My humble position as editor was facilitated by fortune of my personal and precious encounter with him as my spiritual guide and religious advisor. The following brief explanation of my relation with him might help readers understand how this book has been published. In late 1995, I was able to come to the United States through the invitation of Ven. Daewon Ki and began to have a deep relation with him. Since then, he has remained a spiritual advisor and a major financial patron to me. In mid-1995, I was discharged from the Korean Army as a Buddhist chaplain officer after serving around three and half a years. Afterwards, I traveled to several nations with deep connections with Buddhism, such as India, Nepal, China, Thailand and so on, for half a year. While in travel, I recognized how important English was as a communication medium in the international context. In late 1995, Ven. Daewon Ki invited me to come to the United States where I naturally had the opportunity to learn English. I cannot forget how much he helped me become accustomed to the new world during my stay in Hawaii between December 1995 and August 1997. For instance, he took me to the Social Security Administration Office to let me apply for a Social Security Number, arranged for me to take the driver license exam and helped me to open a bank account.

Both religious leaders not only survived persecution, but brought their faiths to greater heights. This paper studies how these masters adapted Chan Buddhist teachings to the woes and conditions of their times. In particular, I shall review how yixuan and Hsing yun adapted the teachings of their predecessors, added value to the socio-political milieu of their times, and used familiar language to reconcile reality and their beliefs. Background These two Chan masters were selected because of the significance of their contributions. Lirlji Yixuan was not only the founder ofa popular Lirlji2) school in Chan Buddhism but was also posthumously awarded the title of Meditation Master of and Wisdom Illumination(HuizhaoChanshi ue,H", maeM)(Sasaki Kirchner 2oog, s2) by Emperor Yizong em7 of the Tang dynasty (r. 859-873). Hsing Yun, a very strong proponent ofHumanistic Buddhism, is currently the recipient of ls honorary doctorate degrees from universities around the world (Shi and Weng 2015). To have received such accolades, both Chan masters ought to have made momentous contribution to their societies. Although Yixuan and Hsing Yun had humble beginnings, they were well-grounded in Buddhist teachings.

The C.M.L.A. hoped that the people being imbibed with the ideals of sacrifice, patriotism, friendship and love of mankind of Atisa Dipankar would take part in the greater struggle of building the nation. He called upon the participating delegates to carry with them the message of peace, fraternity, brotherhood, love and non-violence from the people of Bangladesh to the people of their respective countries. Barua COLONIALISM, EDUCATION, AND RURAL BUDDHIST COMMUNITIES IN BANGLADESH Bijoy Barua Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto Toronto, Canada Cultural homogenization through the establishment of a central- ized and standardized curriculum in education has become the dominant model in Bangladesh today, a model of education that is deeply rooted in the colonial legacy of materialism, acquisitiveness, and social exclusion (B. Such a model is predicated on the notion that Bangladesh “is culturally homogenous, with one language, one domi- nant religion, and no ethnic conflict” (Hussain, 2000, p. 52). The central focus of the inquiry is on the ways Lao folk opera currently functions as a learning medium in the resettlement context. The need for validation of such locally produced endogenous media has become increasingly apparent as long term resettlement issues continue to emerge as threats to linguistic and cultural diversity. The review of literature encompasses the role of oral specialists in traditional societies, Buddhist epistemology in the Theravada tradition, and community education in rural Lao culture. These sources provide the background necessary to an understanding of the medium's capacity for encapsulating culture and teaching ethical values in ways that connect past to present, distant to near.
