HONORS IN BERLIN, SPRING BREAK 2017

Become an agent of memory by learning about the history COURSES & INSTRUCTORS of the Holocaust and exploring memorials to that atrocity with an eight day program in Berlin, Germany. This ITDS 1145H (3 HRS) interdisciplinary program is ideal for Honors students who Comparative Arts Dr. Mariko Izumi wish to complete core or upper-division courses toward their Honors degree. How can we imagine ourselves as agents of HIST course Dr. Neal McCrillis memory, self-reflexively taking on the responsibility for keeping alive the memories and meaning of that event? HONS 3555 (3 HRS) Focused on Holocaust history and memorials, this interdis- Great Conversations ciplinary program invites you to engage in multiple genres Honors eligibility & junior status of Holocaust representation, including film, photography, Dr. Mariko Izumi & memoir, fiction, poetry, art, and music. While in Germany, Dr. Neal McCrillis you will have the opportunity to visit important memorials, such as the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, as well as CONTACT take a day trip to visit the site of the Wannsee Conference. By visiting key sites in and around the capital of the former Nazi state and the current Federal Republic, students will investigate one of the most challenging historical events of the last century: the Holocaust or Nazi genocide during 1941-1945. Participants will also explore how the Holocaust or Shoah is remembered and memorialized today. Some of the field trips include Sachsenhausen concentration camp, the Jewish Museum of Berlin, the Topography of Terror (former and SS headquarters), and the infamous Wannsee Conference site.

All students must select one course from each of the options below. Option 1: HONS 3555 or HIST 3555H Option 2: COMM 1110H or ITDS 1145H Alternative courses may available upon request

Student will have a free day and can possibly visit the following places:

 The 18th century royal palace of Charlottenburg & its “Amber Room”  Hamburger Bahnhof Contemporary Art Museum   Frederick the Great's Palace  Cecilienhof Palace where Churchill, Stalin and Truman met for the Potsdam Conference,  The Renaissance city of Leipzig
