In 1925, also, at the request of one of the companies engaged in packing salmon in the Port Moller district, along the northern shore of the Alaska Penin sula, the work done there in 1922 was repeated. The results of these experiments form the basis for the following report. -

Steen, Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game, King Salmon, Alaska '" Abstract: an experimental trophy management program was initiated on the Alaska Peninsula in 1976 with the imple mentation of a regulation requiring that all harvested bull moose (AZaes aZaes gigas) have antlers with at least a 50 inch spread. The regulation was designed to protect bulls under 5 years of age, to test the capability of hunters to comply with minimum size requirements, and to determine the potential for maintaining trophy class bulls in the population through this approach. The first two objectives have been accomplished. Nearly 70 - percent of the harvested bulls have been 5 or more years old and only 4 percent of the bulls taken were illegal. Adequate survey data are not available to determine current proportions of trophy bulls in the herd. In view of the declining nature of the population and increasing frequency - of 5 year olds in the kill, however, it seems likely that current harvests may be curtailing recruitment beyond age 5. Although this may not further affect average trophy size, availability of trophy class animals could eventually be - limited to the size of the 5 year old cohort. The moose population of the central Alaska Peninsula, Game Management - Unit 9E, appears to have established via i11111igration southwest from the Naknek River drainage in the early 1930's (Faro 1969). -

Alaska Range
Alaska Range Introduction The heavily glacierized Alaska Range consists of a number of adjacent and discrete mountain ranges that extend in an arc more than 750 km long (figs. 1, 381). From east to west, named ranges include the Nutzotin, Mentas- ta, Amphitheater, Clearwater, Tokosha, Kichatna, Teocalli, Tordrillo, Terra Cotta, and Revelation Mountains. This arcuate mountain massif spans the area from the White River, just east of the Canadian Border, to Merrill Pass on the western side of Cook Inlet southwest of Anchorage. The study centers on the ancient societies of the Alutiiq, Yup’ik and a part of the Inupiat, communities that share a series of com- mon features, and sees their festive and ceremonial activities as components of the strategies implemented to maintain control over social reproduction. This review of the historical and ethnographic sources identifies the authors and the studies that provide the most pertinent data on the subject. Key words: Ethnohistory, social reproduction, musical behaviors, Alaska Eskimo. La investigación se centra sobre las antiguas sociedades de los alutiiq, yup’ik y parte de los inupiat, comunidades que tienen una serie de rasgos comunes y contemplan sus actividades festivas y ceremoniales como parte de estrategias para mantener el control sobre la reproducción social. Esta revisión de fuentes históricas y etnográficas identifica a los autores y a los estudios que proporcionan los datos más significativos sobre el tema. -

Box 277 King Salmon, Alaska 99613 May 1994 SUMMARY STATEMENT The Alaska Peninsula and Becharof National Wildlife Refuges Fishery Management Plan (Plan) provides the management direction necessary to ensure conservation of fishery resources and habitat. In addition, the Plan provides for continued use of fishery resources by subsistence, commercial, and recreational users consistent with the purposes for which the Alaska Peninsula and Becharof refuges (Complex) were established and are managed. The Complex's biological and physical environment is described and fishery resources, human use, management history, and major issues and concerns are discussed. This information was obtained from the Refuge Comprehensive Conservation Plans, a literature search, and discussions with Alaska Department of Fish and Game personnel. Objectives and tasks are developed to address the issues and concerns. Federal tasks are assigned priorities and costs for each year of continuation. The Plan encompasses a five year period, at which time it will be revised. Major issues and concerns identified include the following: competition between user groups; incomplete salmon escapement data bases to refine management of the Complex fish populations; and inadequate fishery law enforcement. In some cases, concerns were identified because of the perception that they would develop into serious problems if current levels of use or consumption were allowed to continue or expand. -

Preparatory classes ground students in an understanding of Alaska’s history, physical landscape, Native American heritage, and current natural resource base. The environmental and economic impacts of such activities as commercial fishing, logging, mining, and tourism serve as a central theme for the course. The two week May Term itinerary includes cultural activities in Sitka, Fairbanks and Anchorage involving Tlingit, Athabascan, and other Alaskan Native groups, plus environmental field investigations of Kenai Fiords National Park, Prince William Sound, the historic Yukon mining region, and Mendenhall Glacier. NCEP Program Goals 1. Knowledge: Students will understand the historic, cultural, economic and political forces shaping contemporary society and articulate their own place in the world; understand the connections between power, privilege and acquisition of knowledge both locally and globally; understand how language frames our thinking and perspectives; and/or understand the interconnection and interdependence of global systems. 2. Attitudes: Students will develop cultural self-awareness; develop appreciation for and interest in learning about other cultures; recognize the value of seeing the world through the eyes of others; and/or recognize the value of active citizenship and individual responsibility both within and beyond U.S. borders.
