SCIENCE FAIR

DEADLINES ALL SCIENCE FAIR REGISTRATIONS MUST BE IN BY MARCH 29—NO LATER THE FORM ALSO CONTAINS THE OPPORTUNITY TO DESIGN A LOGO FOR T-SHIRTS AROUND OUR SCIENCE FAIR THEME “ SCIENCE ROCKS”. ALL CHILDREN CAN DO THIS EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT PARTICIPATING IN THE SF. HONORABLE MENTION DESIGNS WILL BECOME POSTERS. THAT DESIGN MUST BE IN BY MARCH 29.

MAY 12, 2017 IS THE SCIENCE FAIR

Kids can work with a friend or sibling if they wish on a SF project One design will be picked for the T-shirts which all registered participants in the SF will receive. We are seeking monetary sponsors at this date to support the purchase of T- shirts. LOOKING FOR IDEAS?- Students have been told to find idea sources on the web. Google “science fair projects” and you will come up with many ideas. Also on the form, there are many science topic suggestions that are listed to help you and your student to decide. MOM AND DAD SUPPORT IS A MUST: the SF is one of those things that will take parental supervision and/or involvement. This is a good thing!!! We suggest that parents start exploring with their child fun ideas to do. We hope that all parents would get involved. Many (80 or more) students from this building from all grades will be in this SF. We reminded our students that at the time of registration, they do NOT have to have an idea set in concrete. They do have time to explore and work on the idea. Our Spring Break can be a great time to start work on an idea. Students were reminded that if their idea is something that SOLUTION TO CHESS 1. Rxf3+! means something is grown, or needs time to develop, they 2. ... Kg4 need to take that into consideration. 3. 1... Kxf3 stalemate! I NEED HELP!!!!!! We will be providing some help time for students with the help of UWEC students and others. That will be announced in the during week of March 27.

What will be happening before the Science Fair? APRIL: The Mighty Science Quiz (3- 4 Wednesdays in April) where kids have been given a topic and information through this newsletter including links to videos about the topic. All they have to do is watch and read and then answer some questions each Wednesday about that weeks topic and they can win a prize for correctly answering the quiz. They win a prize for correct answers. DEADLINE MARCH 29: T-Shirt and Poster design contest (already explained above) Predictable Science contest (late April or early May for one week. Kids can pick up the trivia questions and find the answers in the library or online and if they are correct, they win a prize). APRIL: People in science- we hope to share a few times a week, names and faces of people from the past who influenced science or scientific discovery and ones who currently are making discoveries in many areas of the world of science. This will be shared in the classroom. MAY 3: Dress like a scientist! More information to come Check in on progress: The science fair committee will be checking in on kids in April to see how they are progressing and what help they may need NOW AVAILABLE: TRI-FOLD BOARDS: Tri-fold display boards will be available in beginning on beginning March 27 for $1. HELP TIME: Happening in April there will be some time for students to get free assistance on their project from experienced scientists. We will announce times and dates soon. Keep watching.

If you have questions or would like to help with some aspect of the Fair, please contact me— Laurie Erdman at [email protected] or call 715-852-4107

YOU AND YOUR CHILD DON’T WANT TO MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY

---- The Chemistry Club from UWEC Was here to demonstrate SCIENCE!

The Chemistry Club from UWEC along with their professor, demonstrated many experiments, including the use of liquid Nitrogen, Helium and Hydrogen balloons exploding and the properties of pressure, cold and dry ice. In this picture, the kids dipped a live flower in a bucket of dry ice and then saw how brittle it became. There were a lot of ooos and ahhhhs and fun at the Chemistry demonstration. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ CLUB INVENTION STARTS MONDAY, MARCH 27: We had an overwhleming response to the next session of club invention. Head Lice in Schools

• Head lice can be a nuisance, but they have not been shown to spread disease. • Personal hygiene or cleanliness in the home or school has nothing to do with getting head lice. • Transmission of head lice usually occurs through direct contact with the head of another infested individual. • Lice cannot hop or fly; they crawl. Nits (eggs) are attached to the hair shaft with a glue-like substance and are very unlikely to be transferred successfully to other people. In-school transmission is considered to be rare. • When live head lice are found on a student, the parent/guardian will be notified by phone. The student will remain in the classroom, and a letter with treatment information will be sent home with the student at the end of the day. • When nits (eggs) are found on a student, the student will remain in the classroom, and a letter with treatment information will be sent home with the student at the end of the day. • Parents are asked to treat for head lice and remove all nits (eggs) before sending their child back to school. Most lice treatments do not kill nits, so it is important to remove all nits to prevent them from hatching into live lice. • Treatment for lice is not recommended unless the child actually has lice. Parents are encouraged to make checking for head lice a part of routine hygiene, as lice is present in the community at all times of the year. • Lice cases are tracked, and letters to parents notifying them of lice in the classroom will be sent out on an as-needed basis as determined by the school nurse and administrator. • ECASD procedures for head lice management are based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Association of School Nurses, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, and the ECASD Medical Advisor.

Contact your child’s school nurse with questions.
