It's only rock & roll | Pep Saña | Actualitzat el 22/11/2017 a les 10:00 Joe Cocker: Mad Dogs & Englishmen Fantàstic intèrpret en directe, Joe Cocker és conegut per la seva veu aspra i pel gran sentiment que posava en les seves interpretacions, especialista per dotar de personalitat pròpia els temes dels altres amb magistrals pinzellades de soul, blues i rock, no va ser massa prolífic a nivell compositiu, tot i que va escriure alguns grans temes. Els seus grans èxits vénen de les versions, algunes de molt singulars, la de With A Little Help From My Friends no la coneixerien ni els Beatles si li canvien la lletra i altres calcades, com el Summer In The City de Lovin' Spoonful. Altres, dels molts grups i solistes versionats per Cocker són, Honeybus, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone via Animals, Harry Nilsson, Procol Harum, Rolling Stones, Box Tops, Billy Preston o Traffic. Joe Cocker va néixer el 20 de maig de 1944 a Sheffield, Anglaterra. Les principals influències musicals de Cocker durant la seva adolescència van ser Ray Charles i Lonnie Donegan. La seva veu de característica Soul li va proporcionar una marca pròpia en el món del rock dels anys 60. Abans d'aconseguir la fama havia estat en diferents bandes Pop de principis dels 60, com The Cavaliers o Vance Arnold & The Avengers. De les versions, a més del seu número 1, With A Little Help From My Friends dels Beatles, trobem, Do I Still Figure In Your Life? de Honeybus, Just Like A Woman i I Shall Be Realeased de Bob Dylan, Feelin' Alright de Traffic, o Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, tema interpretat en els seus orígens per Nina Simone i famós per la gran versió de The Animals. La nova formació de Cocker's Grease Band es va embarcar en la seva primera gira pels Estats Units a la primavera de 1969, Cocker va actuar als festivals americans com el Newport Rock Festival i el Denver Pop Festival. (1969) va ser el seu segon àlbum, es tracta d'un altre dels seus àlbums importants, coproduït entre Denny Cordell i Leon Russell. En els dies anteriors a la gravació va conèixer a Leon Russell, un músic d'estudi excepcional acostumat a aportar el seu talent pianístic a diferents artistes com Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Rolling Stones o Elton John, va ser el segon descobriment important de la carrera de Joe Cocker. Les quatre extenuants jornades d'assajos als estudis de la discogràfica A&M van reunir, a més de Cocker i Russell, a la guitarra i piano, a Chris Stainton a l'òrgan, la guitarra rítmica de Don Preston, el baix de Carl Radle, una percussió amb tres bateries, entre ells el gran Jim Keltner, una secció de vent en la que destacava Bobby Keys, llegendari col?laborador entre molts d'altres dels Rolling Stones, i un cor de veus de deu components. Un cop acabats els assajos, el productor de Cocker, Denny Cordell, va instar a Russell a fer la selecció definitiva de la banda per començar la gira, amb peticions tan raonables com reduir la percussió a un bateria.
