  • Epilist 1.0: a Global Checklist of Vascular Epiphytes
Zurich Open Repository and Archive University of Zurich Main Library Strickhofstrasse 39 CH-8057 Zurich www.zora.uzh.ch Year: 2021 EpiList 1.0: a global checklist of vascular epiphytes Zotz, Gerhard ; Weigelt, Patrick ; Kessler, Michael ; Kreft, Holger ; Taylor, Amanda Abstract: Epiphytes make up roughly 10% of all vascular plant species globally and play important functional roles, especially in tropical forests. However, to date, there is no comprehensive list of vas- cular epiphyte species. Here, we present EpiList 1.0, the first global list of vascular epiphytes based on standardized definitions and taxonomy. We include obligate epiphytes, facultative epiphytes, and hemiepiphytes, as the latter share the vulnerable epiphytic stage as juveniles. Based on 978 references, the checklist includes >31,000 species of 79 plant families. Species names were standardized against World Flora Online for seed plants and against the World Ferns database for lycophytes and ferns. In cases of species missing from these databases, we used other databases (mostly World Checklist of Selected Plant Families). For all species, author names and IDs for World Flora Online entries are provided to facilitate the alignment with other plant databases, and to avoid ambiguities. EpiList 1.0 will be a rich source for synthetic studies in ecology, biogeography, and evolutionary biology as it offers, for the first time, a species‐level overview over all currently known vascular epiphytes. At the same time, the list represents work in progress: species descriptions of epiphytic taxa are ongoing and published life form information in floristic inventories and trait and distribution databases is often incomplete and sometimes evenwrong.

  • Explosive Local Radiation of the Genus Teagueia (Orchidaceae) in the Upper Pastaza Watershed of Ecuador
Volume 7(1) Explosive Local Radiation of the Genus Teagueia (Orchidaceae) in the Upper Pastaza Watershed of Ecuador. Radiacion Explosivo del Genero Teagueia (Orchidaceae) en la Cuenca Alta del Rio Pastaza, Ecuador. Lou Jost Baños, Tungurahua, Ecuador, Email: [email protected] December 2004 Download at: http://www.lyonia.org/downloadPDF.php?pdfID=2.323.1 Lou Jost 42 Explosive Local Radiation of the Genus Teagueia (Orchidaceae) in the Upper Pastaza Watershed of Ecuador. Abstract In the year 2000 the genus Teagueia Luer (Orchidaceae, subtribe Pleurothallidinae) contained only six species, all epiphytic. Recently we have discovered 26 unusual new terrestrial species of Teagueia on four neighboring mountains in the Upper Pastaza Watershed. All 26 species share distinctive floral and vegetative characters not found in the six previously described members of Teagueia, suggesting that all 26 evolved locally from a recent common ancestor. Each of the Teagueia Mountains hosts 7-15 sympatric species of new Teagueia, suggesting that the speciation events, which produced this radiation, may have occurred in sympatric populations. There is little overlap in the Teagueia species hosted by the mountains, though they are separated by only 10-18 km. This is difficult to explain in light of the high dispersal ability of most orchids. Surprisingly, the species appear not to be habitat specialists. In forest above 3100 m, population densities of these new Teagueia are higher than those of any other genera of terrestrial flowering plants. In the paramos of these mountains they are the most common orchids; they reach higher elevations (3650m) than any other pleurothallid orchid except Draconanthes aberrans.

  • How Many Orchid Species in Costa Rica? a Review of the Latest Discoveries
LANKESTERIANA 11(3): 185—205. 2011. HOW MANY ORCHID SPECIES IN COSTA RICA? A REVIEW OF THE LATEST DISCOVERIES DIEGO BOGARÍN Jardín Botánico Lankester, Universidad de Costa Rica, P. O. Box 302-7050, Cartago, Costa Rica; Centro de Investigación en Orquídeas de los Andes “Ángel Andreetta”, Universidad Alfredo Pérez Guerrero, Ecuador [email protected] ABSTRACT. Abstract. Despite its well-established tradition in botanical exploration, which started in 1846 with the visit of Oersted (1846), Costa Rica is still far from having a complete inventory of its orchidaceous flora. After the publication of the most recent and complete treatment of the family by Dressler in 2003, new species and records have been added on a regular basis to the country’s inventory. Showy, large-flowered species in previously monographed and botanically well-sampled genera such as Brassia, Dracula, Lycaste, Polycycnis, Stanhopea, and Trichopilia have been described, but the vast majority of species are small-flowered and belong to the subtribes Laeliinae, Pleurothallidinae, and Zygopetalinae. Identifying taxa with ephemeral flowers such as Sobralia is problematic, but a large living collection revealed many new species. Previously described species from other countries have regularly been recorded in Costa Rica. These new records have floristic affinities mainly with the floras of Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. As an example, Acianthera aberrans, Epidendrum scharfii, Epidendrum stellidifforme, Lockhartia chocoensis, Maxillaria bolivarensis, Ornithidium pendulum, Ornithocephalus montealegrae, and Warmingia zamorana have been found in both Costa Rica and Ecuador. The genus Uleiorchis with the Venezuelan species Uleiorchis ulaei, identified in the MO herbarium by Ron Liesner, constitutes an interesting new record in Costa Rica.

We describe and illustrate two new species of Echinosepala from Costa Rica, they are placed within a phylogenetic framework of the genus, and compared to their closest relatives. A short resume of the genus’ his- tory is given, reviewing the main characters that have been used to group its species at various taxonomic ranks. Echinosepala expolita is compared with E. pan, from which it mainly differs by the glabrous, inflated sheaths that cover the ramicaul, the distinctly broader ligulate-lanceolate leaves, the lanate-hirsute ovary, the much larg- er flower, and the tomentose abaxial indumentum of the sepals. Echinosepala longipedunculata is similar to E. aspasicensis, but can be recognized by the unusually long peduncle, the greenish yellow flower, the verrucose- tuberculate adaxial surface of the sepals, and the shorter, truncate, orange lip. A key to the Costa Rican species of Echinosepala is provided. A new combination in Echinosepala is proposed for Acianthera biseta from Peru. RESUMEN. Se describen e ilustran dos nuevas especies de Echinosepala de Costa Rica, discutiéndolas dentro del marco filogenético del género y comparándolas con sus parientes más cercanos.

  • The Secretory Glands of Asphodelus Aestivus Flower
6 The Secretory Glands of Asphodelus aestivus Flower Thomas Sawidis Department of Botany, University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Greece 1. Introduction Asphodelus aestivus Brot. (A. microcarpus Viv.), family of Asphodelaceae (Asparagales), is a perennial spring-flowering geophyte, widely distributed over the Mediterranean basin (Tutin et al., 1980). Its formations represent the last degradation stage of the Mediterranean type ecosystems. These ecosystems often referred to as “asphodel deserts” or “asphodel semi- deserts” result from drought, frequent fires, soil erosion and overgrazing (Naveh, 1973; Pantis & Margaris, 1988). It is found both in arid and semi-arid Mediterranean ecosystems (Margaris, 1984) and in certain regions of North Africa (Le Houerou, 1979). A. aestivus, as in the case of other geophytes (cryptophytes), has a considerable distribution, since it has become the dominant life form in many degraded Mediterranean ecosystems. It is a widespread and invasive weed of the calcareous soils of pastures and grasslands, on hill slopes interspaced among cultivated areas, particularly abundant along road sides. The ability of A. aestivus, a native floristic element, to spread and to dominate in all those areas over the Mediterranean region reflects its capacity to face not only the peculiarities of the Mediterranean climate, but also to resist these most common disturbances in its habitat (Pantis & Margaris, 1988). A. aestivus has two major phenological phases within a year. An active one (autumn - late spring) from leaf emergence to the senescence of the above-ground structures (photosynthetic period) and an inactive (summer) phase (dormancy), which lasts until the leaves emerge (Pantis et al., 1994). In February – March, the over wintering root tubers develop flat leaves (40-90 cm long x 2-4 cm width) and flowering stalks (70-170 cm tall) from a shoot apex.

INFORMATION TO USERS This manuscript has been reproduced from the microfilm master. UMI films the text directly from the original or copy submitted. Thus, some thesis and dissertation copies are in typewriter face, while others may be from any type of computer printer. The quality of this reproduction is dependent upon the quality of the copy submitted. Broken or indistinct print, colored or poor quality illustrations and photographs, print bleedthrough, substandard margins, and improper alignment can adversely afreet reproduction. In the unlikely event that the author did not send UMI a complete manuscript and there are missing pages, these will be noted. Also, if unauthorized copyright material had to be removed, a note will indicate the deletion. Oversize materials (e.g., maps, drawings, charts) are reproduced by sectioning the original, beginning at the upper left-hand comer and continuing from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps.
