Introduction 1.1 In response to requests from local residents, in August 2018 we (Somerset Wildlife Crime and Hounds Off) began a focused campaign to shine a light on modern day deer hunting with dogs. (1) 1.2 Throughout the 2018/19 hunting season the Quantock Stag Hounds (QSH) chased red deer with pairs of dogs plus the eyes, ears, binoculars, mobile phones and two-way radios of their supporters on horseback, motorbikes, quadbikes, four-wheel drives and on foot. 1.3 Deer were killed by running them to exhaustion and then shooting from close range. -

Towards Resolving Lamiales Relationships

BMC Evolutionary Biology 2010, 10:352 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2148/10/352 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Towards resolving Lamiales relationships: insights from rapidly evolving chloroplast sequences Bastian Schäferhoff1*, Andreas Fleischmann2, Eberhard Fischer3, Dirk C Albach4, Thomas Borsch5, Günther Heubl2, Kai F Müller1 Abstract Background: In the large angiosperm order Lamiales, a diverse array of highly specialized life strategies such as carnivory, parasitism, epiphytism, and desiccation tolerance occur, and some lineages possess drastically accelerated DNA substitutional rates or miniaturized genomes. However, understanding the evolution of these phenomena in the order, and clarifying borders of and relationships among lamialean families, has been hindered by largely unresolved trees in the past. Results: Our analysis of the rapidly evolving trnK/matK, trnL-F and rps16 chloroplast regions enabled us to infer more precise phylogenetic hypotheses for the Lamiales. Relationships among the nine first-branching families in the Lamiales tree are now resolved with very strong support. Subsequent to Plocospermataceae, a clade consisting of Carlemanniaceae plus Oleaceae branches, followed by Tetrachondraceae and a newly inferred clade composed of Gesneriaceae plus Calceolariaceae, which is also supported by morphological characters. Plantaginaceae (incl. Gratioleae) and Scrophulariaceae are well separated in the backbone grade; Lamiaceae and Verbenaceae appear in distant clades, while the recently described Linderniaceae are confirmed to be monophyletic and in an isolated position. Conclusions: Confidence about deep nodes of the Lamiales tree is an important step towards understanding the evolutionary diversification of a major clade of flowering plants. The degree of resolution obtained here now provides a first opportunity to discuss the evolution of morphological and biochemical traits in Lamiales. -

Vicar of Buckland Dinham, Member of the British Ornitho- logists' Union, and one of the authors of" The Birds of DevonT WHEN Mr. Cecil Smith published his Birds of Somerset, in 1869, he was able to record but 217 species, to which he subsequently added ten others in a list contributed by him to Vol. xvi of the Transactions of the Somerset Archaaological and Natural History Society (for 1870), thus bringing the total number of birds for Somerset to 227. But even this number appears inadequate to repre- sent the Ornis of so large a county as Somerset, when it is compared with the lists which have been made out for the adjoining counties. Thus for Wiltshire, a county which comes far behind Somerset in geographical importance, as it possesses no coast line, the Rev. A. Smith was able to . C. enumerate 235 species ; in Dorsetshire, Col. Mansel-Pleydell, as was to be expected, had a fuller list, numbering 254 species, to which we are able to add three others, thus bringing the Dorsetshire county birds to a total of 257 ; while for Devon- shire, which has a sea frontage both on the north and south, as many as 300 species can be claimed. Box 221,Reading, Berkshire, RG6 2AS ABSTRACT Morphological descriptions are given of the 14 speciesof Orobanche (Orobanchaceae) recorded in the British Isles, together with separate keys for identifying fresh material and herbarium specimens. Accounts of the history of the speciesare presented together with illustrations and distribution maps. The variation in Orobanche minor is accounted for with the recognition of four varieties. INTRODUcnON ..,,; . The genus Orobanche is renowned as a taxonomically very difficult one. In most casesthis is a result of many of the useful charactersbecoming lost on drying, and the lack of adequate field notes. Plants which are very distinct in the field become reduced to a hideous brown uniformity when pressed. Therefore, herbarium specimens are often incorrectly determined (an average of 5-10% in fact). The loss of characters on drying, considerable intra-specific variation, confusing synonymies, incorrectly cited names and badly described specieswith poor types (often with different specieson the same sheet) have done little to generate interest in the genus. Too many botanists have shown a reluctance to deal with this genusin herbaria, perpetuating the myth that the speciesare impossible to identify once dried. Certainly, Orobanche minor Sm. and its close relatives often cannot be positively determined without descriptive notes made at the time of gathering, but all other species from the British Isles are distinct enough not to need any additional information. It is hoped that this account will stimulate other botanists to study, identify and record members of this fascinating parasitic genus in Britain and Ireland, as well as clear up some errors and confusions made in the past. -

This is one of a series of linked but legally separate reports published by Natural England under section 51 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949, which make proposals to the Secretary of State for improved public access along and to this stretch of coast between Aust to Brean Down. 9.1.2 This report covers length ABD 9 of the stretch, which is the coast between Uphill Beach and Brean Cross Sluice. It makes free-standing statutory proposals for this part of the stretch, and seeks approval for them by the Secretary of State in their own right under section 52 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. 9.1.3 The report explains how we propose to implement the England Coast Path (“the trail”) on this part of the stretch, and details the likely consequences in terms of the wider ‘Coastal Margin’ that will be created if our proposals are approved by the Secretary of State. Our report also sets out: any proposals we think are necessary for restricting or excluding coastal access rights to address particular issues, in line with the powers in the legislation; and any proposed powers for the trail to be capable of being relocated on particular sections (“roll- back”), if this proves necessary in the future because of coastal change. -

This is the sixth annual newsletter we have produced and it seems only a short while since we were considering our first issue.
