  • Interrogating British Residential Segregation in Nigeria, 1899-1919
UCLA Ufahamu: A Journal of African Studies Title Space and Colonial Alterity: Interrogating British Residential Segregation in Nigeria, 1899-1919 Permalink https://escholarship.org/uc/item/98q1c1d1 Journal Ufahamu: A Journal of African Studies, 41(2) ISSN 0041-5715 Author Alozie, Bright Publication Date 2020 DOI 10.5070/F7412046832 Peer reviewed eScholarship.org Powered by the California Digital Library University of California PART I Essays Space and Colonial Alterity: Interrogating British Residential Segregation in Nigeria, 1899-1919 Bright Alozie Abstract The policy of segregation is undoubtedly a resented feature of colo- nial rule in Africa. However, discussions of the residential racial segregation policy of the British colonial administration in Africa invariably focus on “settler colonies” of South, Central, and East Africa. British colonial West Africa hardly features in such dis- cussions since it is widely believed that these areas, which had no large-scale European settler populations, had no experience relevant to any meaningful discussion of multi-racial colonial relationships. Some studies even deny the existence of racially segregated areas in places other than the settler colonies. Despite evidence that residen- tial racial segregation formed one of the principles that facilitated the implementation of British colonial policy in Nigeria, the Nige- rian experience has not been given a fully coherent treatment. This paper examines Nigeria’s experience of officially directed residen- tial segregation. It argues that while residential segregation policies were justified along policies related to health, sanitation, and dis- ease prevention, the motive also derived from the demonstration of racial supremacy and civilization, which was the ideological justi- fication for empires in Africa.

The Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria is situated on the northern shores of the Gulf of Guinea. It is bounded on the west and north by French territory and on the east by the former German Colony of the* Cameroons. Great Britain has recently received a mandate over a small portion of the Cameroons (31,150 square miles) which, for purposes of administration, has been placed under the Nigerian Government. The remainder of the Cameroons is administered by the French under a mandate, so, for all practical purposes, all the land frontiers of Nigeria march with French territory. ,.. 2. The area of Nigeria, induding the mandated area of the Cameroons, is approximately 367,928 square miles (Southern Provinces and Colony 91;894 square miles ; Northern Provinces 276,034 square miles), and it is thus larger than any British Dependency other than Tanganyika, India, and the self-governing Dominions. It is more than three times the size of the United Kingdom. Along the entire coast-line runs a belt, from 10 to 60 miles in width, of dense mangrqye forest and swamp intersected by the branches of the Niger defta, and other rivers, which are connected one with another by innumerable creeks, the whole constituting a continuous inland waterway from beyond the western boundary of Nigeria almost to the Cameroons.

  • 517 Dwelling Density Variability Across
Ethiopian Journal of Environmental Studies and Management Vol. 6 No.5 2013 DWELLING DENSITY VARIABILITY ACROSS GOVERNMENT-BUILT MULTIFAMILY APARTMENTS IN LAGOS ADEBAYO, A. K. and *IWEKA, A.C.O. http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/ejesm.v6i5.9 Received 10th May 2013; accepted 15th August 2013 Abstract This study examined the variability of dwelling density across different classifications of multifamily apartments built by Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) in Lagos, Nigeria. Six design prototypes used to build several multifamily apartments in four estates were purposively selected as case study. The focus was on comparing how the interior spaces in the six multifamily prototype apartments were occupied during habitation. Overall population of apartments studied was 7,764 representing the total number of apartments in the four purposively selected estates. A sample of 7.5% (582) was chosen using stratification and systematic random techniques. A survey research technique was adopted to obtain responses to pre-tested questionnaires regarding the demographic data of occupants. Data analysis was done by applying adult-equivalent number of occupants based on Canadian National Occupancy Standards (CNOS) and the Equivalized Crowding Index (ECI). The intensity of dwelling density during habitation across various apartment classifications was presented in two parts namely single measure and group measure. The results obtained using the group measure show that households containing three to five persons were the most dominant in all apartment types. The result also shows that there was no substantial disparity in dwelling density across different apartment classifications when analyzed using single measure approach. This finding was supported by the results of a chi-square test which found that, at 95% confidence level, apartment type had no significant effect on dwelling density in LSDPC’s multifamily apartments.

  • Attitude of Audience Members to Nollywood Films ENO AKPABIO University of Botswana, Botswana
Nordic Journal of African Studies 16(1): 90–100 (2007) Attitude of Audience Members to Nollywood Films ENO AKPABIO University of Botswana, Botswana ABSTRACT Critics and the regulatory authority – National Film and Video Censors Board – have severely criticized Nigerian home video films for placing too much emphasis on occultism, blood, gore and appeals to the lowest common denominator. The overall objective of this study was to find out if the views of audience members tallies with or is at variance with those expressed by the critics and experts. The study employed multi-stage cluster sampling and one thousand four hundred and forty copies of the study questionnaire were given out to respondents. The study found out that audience members have a favourable attitude to Nigerian home video films in spite of the emphasis on negative themes. Keywords: Nollywood, home videos, negative themes, film, audience, attitude INTRODUCTION The Nigerian audiences’ first experience in film screening was in 1903 at the Glover Memorial Hall, and enthralled the audience was! (Uchegbu 1992: 48). Even though film was introduced by a European merchant, it took the combined efforts of the colonial administration and the church to sustain the industry (Ekwuazi 1987: 1). The content of such films can be easily discerned. The British colonialist used it for their “civilizing” mission as well as to indicate the blessedness of being colonized. The church, as their involvement in education and the media industry has shown, used films for spreading the gospel. However, the Nigerian film has grown in leaps and bounds on all indicators. But it was not always so.
