Eliot y el debate humanista EL HUMANISMO DE CERVANTES JEAN CANAVAGGIO “El humanismo derramado en los libros de Cervantes se nos hace inteli- gible si sabemos que es un humanismo cristiano transmitido por un maestro erasmizante”1. Además de valorar así la importancia de Juan López de Hoyos, rector del madrileño Estudio de la Villa, en la formación de su “caro y amado discípulo”, Marcel Bataillon, en un libro memorable, caracterizó de esta ma- nera el impacto que el humanismo tuvo, según él, sobre un autor que el posi- tivismo decimonónico había calificado, si no de genio inconsciente, al menos de escritor sin ideas personales. Ahora bien, cualquier aproximación al huma- nismo de Cervantes nos enfrenta con dos interrogantes previos. Primero, ¿cómo definir el humanismo, tratándose de un concepto que ha tomado, con el tiempo, diferentes acepciones? Luego, ¿en qué medida es lícito asociarlo con la personalidad y la obra del autor del Quijote? De hecho, poco sabemos de sus estudios académicos, y en cuanto a su “pensamiento”, reivindicado por Américo Castro en un estudio fundamental2, no se puede enfocar como un sistema o una doctrina articulada, como si nos hubiera dejado tratados de eru- dición. Conviene, en tales condiciones, tener presentes estas dos preguntas a la hora de emprender el examen que nos proponemos realizar aquí. Nacido en Alemania en el siglo XIX, el término “humanismo” ha admi- tido, desde su aparición, varias definiciones, hasta designar, hoy en día, cualquier doctrina que toma a la persona humana por fin3. Essai de définition”, en Luisa López Grigera y Augustín Redondo, Homenaje a Eugenio Asensio, Madrid, Gredos, 1988, pp. 345-360. 9 10 JEAN CANAVAGGIO maron a sí mismos “humanistas”, forjando este neologismo latino para dar cuenta de un saber generalmente adquirido en las aulas universitarias: el de las letras griegas y latinas, o, para emplear términos acuñados por ellos, un amplio dominio de las “letras humanas” o “letras de humanidad” (studia hu- manitatis), diferenciadas así de las letras sagradas. Esta primera acepción no parece, en principio, poder aplicarse a Cervantes. El calificativo de “ingenio lego” que se aplicó primero a sí mismo, reiterado por Tamayo de Vargas al- gunos años después de su muerte4, solía designar, con connotaciones a veces despectivas, a los que no habían pasado por dichas aulas. Este fue, precisa- mente, el caso de nuestro escritor, de quien ignoramos, a falta de datos con- cretos, las circunstancias exactas en que inició sus estudios. Lo que se sabe de su infancia en Valladolid concierne esencialmente las desgracias de Ro- drigo, su padre, encarcelado por deudas durante varios meses, pero no nos aclara la suerte que conocieron sus hijos. En cuanto a las estancias del ciru- jano, primero en Córdoba, con el abuelo de Miguel, el licenciado Juan de Cervantes, y luego en Sevilla, donde, al parecer, estuvo regentando unas casas de alquiler, no nos permiten decir si el futuro autor del Quijote com- partió o no su vida. Por esta misma razón, conviene ser sumamente cautos antes de recoger ciertas afirmaciones carentes de verdadero fundamento. No hay prueba, en particular, de que fuera alumno del colegio de San Her- menegildo, fundado en la ciudad del Betis por los PP. Jesuitas, y hace falta esperar el año 1569, cuando ya tiene 22 años y acaba de abandonar Madrid, tal vez a consecuencia de un misterioso duelo, para encontrar el único testi- monio que se conserva de su carrera académica: la ya citada mención, por Juan López de Hoyos, de su destacado alumno, en tanto que autor de cuatro de los poemas incluidos en la Relación de las exequias fúúnebres de la Reyna Isa- bel de Valoys, prematuramente fallecida pocos meses antes5. Park examines the life and philosophy of the Korean Zen Buddhist nun Kim Iryŏp. By retracing the evolution of Iryŏp’s philosophy, the book not only explores a distinct way of doing philosophy—narrative philosophy—but also demonstrates a Buddhist nun’s full agency in her conversion as well as her dedicated Buddhist practice. Key words: Iryŏp; Zen Buddhism; feminism; religious women; agency Jin Y. Park explores the fascinating life and philosophy of the Korean Zen Buddhist nun Kim Iryŏp (1896-1971) in Women and Buddhist Philosophy: Engaging Zen Master Kim Iryŏp. Living through an era of utter political turmoil in Korea that spans the twentieth century, Iryŏp went through an extraordinary life transition from a trail-blazing liberal feminist (“New Woman”) to a Buddhist nun. The book is divided into two parts: the first focuses on Iryŏp’s life and philosophy before she encounters Buddhism, and the second chronicles her life and philosophy after she embraces Buddhism. Although this book could have been a straightforward biography that examines the life of an exceptional individual, Park’s approach aspires to be more than that: its goal is to differentiate a distinct way of doing philosophy—what Park calls “narrative philosophy”—from mainstream western philosophy involving theories and abstraction. By examining how her life events affected the evolution of Iryŏp’s thinking, Park aims to illustrate narrative philosophy, a kind of philosophy that “deeply engages [...] with the narrative discourse of [one’s] daily experiences” (6).

    The Life and Letters of Sŏn Master Hanam Ven. Chong21Go This article is the first of a series examining the life and letters of sŏn master Hanam Sunim. One of several outstanding sŏn masters who appeared in Korea during the end of the Chosŏn dynasty and the Japanese occupation of Korea, Hanam Sunim played a major role in sustaining and invigorating the Buddhism of Korea. Yet until recently there has been very little research on his life or thought in any language, let alone English. To this end, this first article will examine his life while following articles will examine the major themes that appear in his letters. Key words: Hanam Chungwŏn, Biography, Letters, Kyŏnghŏ, Kŏngbong. I. Introduction The end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century was a turbulent time for the people of Korea.     Preface A Message of Congratulations The defining characteristic of Korean Buddhism is its long tradition of Ganhwa Seon,1 or “word-contemplation meditation,” a tradition that is rarely found in any other country in the world. At present, every year about 2,000 monks practice this style of rigorous meditation, especially during the three-month long Summer and Winter retreats, at some one hundred Seon Halls around Korea. In the past, however, there were many difficult times in the tradition of Ganhwa Seon in our history, and it was the great Seon Master Gyeongheo (1846- 1912) who overcame these crises and restored the foundation of Korean 1 Seon is the Korean pronunciation of the character (禪), which in China is pronounced Chan, and in Japan, Zen. While these schools share a similar root, they have developed differently within each culture, and thus, we use the term Seon to represent the unique practice of the tradition in Korea. The Collected Writings of Gyeongheo 5 in the tradition of the mind-to-mind meditation practice of the Linji Order. The Master established a number of meditation centers at monasteries and temples, such as Cheonjang Monastery and Sudeok Temple in South Chungcheong Province, Beomeo Monastery in Busan, Haein Monastery in South Gyeongsang Province, and Songgwang and Hwaeom Monasteries in Cheolla Province. He also promoted the tradition of Seon by cultivating countless disciples, among them, the Master's chief Dharma disciples, Mangong Wolmyeon, Hyewol, Suwol, and Hanam. But, in fact, the Master was the teacher of countless Seon masters who contributed to the revival of Korean Buddhism in its modern history and who established the foundation of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, the major Buddhist Order in Korea.

Even so, the movement has never been introduced to outside of South Korea, so the writer is to inform the readers of visualizing the movement’s general picture. There are only several academic articles on the movement even in the Korean language. In 2000, Korean Buddhists held a seminar on the movement in the first time and in 2001 published the first academic book on the subject with the collection of the articles presented at the seminar.1 Gim Gwangsik, specialist in modern and contemporary Korean Buddhism, leading the research on the subject, along with I Cheolgyo, compiled source materials for Purification Buddhist movement in 1996,2 which smoothly paved historians and sociologists in modern and current Korean Buddhism to conduct research on the movement academically and extensively. Introduction It is commonly known that two principal pillars of Buddhism are ‘Wisdom’ and ‘Compassion.’ These two are understood as the ‘Essence’ and the ‘Function’ respectively. It is also said that the perfect wisdom is mainly attained by meditation practice and eventually realized by enlightenment; the great compassion is naturally derived by the perfect wisdom of non-duality and applied by the skilful means through the wisdom. It is remarkable that ‘Mindfulness’ has been gotten attention from people of the world and popularized as a representative word of Buddhist spirituality in recent decades. Mindfulness is a mind practice and refers to some practical characteristics including awareness, attention, concentration, insight, remembering and the certain positive state of mind. It is a way of attaining clear and peaceful mind as well as insight overcoming troubles of mind in terms of the mental and psychological aspects. It is known as a Buddhist meditation itself or the state of mind which has developed by meditation depending on contexts. It is very significant that scholars and practitioners from various Buddhist traditions get together to share their ideas and experiences about ‘Mindfulness,’ as the theme at the 3rd IABU conference for UNDV celebration, not only good for them but also for people around world. To join this global conference, I would like to introduce “Buddhist Meditation Tradition in Korea” focusing on Seon (Chan/Zen). At first, I will review the historical background and lineage of the topic from its beginning to the present. Secondly, I will introduce its way of practice and the results of it.
