Rooms available on arrival On arrival you will be meet and greeted then transfer to your hotel The Royal Plaza. Rooms will be available at the time of arrival. Breakfast at Hotel. Lunch at the hotel and then leave for your city tour of « Old Delhi ». Chandni Chowk Chandni Chowk is the major street in the walled city of Old Delhi, which was originally called Shahjahanabad. The walled city, which includes the Lal Qila or Red Fort of Delhi, was established in 1650 AD by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. It was designed by his daughter Jahanara Begum Sahib, who also made significant contributions in the landscaping of her father's new capital. Chandni Chowk runs through the middle of the walled city, from the Lahori Darwaza (Lahore Gate) of the Red Fort to Fatehpuri Masjid. Originally, a canal ran through the middle of the street as a part of the water supply scheme. Raj Ghat Raj Ghat is a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi. Originally it was the name of a historic ghat of Old Delhi (Shahjahanabad) on the banks of Yamuna river. Close to it, and east of Daryaganj was “Raj Ghat Gate” of the walled city, opening at Raj Ghat on Yamuna River.[1][2] Later the memorial area was also called Raj ghat. It is a black marble platform that marks the spot of Mahatma Gandhi's cremation, Antyesti (Antim Sanskar) on 31 January 1948, a day after his assassination. It is left open to the sky while an eternal flame burns perpetually at one end. It is located on the banks of the river Yamuna in Delhi in India on Ring Road officially known as Mahatma Gandhi Road. A stone footpath flanked by lawns leads to the walled enclosure that houses the memorial. All guests must remove their shoes before entering the Raj Ghat walls. Rickshaw Ride in the bazaars. Humayun’s Tomb One of the most spectacular Mughal buildings, Humayun's tomb was added to Unesco's World Heritage List in 1993. Built by Haji Begum, the widow of Humanyun, the second Mughal Emperor, the mausoleum is known to the precursor of world famous Taj Mahal. Built with a cost of one and a half million rupees, the monument heralded the construction of garden-tombs on the Indian subcontinent. Experience the majesty of Humayun's tomb with Hotels of New Delhi. Saurabh MEHTA Portable: 0091 9810084418 / E mail: [email protected] 20 E, Basant Lok Community Center, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi 110 057 As soon as one enters the massive double-storeyed gateway, the majesty of the building becomes self-evident. High walls surrounds a square garden which is divided into four large squares separated by causeways and water channels. Each square, in turn, is divided into smaller squares by pathways. This forms a typical Mughal garden known as charbagh. Highly developed engineering skills were employed in the working out of the fountains. Though made of red sandstone, black and yellow stone was used to give variation. Humanyun's Tomb came into the scene during the First War of Indian Independence in 1857. When the uprising failed, Bahadur Shah II, the last Mughal emperor, took refuge in the tomb, before he was sent to the Rangoon jail in Myanmar. The tomb stands majestically at the center of the enclosure and rises from a platform faced with a series of cells with arched openings. The complex of Humayun's Tomb contains many small monuments. Chief among them are black-and-yellow marble tomb of Humayun's wife and the tomb of Humayun's barber. Referred to as Nai Ka Gumbad, the barber's tomb is an impressive square tomb with a double-dome. Dinner & Overnight at Hôtel. Day 3 – DELHI PARO Post breakfast, departure transfer to airport for flight to Paro. On a clear day the panoramic views of the Himalaya are sensational, including Everest, but particularly exciting is the approach through the Bhutanese foothills and the landing, including a few steep turns to land at the tiny airstrip of Paro. In Paro you will be received by your Bhutanese guide and transferred to your hotel. Kichu Lhakhang: Kyichu is one of the oldest temples in Bhutan built in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. The story goes that a giant demoness lay across Tibet and the Himalayas, which was preventing the spread of Buddhism. To overcome her, King Songtsen Gampo decided to build 108 temples in a single day to pin the ogress to the earth forever in 659AD. Of these 108 temples, 12 were built in accordance with precise plans at key points. The temple of Jokhang in Lhasa was built over the very heart of the demoness and Kichu is said to have been built on the left foot. Dungtshe Lhakhang: Dungtse Lhakhang was constructed by the great bridge-builder Thangtong Gyelpo in 1433. It is said to have been built on the head of demoness, who was causing illness to the inhabitants. The building was restored in 1841 and is a unique repository of Kagyu lineage arts. You may or may not be permitted inside but can walk around this three-storey Chorten-type building. Paro Rinpung Dzong: Rinphung Dzong was consecrated in 1645 by Shabdrung Nawang Namgyal on the site of smaller fort. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries it served as a bastion against invasion from the north. It is regarded as one of the finest Bhutanese architecture - with intricate wood work, large beams slotted into each other and held Saurabh MEHTA Portable: 0091 9810084418 / E mail: [email protected] 20 E, Basant Lok Community Center, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi 110 057 together without nails. In it houses the giant 30m X 45m Thangka (Thongdrol), commissioned in mid 18th century, displayed on the last day of Paro Tsechu festival. Rinphung Dzong is the district headquarter of Paro and residence of state monks under Paro rabdey. Overnight at hotel, Paro. Day 4 – PARO In the morning hike to the Tiger’s nest. You can also take a pony ride to halfway to the most highlighted Buddhist temple in entire Himalayas. Taktshang - Tiger's Nest: Tiger's Lair or Tiger's Nest as it often referred to for Taktshang Pelphung monastery, is one of the most venerated and famous of Bhutan's monasteries. It is located on the face of a sheer 900m cliff above the floor of Paro valley. It is an impressive and un-miss-able sight but accessible only by walk or to ride mules/pony. If you need the riding horse, you must ask your local guide to arrange it on the previous day. From the trail head (2600m), the walk till the Cafeteria is a steep one hour uphill (about 350m ascent). From the Cafeteria (2940m) and areas around it, one can get a good close-up view of Taktshang. Savor views of the monastery over a well-deserved cup of tea and biscuits at the cafeteria. For those who wish to proceed further from here, one must be able to walk. Usually Ponies/horses will not take people beyond this point and neither will they take you downhill. From the cafeteria, trail continues uphill for another 45 minutes to a high observation point (3140m) where there is a Chorten (stupa). From this vantage point, the lookout to the monastery is a very spectacular and seems almost close enough to touch. It is now on the other side of a deep chasm, only around 150m away as bird flies, but takes half hour or even more to reach. Continue down the flight of cliff-hanging steps on the narrow trail to a beautiful waterfall that plunges down the deep chasm and alongside is a retreat hermitage, jammed dramatically into a rock crevice. Then climb up the flight of steep steps to the monastery. At any point on this walk, you can always return if you find it too difficult. Once inside the monastery, there are several shrines or temples to see with few monks in residence. After visiting Taktshang monastery’s many shrines, most tours schedule lunch at the Cafeteria upon return. After lunch, retrace back to the road-head where you started in the morning. The retrace back is all downhill and always on foot as it is not suitable for riding pony/horse. Please note that proper walking boots is recommended for this hike. Further, if you have more time and ready for more challenging day, there are several monasteries, temples, retreat houses in the surrounding area of Taktshang. The most notable among them are Zangdopelri and Ugyen Tsemo as described seperately. According to the legend, Guru Padmasambhava or Guru Rinpoche, who spread the Buddhism across the entire Himalayas is said to have flown here in the 8th century on the back of a Tigress, in order to subdue negative spiritual forces that were hostile to spread of Buddhism. In 853, one of his students, Pelgyi Senge mediated here in the main cave. A Stupa inside one of the temples contains his mortal remains and therefore the cave is known as 'Pelphung 'or 'Pelgi's cave'. Subsequently many great spiritual masters such as Milarepa, Thangthong Gyalpo, Phajo Dugom Zhigpo, Shadrung and many others passed periods here in profound meditation. In 1692, Tenzin Rabgye built a two storey temple around what little may have Saurabh MEHTA Portable: 0091 9810084418 / E mail: [email protected] 20 E, Basant Lok Community Center, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi 110 057 existed previously.

  • Dzongs in the Land of the Thunder Dragon
JOURNAL OF ASIAN ARTS, CULTURE AND LITERATURE (JAACL) VOL 1, NO 1: MARCH 2020 Dzongs in the Land of the Thunder Dragon By Dr. Aparna Bagwe [email protected] Abstract The Kingdom of Bhutan is often referred to as the last Shangri la. For several centuries, this land-locked country - nestled in the lap of the snow-clad peaks and valleys of the eastern Himalayas - has been safeguarded by wise rulers who have maintained its isolated status, thus preserving its distinct Buddhist identity, culture and traditions. In 1974, Bhutan carefully opened its doors to selective numbers of tourists in a bid to promote its unique culture, offering outsiders glimpses into a very different way of life. Through the memoirs of my visit to Bhutan almost a decade back, I shall take the readers on a virtual walk to some of the ancient dzongs (fortress monasteries) of this Himalayan Kingdom. Keywords Dzongs, Bhutan, Paro, Punakha, Thimphu Introduction Buddhism was introduced into the region occupied by present day Bhutan around the 7th century AD, and the first Buddhist temples were constructed at Bumthang and Kyichu. The region, ruled over by several feudal lords constantly at war against each other, was unified in the early 17th century by the Tibetan lama and military leader Ngawang Namgyal, who went on to build a protective network of impregnable dzongs to defend the country against intermittent attacks from Tibet. In the 1880s, Ugyen Wangchuk came into power and in 1907, he was unanimously chosen as the hereditary king of the country. King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck from this distinguished lineage is the present reigning monarch.

  • Thimphu to Paro
Guides & Suggested Itineraries Our first tip: always go to your guide for discussions big and small. Whether you’re a fast walker/climber, prefer going slow to have a feel of the land, wish to swap a place out for another – do share, so we’ve time to make arrangements. Do note that your final itinerary is still subject to changes, perhaps due to ad-hoc local events or weather conditions etc. Two: this itinerary is best used as a reference, rather than a fixed guide. Seen enough of monasteries and dzongs (fortresses)? Your guide could arrange a trek. Feeling like a change of pace? A hot stone bath could replace the archery session. Or you could be really lucky; like one of our guests who bumped into the King of Bhutan while descending from Taktsang Monastery. Having only opened her doors to the world in 1974, do note that while a trip to say, a museum may not carry the same standards as the Louvre, France – Bhutan’s people are one of the friendliest and jolliest you’ll meet. Three: Yours is an exclusive holiday, not to be combined with other groups at any point of stay. This explains the freedom to be flexible on this trip of a lifetime – time and weather permitting, and to the final professional discretion of your guide. First Two Days We know that the time you spend in Bhutan is important and with over 13,000 trips already clocked by our guides – your satisfaction remains top priority. On the off chance that a change of guide is requested, local contacts are available in the Travellers Portal (or visa approval email) – as part of our sincere desire to maintain the level of customer service that our visitors have come to rely upon.
