• Jesus Christ Superstar began as an album in the U.K. It was released in 1970. • When it was brought to America, it was put on by Various high schools. Due to copyright laws* these productions were quickly shut down. • In 1971, Jesus Christ Superstar opened on Broadway. The original cast included Jeff Fenholt as Jesus Christ, Ben Vereen as Judas Iscariot, and Bob Bingham as Caiaphas. • When it began its run, Jesus Christ Superstar sparked a lot of controversy. Various Christian groups thought that the absence of a resurrection scene, among other things, was sacrilegious. Some Jewish groups were offended because of the portrayal of the Jewish high priests, who were the supposed villains of the show. • Jesus Christ Superstar closed on Broadway after an eighteen-month-long run. ■Cast qf CHARACTERS.
