We recommend this “In Memoriam” piece to readers who have not already seen it: we did not write it but would have been pleased and proud to do so, and, accordingly, feel that we need not and should not offer another version of its contents here. This brief introduction will therefore merely explain why we wanted to prepare this special issue of the journal in Eleanor’s honour. Apart from all of her manifold accomplishments, Eleanor was a most extraordinary person to have as a colleague and friend. She exemplified the admirable goal of taking Cognitive Neuropsychology 100 one’s work, but not oneself, with great seriousness. We believe and indeed hope that Eleanor enjoyed her academic successes as much as any of us do; but she never seemed preoccupied with her own success or indeed with herself at all. The full force of her intellect was directed to advancing the ‘career’ of cognitive neuropsychology, not her own career—and, by the way, anyone who was lucky enough to work with her, or even to have a research-related discussion with her, will know how intense her intellectual force and focus could be. © 2004 Psychology Press Ltd http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/pp/02643294.html DOI: 10.1080/02643290342000636 Probably no human behaviour, and certainly not any behaviour as complex and long- lasting as a working life devoted to research, is singly or simply motivated. We nevertheless feel that, to the extent that it could be said of any researcher in our discipline, it would be appropriate to say of Eleanor Saffran that she was motivated almost purely by a drive to understand cognitive abilities and their neural implementation, and to help fellow researchers to do likewise. We were exceedingly lucky to have her in our field and in our lives. Eleanor knew that we were preparing this special issue in her honour. Naturally we had hoped to complete it in time for her to see it, and were bitterly disappointed that the rapid progress of her illness thwarted this goal. We only hope that she would have been as pleased by the outcome and the honour as we were pleased to do it for her.
