Abstract Introduction Salinity and drought are the most important environmental stress conditions reducing crop yields worldwide and limiting the distribution of wild plants in nature. Soil salinity, especially secondary salinity caused by anthropogenic practices, such as prolonged irrigation, lead to substantial agricultural yield losses, especially in arid and semiarid regions. Drought, caused by reduced water content in the soil, occurs due to disorders in nature´s water cycle, chiefly when evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation in a certain area, to the point where soil water reserves can no longer support plant growth. Drought and salt stress trigger the activation of a series of basic stress mechanisms that includes among others, the control of ion transport, exclusion and compartmentalization, as well as the accumulation of compatible solutes (‘osmolytes’), and the activation of antioxidant systems. These mechanisms are conserved in all plants, stress tolerant and sensitive alike, and don’t necessarily confer tolerance. To decipher those mechanisms and have a better understanding on the contribution of different stress responses to the stress tolerance of a given species, we have carried out comparative studies on the responses to drought and salinity in a number of genetically related taxa with different tolerance potentials. Methodology The work concentrated on studying the responses to salt and drought stress in genetically related plants with different tolerance to abiotic stress. The studied taxa included salt-tolerant (halophytes) and salt-sensitive (glycophytes) wild species of two i different genera: Juncus (monocotyledonous) and Plantago (dicotyledonous), as well as plants of crop species: Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme (cherry tomatoes) and different Phaseolus cultivars, one of P. coccineus and three of P. vulgaris. The experimental approach was mostly based on i) establishing the relative tolerance to water and salt stress in the studied species from their distribution in nature (in the case of wild species) and through the relative inhibition of growth in the presence of stress, and ii) correlating changes in the levels of biochemical ‘stress markers’ associated to specific response pathways (ion transport, osmolyte accumulation…) upon stress treatments, with the already established relative tolerance to stress. This strategy proved to be appropriate to distinguish mere general responses to stress from those mechanisms relevant for stress tolerance of the investigated species and cultivars. The work also sheds light on other aspects affected by salt stress, specifically regarding germination and reproductive success or anatomical changes in salt-stressed plants. The expression patterns of the gene NHX1, encoding a vacuolar Na+/H+ antiporter were also studied in the Plantago taxa, as a first step in the full characterisation of this ion transporter, that appears to play an important role in the mechanisms of salt tolerance in this genus. Results and discussion Through the results attained from this work, we have been able to establish which general stress responses are relevant for tolerance in the investigated species or cultivars, and which are not. Thus, we provide clear evidence that, although all plants seem to activate the same mechanisms of defense in response to abiotic stress, their relative contribution to stress tolerance differs widely in different genera and species. ii Moreover, in general, the relative tolerance of the investigated species and cultivars were the same, when referring to salt stress and to water stress, and the same mechanisms – except some related to ion transport and homeostasis – were relevant for tolerance to both stresses. In the studied Phaseolus cultivars, P. vulgaris cv. 'Maxidor' showed the smallest growth inhibition under salt and water stress conditions, and therefore was defined as the most tolerant. 'Maxidor' accumulated lower levels of toxic ions and proline, and recorded higher levels of myo-inositol than the other cultivars. We concluded that blocking ion transport from the roots to the leaves and myo-inositol accumulation, were the mechanisms most relevant for stress tolerance in Phaseolus. Proline is a reliable stress biomarker in this genus, indicating the degree of stress affecting the plants, but is not directly involved in tolerance mechanisms. In the studied Plantago species it was found that the more tolerant taxa transported Na+ and Cl- to the leaves more efficiently than the most sensitive P. major, and tended to accumulate large amounts of proline, albeit only under extreme stress conditions; these responses appear to be the most relevant for tolerance in Plantago. I Toxic ions transported to the leaves are presumably accumulated in vacuoles, which gave incentive to isolating, sequencing and studying the expression of the Na+/H+ vacuolar antiporter gene NHX1 in the studied species. Upon short-term treatments with high NaCl concentrations, the more tolerant species showed higher salt-induced expression of the aforementioned gene, supporting the contribution of the NHX1 antiporter to salt tolerance in Plantago. Meanwhile, the tolerant Juncus species were able to partly inhibit ion transport from the roots to the plants aerial parts and recorded a much larger increment (about 60- fold over the controls) in proline contents, as compared to the stress-sensitive congener. iii Therefore, blocking accumulation of toxic ions and inducing accumulation of proline in the culms appear to be the most important mechanisms of tolerance in Juncus.

The material collected during OPTIMA’s Iter Mediterraneum VII to the Peloponnese in 1995 has been revised. It comprises 2708 gatherings, each with 0 to 31 duplicates, collected in 53 numbered localities. The number of taxa (species or subspecies) represented is 1078. As many of the areas visited had been poorly explored before, a dozen of the taxa collected turned out to not to have been previously described, of which 9 (7 species, 2 subspecies) are described and named here (three more were published independently in the intervening years). They belong to the genera Allium, Asperula, Ballota, Klasea, Lolium, Minuartia, Nepeta, Oenanthe, and Trifolium. New combinations at the rank of subspecies (3) and variety (2) are also published. One of the species (Euphorbia aulacosperma) is first recorded for Europe, and several are new for the Peloponnese or had their known range of distribution significantly expanded. Critical notes draw attention to these cases and to taxonomic problems yet to be solved. An overview of the 11 Itinera Mediterranea that have taken place so far is presented, summarising their main results. [email protected] Abstract: The present study was carried out during 2010 to 2011 to determine the important plants of in Jarjar oma in Al- Jabal Al- Akhdar-Libya, which includes about 179 species belonging to 51 families and 144 genera. They are represented by 75 perennial, 101 annual and 3 biennial species. Most characteristic families are Asteraceae containing 28 species, the dominance of Asteraceae indicates the range deterioration and dominance of unpalatable species. Fabaceae represented by 22 species, Poaceae including 18 species, Asparagaceae by 7 species, Brassicaceae by 6 species, Caryophyllaceae by 6 species, Euphorbiaceae by 6 species saline and rocky. Apiaceae, Lamiaceae and Polygonaceae including 5 species. Noticed that 56.2 % of species was annuals and 42.1 % was perennials and 1.7 % was biennials. Whereas autumn and summer increase perennials to reach 100 % more than spring and winter wherein increase annuals species to attain 55 %, to display disappear biennial in autumn and summer seasons in all habitat except rocky habitat in autumn. Out of the surveyed, Kinds of Forbs gave 109 species followed shrubs by 38 species, Grass 26 species, Trees 6 species. Of the most dominant species was broad-leaved (Forbs) plant species found in the region. According to palatability 107 species were palatable and 72 species were unpalatable. For annuals, 61 species were palatable and 40 species were unpalatable, while perennial, 44 species were palatable and 31 species were unpalatable.

Since then there has been a substantial realignment of family and generic boundaries and the discovery of many new species. The lack of an update or revision since 1989 means that the Libyan Flora is now out of date and requires a reassessment using modern approaches. Here we report initial efforts to provide an updated checklist covering 43 families out of the 150 in the published flora of Libya, including 138 genera and 411 species. Updating the circumscription of taxa to follow current classification results in 11 families (Coridaceae, Guttiferae, Leonticaceae, Theligonaceae, Tiliaceae, Sterculiaceae, Bombacaeae, Sparganiaceae, Globulariaceae, Asclepiadaceae and Illecebraceae) being included in other generally broader and less morphologically well-defined families (APG-IV, 2016). As a consequence, six new families: Hypericaceae, Adoxaceae, Lophiocarpaceae, Limeaceae, Gisekiaceae and Cleomaceae are now included in the Libyan Flora.

Notes on the flora and vegetation of some coastal ecosystems of Sterea Ellas and eastern conti- nental Greece (Greece). Lazaroa 33: 65-99 (2012). Vegetation of four coastal ecosystems of eastern continental Greece and of Sterea Ellas, including dune, marshland, wet meadow, reed bed and aquatic habitats, was studied in several years. The flora of the investigated regions consists of 217 taxa belonging to 42 families and 135 genera, most of which are reported for the first time. The majority of taxa are Therophytes (101 taxa, 46%); Hemicryptophytes and Geophytes are also well represented in the life form spectrum. From a chorological point of view the Mediterranean element (123 taxa, 57%) outweight the rest while the most diverse group of widespread taxa occupies the second place (83 taxa, 38%). The macrophytic vegetation was analysed following the Braun-Blanquet method. Twenty one plant communities were found belonging to twelve alliances, ten orders and eight phytosociological classes. The vegetation units distinguished are described, documented in form of phytosociological tables, and compared with similar communities from other Mediterranean countries. According to directive 92/43/EU, nine habitat types were delimited through the assessment of the dominant vegetation types. Keywords: flora, vegetation, coastal ecosystems, habitat types, Greece. In 2014 we had 18 field meetings, 10 of them were fully or partially coastal. This fitted in with Natural England undertaking a review of the botanical interest of the Severn Estuary and the SRPG helped to gather records to contribute to this project. We also had meetings to find and monitor the rare and scarce species and general recording meetings, trying to fill in some of the under-recorded areas of the two vice-counties (VC5 South Somerset & VC6 North Somerset). We are keen to encourage members to either ‘adopt’ a species or a suite of species (especially those in our Rare Plant Register) or record in their chosen area, whether it is a patch, Parish or tetrad, as we need good coverage of the county. Members of the SRPG currently record at a scale of monad (1km square) level or finer. Six, eight or ten figure grid references are routinely recorded for rarer species. The Mapping program MapMate is used by the Somerset Vice-County Recorders to store, analyse and share data, all records being passed to the BSBI (Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland).

Among the many ecosystem services 12 13 provided, the biodiversity of constructed wetlands has received less attention. 14 The EcoSistema Filtro (ESF) of the Molentargius-Saline Regional Natural Park is a constructed 15 16 wetland situated in Sardinia (Italy), built to filter treated wastewater, increase habitat diversity and 17 18 10 enhance local biodiversity. A floristic survey has been carried out yearly one year after the 19 20 construction of the artificial ecosystem in 2004, observing the modification of the vascular flora 21 22 composition in time. The flora of the ESF accounted for 54% of the whole Regional Park’s flora; 23 alien species amount to 12%, taxa of conservation concern are 6%. Comparing the data in the years, 24 25 except for the biennium 2006/2007, we observed a continuous increase of species richness, together 26 27 15 with an increase of endemics, species of conservation concern and alien species too. Once the 28 29 endemics appeared, they remained part of the flora, showing a good persistence in the artificial 30 31 wetland.

In this paper, a complete and updated checklist of the vascular flora of Sierra Nevada mountain range (SE Spain), a recognized hotspot for plant diversity in the Mediterranean basin, is presented. It includes 2,353 taxa, 359 more than in the previous checklist (an increase of 15.25%). Also, data are shown on composition (in terms of families, number of hybrids, native/alien species, endemics, etc.) and threat status according to the IUCN. The result is a complete and updated checklist flora of this recognised biodiversity Mediterranean hotspot. Keywords: Baetic Mountains, Endemics, Iberian Peninsula, Plant Biodiversity Hotspot, Threatened flora, Vascular Plants Introduction The floristic inventory of a given area is the very first basis, a prerequisite, and a starting point for assessing plant conservation, management, and ecological restoration, providing information on the need for additional surveys or data collections, as well as establishing the starting point for more detailed studies (Kier et al. 2005). It aids in identifying and correctly naming species, essential resources for biodiversity estimates and biogeographic studies. Furthermore, an accurate checklist of species fulfils important social functions, since the richness value is often the simplest and the most direct way of presenting the concept of biodiversity to the society in general.
