OUR ETERNAL HIGH PRIEST – HEBREWS 7:19-28 January 11 & 12, 2020

REVIEW: Jesus is the final High Priest and He holds His priesthood for eternity. :19-21

7:1-4. Here is Jesus’ eternal priesthood as seen in the “type/shadow” of .

One problem was that perfection could not come through sinful men – only Jesus could bring what God had promised and Melchizedek is a type of this.

• A better priest (perfect and holy) for eternity = a better hope for God’s people/FOREVER.

Jesus is the answer to our dilemma of inward corruption. There is nothing we can do of ourselves to obtain forgiveness and righteousness. But in Jesus we find not only forgiveness, but empowerment to live differently. Yes, we fight indwelling sin but now we have a new nature – “” – born from above and the lives in us.

HEBREWS 7:11-22. Here is perfection of Christ as both King and Priest. He is THE bearer of righteousness and peace, and He reigns forever.

• Hebrews calls this PERFECTION – 7:11, 19.

MEMORY VERSE: Hebrews 7:25

TEXT: Hebrews 7:19-28. What a difference between the priests and our High Priest, Jesus. Note the nature of His ordination to ministry – 7:20-22. AN OATH FROM GOD?! God did not give the oath because He needed it; but to give us ASSURANCE and HOPE that He will do exactly as He has promised. 6:16-18

• Verse 22, the Greek word for “guarantee” or “surety” only appears in Hebrews 7:22. It means “one who stands for security.” The guarantor offered everything he had including himself as security to ensure what was promised.

7:23-25. Therefore (verse 25) links Jesus’ eternal priesthood and His intercession. He is active in praying for us. Intercession is one means by which Jesus saves us, gaining for us complete divine favor and everything needed for our salvation.

JESUS IS SUFFICIENT AS OUR INTERCESSOR … PERIOD. Here is the error of seeing Mary and the as interceding for us. I John 2:1-2

This in no way implies that the Father is hostile toward His saints. Remember that this GREAT SALVATION is from Him and through our Lord Jesus. John 3:16

If you belong to Christ Jesus, He will see that you are carried “all the way home.”

• Think of Peter’s failure – denied the Lord 3X. What kept Peter? Luke 22:31-32

Here is what sets apart. Every false religion relies on the performance or power of man. They say salvation lies in your efforts, the “scales of God” in heaven.

• BUT the shows a living Savior, who has put our sin away FOREVER - - - and gives us His Holy Spirit.

CONCLUSION. Hebrews 7:26-28. Reigning forever in heaven, Jesus assures our salvation, always interceding for us with the Father. Here is the apex or high point of our text: He is able to save forever those who draw near to God through Him. Such a High Priest perfectly meets our need both in His Person and in His Work.

• “All have sinned” is how Romans 3:23 says it, but THANK GOD for Romans 3:24-26.

Look at Hebrews 7:26 – five things about Jesus in this one verse:

1. He is holy. 2. He is blameless. 3. He is undefiled (pure). This applies both to Him being the Lamb and the High Priest. 4. He is separated from sinners. 5. He is exalted above the heavens. The point is that Jesus is higher than every other heavenly being, seated at the right hand of God with authority and power forever, interceding for us.

Remember Genesis 22:1-14? Verse 7 – Where is the lamb? ’s question could be the theme for the Old Testament along with ’s reply, the Lord will provide.

• THE LORD HAS PROVIDED – Romans 3:21-26

Only Jesus is qualified to serve in this capacity. Hebrews 7:25. Because of who He is and what He has accomplished, Jesus is able to save forever those who come to God through Him.

7:26-28. The High Priest’s clothing signified his work before God and REPRESENTED what Jesus would accomplish and forever stand in that role as our Eternal High Priest.

• Yet every High Priest (except Jesus) was a sinner. Before the sin offering could be made for the people, the priest had to offer his own sin offering.

Where is the priest? Jesus is no temporary fill-in - - His priesthood is eternal/forever.

Jesus Christ is the One to whom all the priests beforehand pointed. In Him ALONE is salvation.
