Gaja 6, HR-31000 Osijek, Croatia e-mail: [email protected], [email protected] Accepted: October 28th 2010 Systematic research into the distribution of t horse flies (Tabanidae) in Croatia was carried out in the period from 1992 to 2008. Horse flies were collected using different entomological methods, and in addition to field research, all relevant literature data were reviewed. In total, 5872 specimens, representing 12 species of four genera: Philipomyia, Dasyrhamphis, Atylotus and Therioplectes were collected from 271 localities covering 181 UTM grids. The zoogeographical analysis indicates that the Mediterranean species Dasyrhamphis anthracinus, Dasyrhamphis ater, Dasyrhamphis umbrinus and Therioplectes tunicatus were distributed in Croatia only in localities along the Adriatic Sea coast, while Therioplectes gigas and Philipomyia graeca, although also Mediterranean species, were found in the Alpine, Pannonian and continental regions of Croatia. Philipomyia aprica was collected in the Alpine region, as well as on the mountains of the Mediterranean region. The boreo-montane Eurasian species Atylotus fulvus and Atylotus rusticus, as well as the South European Atylotus loewianus, were sampled in the Mediterranean, continental, Pannonian and Alpine regions of Croatia, while the Afro-Eurasian arid species Atylotus flavoguttatuswas found in the Mediterranean, Pannonian and continental regions of Croatia. -

Norwegian Journal of Entomology 61, 219–264. The Norwegian species are reviewed, and keys are supplied for all species. The following species are reported as new to Norway: Chrysops viduatus (Fabricius, 1794), Atylotus latistriatus Brauer, 1880, Hybomitra aterrima (Meigen, 1820), Hybomitra solstitialis (Meigen 1820), Haematopota italica Meigen, 1804, Haematopota subcylindica Pandellé, 1883 and Tabanus miki Brauer, 1880. The finding of Hybomitra aterrima solves the question of whether this taxon is a southern form of Hybomitra auripila Meigen, 1820 or a good species, and the long standing controversies over this question. However, the identity of Atylotus latistriatus seems to offer an unresolved problem. Maps of distribution, and a check list to the Norwegian species are supplied, and new Norwegian names are proposed for each species. Maritime Cliffs and Slopes Habitat Action Plan (Revised) Isle of Wight Biodiversity Action Plan Maritime Cliffs and Slopes Habitat Action Plan Second Review December 2007 1 Introduction Maritime cliffs and slopes have been identified as a priority habitat in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. They comprise sloping to vertical surfaces on the coastline where a break of slope is formed by slippage and/or coastal erosion. There appears to be no generally accepted definition of the minimum height or angle of slope which constitutes a cliff, but the zone defined as cliff top should extend landward to at least the limit of maritime influence (i.e. limit of salt spray deposition). On the seaward side, the plan extends to the limit of the supralittoral zone and so includes the splash zone lichens and other species of this habitat. They can broadly be classified as hard cliffs or soft cliffs, though there are intermediate types. Hard cliffs are vertical or steeply sloping, with crevices or ledges where plants can establish themselves and birds can find nest sites. They are formed of rocks which are relatively resistant to weathering, such as chalk. Soft cliffs are formed in less resistant rocks such as shales or in unconsolidated materials such as boulder clay. They are characterised by less steep slopes that gradually become vegetated. They are subject to frequent slumping and landslips, particularly where water percolates into the rock and reduces its effective shear strength. Most cliffs form at the junction of land and sea, where groundwater-driven land slippage and/or erosion by the sea have created a break in slope, but on the Isle of Wight there is also an extensive landslip zone between St Catherine’s Point and Bonchurch which has an inner cliff 500m inland rising to 140m above sea level. -
