April 2020, 19 Uhr L‘Arabesque – Chinoiserien des Barock Mit dem „Marais Consort“ (Hans-Georg Kramer und Katharina Holzhey, Viola da Gamba, und Ingelore Schubert, Cembalo) Alte Musik im Haus der Musik Im Hochbarock beginnen die Menschen plötzlich, sich mit einer neuen Weltoffenheit und Neugier für fremde Kulturen zu interessieren. Das findet Eingang in die eigene Kulturwelt: Möbel, Geschirr und Instrumente erhalten Oltremontani entsprechende Dekorationen, Musik trägt exotische Titel wie Chinoiserie und Arabeske. Dabei hat die Umsetzung zumeist etwas durchaus Naives und Unterhaltendes: So ist man nie sicher, ob nicht eine gute Portion Ironie Mit New York Polyphony im Spiel ist, wenn bei Rameau Indianer in Indien auftauchen oder Marais die Georgier und die Tartarinnen portraitiert ... Mit dem Ensemble „Alta Bellezza“ (Ann Allen, Schalmei, Pommer, Flöten / Hanna Geisel, Schalmei, Pommer, Dudelsack, Percussion / Nathaniel Wood, Businen, Zugtrompeten, Posaune) Die Vorfahren vieler unserer Orchesterinstrumente stammen ursprünglich aus islamischen Kulturen. In seinem Programm „Orientexpress!“ folgt das Ensemble „Alta Bellezza“ den Spuren dieses für die europäische Kunstmusik so produktiven Imports: Ausgehend aus dem arabischen Raum etablierten sich im 14. Oltremontani Zum Programm Jacob Clemens non Papa Tristitia obsedit me Mit dem Programm „Oltremontani“ nimmt das Vokalensemble „New York (ca. 1510-ca. 1555) Polyphony“ die franco-flämischen Komponisten in den Blick, die „über die Berge“ nach Italien gingen und dort den polyphonen Stil der Renaissance weiterentwickelten: Philippe Verdelot Gabriel Archangelus Philippe Verdelot gehörte zu der ersten Generation von Komponisten, die (ca. 1480/85-ca. 1530/32) das Madrigal entwickelten, zumeist im homophonen Stil und mit Texten zur Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina Missa Gabriel Archangelus Natur. Die zweite Generation des italienischen Madrigals wurde von (ca. 1525-1594) Kyrie – Gloria Cipriano de Rore angeleitet (zuvor unterrichtet vom Flamen Adrian Willaert), der zunehmend Kontrapunktik, dramatische Textmalerei und Themen wie Liebe und Krieg einführte. Adrian Willaert Pater noster Di Lasso wiederum zählt zusammen mit Palestrina, Byrd und Victoria zu den (ca. 1490-1562) Ave Maria bedeutendsten Komponisten der Renaissance und sein Miniatur-Chanson "La nuit froide et sombre" zeigt die komplette Entwicklung des polyphonischen Stils der Renaissance: polyphone Imitation, homphoner Cipriano de Rore Anchor che col partire Textaufbau und rhetorische Wendungen. (1515/16-1565) Mia benigna fortuna Eine weitere Begegnung findet sich in den Sätzen einer Parodiemesse von Reiouyssons nous Palestrina, die mit der originalen Motette von Verdelot gepaart werden. New York Polyphony Orlando di Lasso La nuit froide et sombre (ca. 1532-1594) Alte Musik ist sicherlich nicht das, was einem zuerst in den Sinn kommt, wenn man an New York denkt! Aber seit einigen Jahren gibt es dort mit „New Philippe Verdelot O dolce nocte York Polyphony“ ein aus vier Sängern bestehendes Vokalensemble, das die (ca. 1480/85-ca. 1530/32) Welt – zumindest die der Alten Musik – immer wieder aufhorchen lässt und begeistert. Das Zentrum der Konzerte und der von der Presse bejubelten sowie oft mit renommierten Preisen ausgezeichneten CD-Aufnahmen des Jacques Arcadelt Quando ritrovo Vokalensembles bildet Musik aus Mittelalter und Renaissance aus vielen (ca. 1505-1568) Ländern Europas. Allerdings haben sie sich die vier Sänger immer auch mit Costanzo Festa Ogni belta Madonna zeitgenössischer Musik auseinandergesetzt und scheuen sich nicht, mit (ca. 1485/90-1545) Musik zu experimentieren: So kreierten sie u.a. für das Museum für Francesco Patavino Dilla da l'acqua sta Naturkunde in Berlin gemeinsam mit dem Komponisten Gregory Brown die (ca. 1487-ca. 1556) "Missa Charles Darwin", bei der der Bariton Christopher Herbert Worte Darwins als Texte für die verschiedenen Teile der Messe adaptierte. That is another aspect of “middling” tone; but it accords well with the votive aspects of Marian worship, the component of the Christian liturgy that in those days was most intensely “personal.” That, too, was something that could be thematized by a knowing composer, especially a knowing churchman-composer. The supreme case in point for a fifteenth-century motet is the third and most splendid setting Du Fay made of the Marian antiphon Ave Regina coelorum, copied into the choirbooks of Cambrai Cathedral in 1465. It is as impressive a motet as Du Fay or anyone ever composed, but it is impressive in an altogether different way from his earlier large-scale motet settings. Where the isorhythmic Nuper rosarum flores (Ex. 8-8) had impressed by its monumentality, Ave Regina coelorum impresses with an altogether unprecedented expressive intensity—unprecedented, that is, within the motet genre. The personal and votive aspect of this motet are epitomized in a moving set of tropes that Du Fay interpolated into the canonical text of the antiphon, representing a prayer for his own salvation that he wanted sung at his deathbed, and that he wanted to go on being recited after his death in perpetuity, for which, a rich man, he provided an endowment in his will: Ave regina coelorum, Hail, O Queen of Heaven! Ave Domina angelorum, Hail, O Ruler of the Angels! Miserere tui Have mercy on labentis Dufaÿ Thy failing Du Fay, Ne peccatorum throw him not into the in ignem fervorum.

    Published Editions and Anthologies of the 19th Century: Music of the Renaissance or Renaissance Music? Leeman L. Perkins his essay represents an attempt to clarify – to whatever extent possible T– some of the ways in which the historical concept of a Renaissance was defined for music in the course of the 19th century. It takes as a point of de- parture a fundamental assumption and a matter of history. The assumption is that our understanding of the music of any given period is essentially dependent upon the repertory available for study. And the well-documented historical fact is that the 19th century was for Europe a period of growing historicism with respect to the music of its past. If one goes back as far as the late 15th century, music more than about 40 years old was not considered worth hearing – if the view of Johannes Tinctoris is in any way typical. By mid-16th century Heinrich Glarean had extended that interval to 70 years, but in the 16th and 17th centuries generally there is little evidence of interest in music that was not in more or less current repertory, dating back at most a generation or so. Even in the 18th century, which saw the beginnings of serious historical research into the music of earlier periods typified in the work of authors such as Hawkins, Burney, and Forkel, the approach could be described as antiquarian in nature. The compositions surviving from earlier times were viewed largely as curious (and usually as rather crude) relics. By contrast the 19th century is characterized more and more by an interest in the compositions of previous periods as they actually sounded, as artistic creations with their own stylistic norms and valid esthetic appeal.

We’ll explore madrigals from early and later stages of each composer, with texts by Petrarch, Bembo, Tasso, and Guarini. Dido and Aeneas (Degrugillier - recorders and viols - intermediate to upper-intermediate) Henry Purcell’s chamber opera Dido and Aeneas was his first and only all-sung opera, and it derives from the English masque tradition.     Madrigal (music) 1 Madrigal (music) A madrigal is a secular vocal music composition, usually a partsong, of the Renaissance and early Baroque eras. Traditionally, polyphonic madrigals are unaccompanied; the number of voices varies from two to eight, and most frequently from three to six. Madrigals originated in Italy during the 1520s. Unlike many strophic forms of the time, most madrigals were through-composed. In the madrigal, the composer attempted to express the emotion contained in each line, and sometimes individual words, of a celebrated poem. The madrigal originated in part from the frottola, in part from the resurgence in interest in vernacular Italian poetry, and also from the influence of the French chanson and polyphonic style of the motet as written by the Franco-Flemish composers who had naturalized in Italy during the period. A frottola generally would consist of music set to stanzas of text, while madrigals were through-composed. However, some of the same poems were used for both frottola and madrigals.[1] The poetry of Petrarch in particular shows up in a wide variety of genres.[1] The madrigal is related mostly by name alone to the Italian trecento madrigal of the late 13th and 14th centuries.[2] In Italy, the madrigal was the most important secular form of music of its time. The madrigal reached its formal and historical zenith by the second half of the 16th century. English and German composers, too, took up the madrigal in its heyday. After the 1630s, the madrigal began to merge with the cantata and the dialogue.
