I had tried themlots of timesmyself, and they wouldn't sting me. Many are highly beneficial. Almost all U.S. crops and domesticated animals, many sport fish and aquiculture species, numerous horticultural plants, and most biologicalN control organisms have origins outside the country. A large number of NIS, however, cause significant economic, environmental, and health damage. These harmful species are the focus of this study. The total number of harmful NIS and their cumulative impacts are creating a growing burden for the country. We cannot completely stop the tide of new harmful introductions. Perfect screening, detection, and control are technically impossible and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, the Federal and State policies designed to protect us from the worst species are not safeguarding our national interests in important areas. These conclusions have a number of policy implications. First, the Nation has no real national policy on harmful introductions; the current system is piecemeal, lacking adequate rigor and comprehensiveness. Second, many Federal and State statutes, regulations, and programs are not keeping pace with new and spreading non-indigenous pests.

Abstract: Studies on Pipunculid flies in their natural environment are presented. Certain places are described, which proved to be astonishingly rieh in species. Some remarkable associating insect species are listed. As far as investigated comments on the behaviour of the adult flies are added. Key words: Diptera, Pipunculidae, behaviour, ecology Introduction Pipunculid flies are rather small mostly black insects, developing as parasitoids inside leafhoppers, with the ability of hovering (relationship to Syrphidae) and with enormous compound eyes, useful for males in search for females, and for females in search for a potential victim, a cicad larva. Most specimen of Pipunculidae studied so far were collected by Malaise traps. This material allows to describe the existing species, to secure their systematical stand, and to mark their distribution. Many questions in this chapter are still open. On the other hand the development as parasitoids in leafhoppers show fascinating aspects of adaptations to this life and even has an ecological/economical content regarding pest control.

    Insects (other than moths) attracted to light Prepared by Martin Harvey for BENHS workshop on 9 December 2017 Although light-traps go hand-in-hand with catching and recording moths, a surprisingly wide range of other insects can be attracted to light and appear in light-traps on a regular or occasional basis. The lists below show insects recorded from light-traps of various kinds, mostly from southern central England but with some additions from elsewhere in Britain, and based on my records from the early 1990s to date. Nearly all are my own records, plus a few of species that I have identified for other moth recorders. The dataset includes 2,446 records of 615 species. (See the final page of this document for a comparison with another list from Andy Musgrove.) This isn’t a rigorous survey: it represents those species that I have identified and recorded in a fairly ad hoc way over the years. I record insects in light-traps fairly regularly, but there are of course biases based on my taxonomic interests and abilities. Some groups that come to light regularly are not well-represented on this list, e.g. chironomid midges are missing despite their frequent abundance in light traps, Dung beetle Aphodius rufipes there are few parasitic wasps, and some other groups such as muscid © Udo Schmidt flies and water bugs are also under-represented. It’s possible there are errors in this list, e.g. where light-trapping has been erroneously recorded as a method for species found by day. I’ve removed the errors that I’ve found, but I might not yet have found all of them.

Gaja 6, HR-31000 Osijek, Croatia e-mail: [email protected], [email protected] Accepted: October 28th 2010 Systematic research into the distribution of t horse flies (Tabanidae) in Croatia was carried out in the period from 1992 to 2008. Horse flies were collected using different entomological methods, and in addition to field research, all relevant literature data were reviewed. In total, 5872 specimens, representing 12 species of four genera: Philipomyia, Dasyrhamphis, Atylotus and Therioplectes were collected from 271 localities covering 181 UTM grids. The zoogeographical analysis indicates that the Mediterranean species Dasyrhamphis anthracinus, Dasyrhamphis ater, Dasyrhamphis umbrinus and Therioplectes tunicatus were distributed in Croatia only in localities along the Adriatic Sea coast, while Therioplectes gigas and Philipomyia graeca, although also Mediterranean species, were found in the Alpine, Pannonian and continental regions of Croatia. Philipomyia aprica was collected in the Alpine region, as well as on the mountains of the Mediterranean region. The boreo-montane Eurasian species Atylotus fulvus and Atylotus rusticus, as well as the South European Atylotus loewianus, were sampled in the Mediterranean, continental, Pannonian and Alpine regions of Croatia, while the Afro-Eurasian arid species Atylotus flavoguttatuswas found in the Mediterranean, Pannonian and continental regions of Croatia.

Norwegian Journal of Entomology 61, 219–264. The Norwegian species are reviewed, and keys are supplied for all species. The following species are reported as new to Norway: Chrysops viduatus (Fabricius, 1794), Atylotus latistriatus Brauer, 1880, Hybomitra aterrima (Meigen, 1820), Hybomitra solstitialis (Meigen 1820), Haematopota italica Meigen, 1804, Haematopota subcylindica Pandellé, 1883 and Tabanus miki Brauer, 1880. The finding of Hybomitra aterrima solves the question of whether this taxon is a southern form of Hybomitra auripila Meigen, 1820 or a good species, and the long standing controversies over this question. However, the identity of Atylotus latistriatus seems to offer an unresolved problem. Maps of distribution, and a check list to the Norwegian species are supplied, and new Norwegian names are proposed for each species.
