That lifted them to second in the section ahead of third-placed APOEL, who were beaten 1-0 at home by leaders Chelsea last time out. Match background • This will be the first time the teams have met in a competitive fixture and the first time Porto have encountered opposition from Cyprus. • APOEL will not recall their only previous visit to Portugal with any relish as it ended in a 16-1 defeat at Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 1963/64 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first round – this remains a record loss for any side in UEFA club competition. It was followed by a 2-0 reverse at home. • No senior side from Cyprus has ever beaten or even drawn with Portuguese opposition at club or international level. Team ties • The game represents a homecoming for three Portuguese members of the APOEL squad. Nuno Morais started his career with FC Penafiel in Portugal's second division and during a three-year period at Chelsea spent 2005/06 on loan at CS Marítimo. Paulo Jorge began his professional career with SC Braga in 2002 and remained there until joining APOEL this year, while Hélio Pinto was a youth player with SL Benfica. Of the trio, only Pinto did not face Porto during his time in Portugal. • Jean Paulista spent seven seasons in Portugal between 1998 and 2005, turning out for SC Farense, Braga, CD Aves, Vitória FC and FC Maia. • Marcin Żewłakow came on as a 56th-minute substitute for Poland in a 4-0 defeat by Portugal in a 2002 FIFA World Cup group-stage match in Jeonju, South Korea. • Altin Haxhi played for Albania in a 2-0 defeat by Portugal in a 1998 World Cup qualifying tie held at Porto's former Estádio das Antas home. He scored the winner in the home leg, but his side lost 3-1 on aggregate. • Now at Anorthosis Famagusta FC, former Porto midfielder Ricardo Fernandes was a cult hero at APOEL from 2005 to 2008. • Daniel Kenedy is another former Porto player who appeared for APOEL, representing the Cypriot side from 2005 to 2006. Match facts Porto UEFA milestones • Porto have scored 246 goals in the European Champion Clubs' Cup. • The Portuguese titleholders have also conceded 294 goals in UEFA club competition overall. UEFA Champions League statistics • Fernando is available again having served a one-game ban on Matchday 2 following his red card against Chelsea FC. Latest domestic information • Saturday 17 October: FC Porto 4-0 Sertanense FC (Hulk 6 86; Farías 10pen 39) Beto; Fernando, Maicon, Coelho; Prediger, Sérgio Oliveira, Valeri, Mariano González (Alex 70); Cristián Rodríguez (Ricardo Dias 61), Hulk, Ernesto Farías (Yero 46). • Fernando, Mariano González and Hulk were the only survivors from the side that beat SC Olhanense 3-0 on 4 October. None of the other eight were even among the substitutes for the Portuguese Cup third round tie. • Beto, Maicon, Nuno André Coelho, Sebastián Prediger and Sérgio Oliveira all made their Porto debuts, as did second-half substitutes Alex, Ricardo Dias and Kalidou Yero. Diego Valeri started for the first time after five substitute appearances this term. • It is the third successive season that Porto have beaten Sertanense 4-0 in the cup. As in their past two meetings, Ernesto Farías scored twice against the third division outfit. • At 17 years, four months and 15 days Sérgio Oliveira became the youngest player to feature for Porto, surpassing club legend Fernando Gomes (17 years, nine months and 26 days). • Although only third in the Liga, Jesualdo Ferreira's men are five points better off than at this stage last season. • Summer signing Falcao struck twice as Porto beat Olhanense, his goals sandwiching Bruno Alves's effort on half-time. • It was the first time Falcao had scored more than once in a game since 22 June 2008 when CA River Plate beat CA Banfield 3-2. He struck 25 goals in 55 outings for River Plate, Porto and Colombia between those two-goal hauls. • Four goals came in Porto's first four league matches this season as Falcao surpassed the achievements of Domingos (1995/96) and Benni McCarthy (2003/04), who both struck in each of their opening three games – although neither were in their first season at the club. • The 1-0 loss to SC Braga on 19 September was Porto's first Liga defeat since 1 November 2008, a run of 27 matches including 21 wins. They have won all four of their matches on all fronts since. The loss condemned Uruguay to fifth in the South American standings so their World Cup bid hinges on a two-legged play-off against Costa Rica next month. Portugal booked a place in Europe's play-offs, but Colombia are out. Miscellaneous • On 9 October, Porto signed an agreement with the Pedro Pauleta Foundation, the former Portuguese international's Sao Miguel-based academy in the Azores. UEFA Champions League statistics • APOEL are one of four teams who are yet to score in this season's group stage. Latest domestic information • There were no fixtures in Cyprus at the weekend. • APOEL have played once since Matchday 2, coming from behind to claim a 2-1 win at Ermis Aradippou FC on 5 October. Andreas Papathanasiou scored his first goal of the season (74) against his former club and then helped tee up Chrysostomos Michail's winner (82). • With the top four all drawing, APOEL closed to within three points of the Division A summit. Three games into the season, the gap to leaders AC Omonia was seven points. • Michail is making a habit of scoring important goals this season. His last-minute penalty salvaged a 1-1 draw at Enosis Neon Paralimni FC on 20 September and it was Michail's two goals against FC København that earned APOEL's group-stage place. • APOEL have lost four matches in all competitions this season, as many as they suffered in the whole of last term.
