  • Joe Cocker: Mad Dogs & Englishmen
The Cavaliers o Vance Arnold & The Avengers.

Share The Cranberries barely knew how to play their instruments. They became one of the biggest rock bands in the world. Brothers Noel and Mike Hogan met Fergal Lawler while breakdancing in a park in the small Irish city of Limerick. They were young teenagers at that stage, and as their adolescence went on, their tastes began to change. ! LISTEN 2h “As we got older, in the late-80s, we became a lot more interested in alternative music,” Noel Hogan tells Double J. “We started listening to The Cure, The Smiths, Echo & the Bunnymen, that kinda thing.” This coming of age coincided with increased activity in the Limerick underground music scene, and the three friends were right into it. “Around that time a lot of bands in Limerick started to form,” Hogan recalls. “We used to go to the gigs, we never really thought we'd be in a band, but we were really, really into the music.” But they couldn’t resist the allure of being on stage. Before long, they’d started their own garage band and roped in a more experienced campaigner. “Eventually Ferg started playing drums, Mike picked up the bass and I got a guitar. A friend of ours [Niall Quinn] was a drummer in another local band, but he wanted to be a singer.

About this English translation: The book was written in German; my mother tongue, it is the only language I know as a writer, with all nuances. My story about J.J. Cale's music and his artistic career would of course have deserved a professional English translation - but unfortunately, as an independent musician and author, I really lack the necessary money for this. That's why I translated the book here for you with deepl.com - it is currently the best online translator worldwide. I have additionally enhanced the Deepl-translation, but my English is limited - the subtleties of my mother tongue are lost, partly also the humor, and there will be some mistakes in presentation (f.e. with some "-characters) and maybe also grammar errors here and there. So if you have the feeling that certain phrases don't make sense or sound strange - just think "the computer is inferior to humans" - or for my sake "they're crazy, these Swiss guys!" :-) I'm sure you as a J.J. Cale fan will understand and enjoy the story anyway, and maybe here and there you'll learn hitherto unknown details about the wonderful J.J. Cale and his immortal music.
