Once you get past the sprawling resorts that now send their sprout- ing tubers and seeds out along the barren coastline—yes, they do market this place aggressively as the “Red Sea Riviera”—you suddenly find yourself in a land where time just seems to cease to exist. The sun wan- ders across the sky, so does the moon, but what day is it? Out in the desert, who cares? Who is there to care anyway, save for a few scattered Bedouins? Attracted by the rich marine life and favorable climate, tourism has become important for many Red Sea countries, with over 1 million tourists per year expected in the future. Extensive areas of the coastline have been developed to accommodate the increasing flux of tourists, especially in Aqaba of Jordan, the Jeddah coastline of Saudi Arabia and various areas along the Egyptian coastline. Many researchers have described the development of tourism on the Red Sea coast. But there are few publications about the possibilities of tourism development on the basis of water resources of the Red Sea. It is therefore very important to explore the possibilities of development of water tourism in the Red Sea. Through recent decades, significant advances in technology and the increase in international travel have made marine environments more accessible both in real and economic terms. Coastal and marine tourism has become a huge business that forms a significant component of the growing global tourism industry. The number of tourists attractions is not only determined by the capacity of the attractions themselves, but also by four other components: natural resources and environment; socially-economic environment; transportation; cultural resources. It discusses the concept of sustainable tourism development in the area, which leads to management of all resources in such a way that economic, social and natural needs can be fulfilled while maintaining culture integrity, essential ecological processes, biological diversity and life support systems.

Dan Bradley Swale 2015 ii Abstract The Sinai Peninsula’s security environment has altered significantly since President Mubarak’s overthrow in January 2011. Though Sinai has a history of militant Islamism, prior to 2011 violence was uncommon and limited in scope. Today, conflict is widespread and described by commentators as an insurgency. Violence has increased in frequency and is qualitatively different. Violence has also spilt beyond Sinai, affecting not just Egypt, but Israel and the wider region. This thesis maps how the Arab Spring has affected Sinai’s security environment. This is important as continued security deterioration demonstrates that Egypt’s actions there have failed. To explain why, this thesis provides a framework for understanding the security environment’s principal actors: Egypt, Israel, Gaza, militant Islamists and the Bedouin. Mapping Sinai’s security environment explains the nature of post-Mubarak changes and how these actors influenced these changes. The thesis demonstrates that regardless of the government in Cairo, Egypt’s military has controlled Sinai’s security and has viewed it through a solely security- based lens.

Letter from the Editor Certain things in life will almost always come back to haunt you – it’s the law of the universe. Call it karma if you like, but there is no denying its existence when it comes to particular things. Take extreme smugness for instance. If you, like some of us lucky souls, live in permanent sunshine with the tropical coral reefs of the Red Sea and breathtaking desert on your doorstep, I challenge you not to succumb to its seductive force. I confess I have had my moments. My Facebook status updates since moving to the Red Sea have been littered with manta ray, hammerhead, sailfish, whale shark, turtle and just loving-outdoor-life smugness. Although…ah hem…I like to call it more of a celebration of life…cough, cough. I’m sure my Facebook friends, including those who have deleted me, agree. But when I and others (yes, you know who you all are), started talking about warmth and sunshine when Europe was digging its way out of the snow, did anyone else notice that the heavens suddenly opened on the desert and we experienced the worst rainfall in 14 years?!
