Original Research A CHECKLIST OF THE NON -A C A RINE A R A CHNIDS (CHELICER A T A : AR A CHNID A ) OF THE DE HOOP NA TURE RESERVE , WESTERN CA PE PROVINCE , SOUTH AFRIC A Authors: ABSTRACT Charles R. Haddad1 As part of the South African National Survey of Arachnida (SANSA) in conserved areas, arachnids Ansie S. Dippenaar- were collected in the De Hoop Nature Reserve in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. The Schoeman2 survey was carried out between 1999 and 2007, and consisted of five intensive surveys between Affiliations: two and 12 days in duration. Arachnids were sampled in five broad habitat types, namely fynbos, 1Department of Zoology & wetlands, i.e. De Hoop Vlei, Eucalyptus plantations at Potberg and Cupido’s Kraal, coastal dunes Entomology University of near Koppie Alleen and the intertidal zone at Koppie Alleen. A total of 274 species representing the Free State, five orders, 65 families and 191 determined genera were collected, of which spiders (Araneae) South Africa were the dominant taxon (252 spp., 174 genera, 53 families). The most species rich families collected were the Salticidae (32 spp.), Thomisidae (26 spp.), Gnaphosidae (21 spp.), Araneidae (18 2 Biosystematics: spp.), Theridiidae (16 spp.) and Corinnidae (15 spp.). Notes are provided on the most commonly Arachnology collected arachnids in each habitat. Volume 111 1960 Number 3429 A REVISION OF THE GENUS OGCODES LATREILLE WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO SPECIES OF THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE By Evert I. Schlinger^ Introduction The cosmopolitan Ogcodes is the largest genus of the acrocerid or spider-parasite family. As the most highly evolved member of the subfamily Acrocerinae, I place it in the same general line of develop- ment as Holops Philippi, Villalus Cole, Thersitomyia Hunter, and a new South African genus.^ Ogcodes is most closely associated with the latter two genera . The Ogcodes species have never been treated from a world point of view, and this probably accounts for the considerable confusion that exists in the literature. However, several large regional works have been published that were found useful: Cole (1919, Nearctic), Brunetti (192G, miscellaneous species of the world, mostly from Africa and Australia), Pleske (1930, Palaearctic), Sack (1936. Palaearctic), and Sabrosky (1944, 1948, Nearctic). Up to this time 97 specific names have been applied to species and subspecies of this genus. Of these, 19 were considered synonyms, hence 78 species were assumed valid. Luhman Plant Industry Division Minnesota Department of Agriculture St. Paul, MN 55107 Abstract Amphibulus Kriechbaumer (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae, Phygadeuontinae = Gelinae, Gelini) is revised world-wide. It is separated from its sister group genus Endasys Foerster by means of a key and a di- agnosis. Keys are given to 3 speciesgroupsand 25 species, including EuropeangracilisKriechbaumer and fen- nicus Sawoniewicz. Mexican satageus (Cresson)isredescribed, and 22 species are newly described:africanus, awanticeps, aurarius, aweolus, bicolor, borealis, carinarum, dentatus, duodentatus, eurystomatus, flavipes, htioris, nigripes, orientalis, pentatylus, pilosus, pseudopustulae, pustulae, pyrrhoborealis, rugosus, salicis, and tetratylus. (Acari: Parasitidae) is described based on females, deutonymphs and males extracted from leaf litter and soil in Ami, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. Morphological differences between the new species and its closely related species, Vulgarogamasus fujisanus (Ishikawa, 1972), are recorded based on the examination of type mate- rials. Information about parasitid mites reported in Japanese literature is reviewed, and a key to species is provided. I0024 NUMBER 2292 APRIL 24, I967 Descriptions of the Spider Families Desidae and Argyronetidae BY VINCENT D. ROTH1 The marine spiders of the genus Desis Walckenaer and the Eurasian water spider Argyroneta aquatica (Clerck) have been considered by most arachnologists to be aberrant members of the family Agelenidae. The family Desidae was established in 1895 for Desis but since has been ignored. The family Argyronetidae, proposed in 1870, has been used as follows: exclusively for the genus Argyroneta Latreille; for Argyroneta and certain genera of cybaeinids as an expanded family; and for Argyroneta and the entire agelenid subfamily Cybaeinae. None of the revisers offered adequate reasons for his placement of the genera in the family Argyro- netidae. The present study was initiated because of the uncertain status of Desis and Argyroneta and the lack of published evidence supporting place- ment of them. As a result, I herein propose that each again be elevated to family status. The remaining genera previously associated with the family Argyronetidae belong to the subfamily Cybaeinae of the family Agelenidae (see Roth, 1967a, p. 302, for a description of the family). Protection of Pandora Moth (Coloradia Pandora Blake) Eggs from Consumption by Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrels (Spermophilus Lateralis Say)

McComb Endemic populations of pandora moths (Coloradia pandora Blake), a defoliator of western pine forests, proliferated to epidemic levels in central Oregon in 1986 and increased dramatically through 1994. Golden-mantled ground squirrels (Spermophilus lateralis Say) consume adult pandora moths, but reject nutritionally valuable eggs from gravid females. Feeding trials with captive S. lateralis were conducted to identify the mode of egg protection. Chemical constituents of fertilized eggs were separated through a polarity gradient of solvent extractions. Consumption of the resulting hexane, dichloromethane, and water egg fractions, and the extracted egg tissue residue, was evaluated by randomized 2-choice feeding tests. Consumption of four physically distinct egg fractions (whole eggs, "whole" egg shells, ground egg shells, and egg contents) also was evaluated. These bioassays indicated that C. pandora eggs are not protected chemically, however, the egg shell does inhibit S. lateralis consumption. Egg protection is one mechanism that enables C. pandora to persist within the forest food web. After publishing the Bibliographia Oribatologica for more than thirty years, and the Bibliographia Mesostigmatologica since 1990, we are now extending this series with a bibliography of the Actinedida. The Natural History Museum in Görlitz has a long history of soil-zoological research, so that it was only logical that the Bibliographia be extended by this third, important soil-mite group.
