We brought many world class groups to the saleroom, including The Harris Collection (February, single-owner, $7.5M, pre- sale estimate of $4.0-$6.0M), The Wine Trust (March), The Fox Cellar (May and June), The Thomas E. Bentley Cellar (June), and The Nelson-Lo Collection (June). Our focused auction in May, the third annual “Celebration of Burgundy,” yielded market-leading results and realized $4.1M (pre-sale estimates $2.6-$3.9M). Our focus has remained constant over these last ten years – to offer carefully inspected collections with great provenance and to provide clients with the best possible service – and when we fi nish this remarkable September auction, HDH will have offered nearly 9000 lots and approached $30 million in auction sales so far this year. I am honored that so many of you have trusted HDH for your Paul Hart collecting and consigning needs. CEO Hart Davis Hart Wine Co. We will open the fall season with an auction that I know you will agree is extraordinary. On my desk is a stack of receipts that is nearly a foot high. The documents provide detailed provenance for nearly every bottle of one of the most impressive, high-quality collections that HDH has offered. The cellar, A Superlative Range of Finest and Rarest Burgundy (lots 999-1313), much of which was purchased upon release in Europe, comes from a devoted consignor and friend who we have been working with for over 20 years. You will see that the owner found the gems from the top producers in Burgundy; his collection includes over 25 lots of DRC, including eight assortments, as well as more than 45 lots of Leroy and more than 20 from Rousseau. This is a collection not to be missed. If we have piqued your interest as a Burgundy collector, I promise we will keep your attention. The owner of A Magnifi cent Collection of Finest European & Californian Wines (lots 1314-1716) is a longtime friend who understands the market and has a great palate for the top wines. This represents only a portion of his carefully sourced collection, which has been stored under excellent conditions in a home cellar and a professional facility, both of which have been regularly visited by HDH staff. The offering starts with perfect half-cases of Bordeaux and Sauternes, but also features classic Rhônes and the very top of the Burgundy world, as well as libraries of Napa legends including Araujo, Bryant, Colgin, Schrader and SQN. The serious Burgundy collector should also peruse the collection of Finest Burgundy (lots 1751-1836) which includes pristine cases from Dujac and Lefl aive. I would be remiss if I did not also bring your attention to the excellent groups in our Friday session. The sale opens with an assortment of Sauternes and red and white Burgundy (lots 1-172) from the cellar of a long-time collector and consumer who has spent considerable time in Burgundy over the years. He has consigned with HDH numerous times and his wines are always in exemplary condition. In addition to Friday’s other excellent groups, I have also to point out the wines to be found in An Exciting Selection of Young Bordeaux (lots 341-408). You will fi nd multiple full-case offerings of Bordeaux of the past several vintages from the cellar of a West Coast collector. This consignor, too, has consigned numerous times with HDH. On behalf of the entire team here at HDH, we look forward to seeing you in Chicago on September 19th and 20th for what promises to be a noteworthy auction. Sincerely, Paul Hart CEO Market Analysis: HDH Auction Index (2006-Present) The HDH Auction Index tracks the performance of 15 key wines sold at HDH auctions. • Eberbach Abbey
Eberbach Abbey From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Eberbach Abbey (German: Kloster Eberbach) is a former Cistercian monastery near Eltville am Rhein in the Rheingau, Germany. On account of its impressive Romanesque and early Gothic buildings it is considered one of the most significant architectural heritage sites in Hesse, Germany. In the winter of 1985/86 the interior scenes of the film "The Name of the Rose" were filmed here. Eberbach Abbey, 2006 History It was founded in 1136 by Bernard of Clairvaux as the first Cistercian monastery on the east bank of the Rhine, on the site of a previous monastic foundation of Adalbert I of Saarbrücken, occupied at first by Augustinian canons and then by Benedictine monks, which had however failed to establish itself. It soon became one of the largest and most active monasteries of Germany from which a number of other foundations were made: Schönau Abbey near Heidelberg in 1142; Abbey church Otterberg Abbey in the Palatinate in 1144; Gottesthal Abbey near Liege in 1155; and Arnsburg Abbey in the Wetterau in 1174. At its height in the 12th and 13th centuries, the population is estimated to have been about 100 monks and over 200 lay brothers. Ebersbach Abbey was also very successful economically, principally as a result of profits from the cultivation of vineyards and the production of wine. At least 14 members of the family of the Counts of Katzenelnbogen were Dormitory buried in the church. Among them was Count Johann IV of Katzenelnbogen, who was the first to plant Riesling vines, in a new vineyard in the nearby village of Rüsselsheim, when the monks of Eberbach were still growing red grapes such as Grobrot, the earliest grape variety recorded in Eberbach.
