New Zealand Entomologist 23: 55-59 RESUMEN La avispa social Vespulagermanica es una especie invasora exitosa. En la mayoría de los países que ha invadido, se la considera perjudicial por causar daños económicos y ecológicos, además de ser una especie molesta y poseer una picadura dolorosa. Con el objeto de describir la situación de la especie en nuestro país y ahondar en las causas para su éxito de invasion, en primero lugar realizamos estudios de dieta y de su distribución, utilizando para esto último, un modelo ecoclimático. Los resultados indican que la avispa chaqueta amarilla se encuentra establecida en la Patagonia, donde es considerada plaga, a pesar de que desde el punto de vista ecoclimático ésta no seria un área muy favorable para la especie. Dadas las características de la especie y de los ambientes invadidos, es probable que su comportamiento de forrajeo constituya un factor relevante en su éxito colonizador. Para V.germam'ca se demostró la existencia de incremento local, un tipo de facilitación social por medio del cual, durante el forrajeo, las avispas son atraídas por con­ específicas a explotar una fuente de alimento. Estudios realizados previamente en la especie han propuesto a las claves visuales como principales responsables del proceso. Sin embargo, a través de varios experimentos nosotros demostramos que las claves olfativas serían las que prevalecen. Las avispas forrajeadoras son atraídas por el olor que emana de sus con-especificas. Los machacados de cabezas de estas avispas atraen con­ específicas desencadenando el aterrizaje y la remoción de fragmentos de cabezas. Los extractos de cabeza, aplicados sobre un papel de filtro desencadenan la atracción y aterrizaje de avispas, y la respuesta comportamental difiere de acuerdo a si el experimento es realizado cerca del nido o en condiciones de forrajeo. Postulamos que existe una feromona vinculada al forrajeo que se encuentra en las cabezas de las obreras de V. germanica. A nivel individual analizamos qué claves (visuales o de micro localización) prevalecen al re-localizar una fuente de alimento. Encontramos diferencias según el on'gen proteico o carbohidratado de la fuente explotada. SUMMARY Vespula germani'ca is a social wasp that has successfully colonized many parts of the world. It affects economic activities and natural communities in invaded countries, and is responsible of painful sting. In order to describe the species situation in our country, we did studies on its diet and on its distribution using an ecoclimatic model. Our results show that yellowjackets are well established in Patagonia, where it is considered a pest, although according to ecoclimatic model this would not be a suitable place for the species establishment. Foraging behaviour probably constitutes a relevant characteristic for wasp invasion success. Local enhancement is a variant of social facilitation in which foragers are attracted by conspecifics exploiting a feeding source. Through a series of experiments we show that odour cues mediate this process. Forager wasps are attracted by the odour elicited by conspecifics. Wasps head squashes attract conspecifics eliciting landing and removal of head fragments. Head extract applied on filter paper attracts forager wasps eliciting landing, but behaviour differs according to the context of proxirnity to the nest or foraging conditions. We propose that a foraging related pheromone exists on Vespula germam'ca workers’ heads. We also analysed the cues used by an individual forager to relocate a feeding source. We found differences between the visual and micro-location cues utilised, depending on the type of food (protein or carbohydrates) offered during training sessions. Conocida vulgarrnente como chaqueta amarilla, este insecto es un depredador oportunista y generalista que también se alimenta de carroña, siendo capaz de desplegar mecanismos de atracción con­ específica hacia fiJentes abundantes de alimento. Su eficiencia en la explotación de los recursos permite a la colonia crecer rápidamente durante el verano, lo cual sen'a un factor importante en su éxito invasivo. El propósito de esta tesis es describir la situación de la avispa en nuestro país y estudiar algtmas características de su comportamiento de forrajeo, el cual consideramos de importancia e interés tanto desde el punto de vista teórico como por su utilidad en programas de control. En particular, esta tesis trata mayormente sobre la comunicación química con-específica durante el proceso de incremento local. Postulamos la existencia de una feromona vinculada al forrajeo, que estaría localizada en las cabezas de las avispas obreras de V.

    29] Stylopized Vespidx 249 STYLOPIZED VESPIDzE BY GEORGE SALT2 AND JOSEPH BEQUAERT It is becoming increasingly difficult to prepare a complete account of the various insects infested with Strepsiptera. Many of the early writers on these parasites gave lists of hosts without stating definitely whether they had them- selves seen stylopized specimens or whether their records were copied from earlier workers. Taxonomists have mentioned infested specimens in monographs of various host groups, so that many records have become scattered in articles not at all concerned with the parasites, where they are likely to be found only by a student of the hosts. Mis- takes in the identification of host species have caused much confusion; and the change of names, which seems inevitable in taxonomic revision, has greatly complicated the existing lists. As one of us (J.B.) has been for a number of years interested in the Vespidm, while the other (G.S.), in he course of studies on stylopization, has found it necessary to keep lists of stylopized wasps, we have thought that it would be useful to publish jointly an annotated list of the Vespidse known to be infested with Strepsiptera. Miller The known biology of Bareogonalos canadensis (Harrington) is based on literature records of six collections from three areas in the Pacific Northwest. The objective of this study was to obtain fundamental knowledge on the biology of B. canadensis, especially its distribution, abundance, and host species,as well as its potential for biological control of yellowjackets. This was accomplished by analyzing yellowjacket colonies from the Willamette Valley and the adjacent Coast Range forest. In 1986 and 1987 B. canadensis was found in 50 of 89 yellowjacket colonies collected from the Coast Range foothills of Oregon bordering the Willamette Valley. No B. canadensis were found in 103 colonies collected in the Willamette Valley. The parasitoid was reared from colonies of Vespula vulgaris (L.), V. Densylvanica (Saussure), V. atropilosa (Sladen) (new host record), V. consobrina (Saussure) (new host record), and Dolichovespula arenaria (F.), but was absent in nests of D. maculata (L.). Significant control of nestsor worker populations was not shown. Females were found to oviposit primarily in Douglas-fir needles [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] but also in other foliage including western hemlock [Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.], huckleberry (Vaccinium parvifolium Smith), and snowberry [Symphoricarpos albus (L.) Blake]. They did not oviposit in leaves of grass (Poa sp.), cultivated bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), or pitch pine (Pinus resinosa Ait). All collections of this parasitoid came from areas with Douglas-fir.

Report of Year 1 Activities to the Hawaii Invasive Species Council 7/8/19 Paul Krushelnycky Department of Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences University of Hawaii at Manoa Honolulu, Hawaii INTRODUCTION An absence of practical methods for controlling invasive ants that are primarily attracted to sweet liquid foods has been a persistent problem. Sugar-loving species are typically best controlled with sugar water-based baits dispensed in bait stations. In natural or agricultural landscape settings, deployment of numerous bait stations quickly becomes extremely laborious, costly, and in most cases prohibitive. Unfortunately, several of the most destructive established ant species in Hawaii belong to this sugar-loving group, including species that invade and impact natural areas, like the Argentine ant, yellow crazy ant and glaber ant, as well as urban and agricultural pests like white-footed ants and the odorous house ant. In addition, some worrisome new threats, like the tawny crazy ant currently invading the US mainland, belong to this group. A recent advance has employed polyacrylamide crystals, or hydrogels, to convert liquid baits into an easily dispersed granular form (Buczkowski et al. 2014a,b; Boser et al. 2017). These hydrogels, used as soil amendments in horticultural and forestry applications, absorb many times their weight in water and then slowly release it as they dry. They also absorb water containing dissolved sugar and pesticides, which ants can imbibe directly from the dispersed granules. Color/ color pattern expressions were modified under experimental conditions to produce forms having natural counterparts in the field. Principal coordinates analyses and trend surface analyses using specimens collected throughout the United States indicated three color pattern trends, representing three distinct geographic areas, and, when objectively defined, without intergradation between and/or among areas.
