The O'neal Twins
The O’Neal Twins by Opal Louis Nations The O’Neal Twins hailed from a long-established family out of central St. Louis. Their grandparents belonged to the Pentecostal movement headquartered at the All Saints Holiness Church, which later became associated with The Church of God in Christ denomination of Missouri, under the guidance of the late bishop Daniel Bostic. Twins Edgar and Edward were born in 1938 to Rowena and Edward O’Neal III. Early vocal endeavors were encouraged by their pastor, Elder James Ward Senior. However, the lads did not take singing seriously until they were well into their teens. Fooling around on piano and knowing little about harmony, the boys fudged around with a few songs for awhile. The O’Neals were hampered by the fact that they came from a non-musical family. But the boys persevered and by the late fifties were singing at storefront churches, prayer meetings, and occasional trips to guest on programs out of town. St. Louis, of course, is home to The Greater Bethlehem Baptist Church on Washington Street, pastored by the Rev. Cleophus Robinson. The O’Neals became featured guests on Robinson’s church programs. In 1962, the twins were introduced by Robinson to Don Robey, head of Peacock Records in Houston, who signed the pair to a five-year contract. The twins’ first single, topped with the song “Every day with Jesus,” yielded promising sales figures. The O’Neals were fortunate enough to appear on Peter Brysac’s “TV Gospel time” over the spring of 1965. On the program, hosted by Georgia Lewis with Professor Alfred Miller handing the musical arrangements, the duo sang three selections, “Power in the blood,” the twosome’s then current release, plus rapturous renditions of “Prayer is the key” and “Keep in touch with Jesus” from a single put out a year earlier. -

A similar eclecticism and scope also surfaced in his solo work, which couched his charmingly gravelly voice in a rustic yet rich swamp pop fusion of country, blues, and gospel. Born Claude Russell Bridges on April 2, 1942, in Lawton, Oklahoma, he began studying classical piano at age three, a decade later adopting the trumpet and forming his first band. At 14, Russell lied about his age to land a gig at a Tulsa nightclub, playing behind Ronnie Hawkins & the Hawks before touring in support of Jerry Lee Lewis. Two years later, he settled in Los Angeles, studying guitar under the legendary James Burton and appearing on sessions with Dorsey Burnette and Glen Campbell. As a member of Spector’s renowned studio group, Russell played on many of the finest pop singles of the ’60s, also arranging classics like Ike & Tina Turner’s monumental “River Deep, Mountain High”; other hits bearing his input include the Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man,” Gary Lewis & the Playboys’ “This Diamond Ring,” and Herb Alpert’s “A Taste of Honey.” In 1967, Russell built his own recording studio, teaming with guitarist Marc Benno to record the acclaimed Look Inside the Asylum Choir LP. -

PURPOSE: Annual celebration benefitting The Church Studio Foundation and the Tulsa Day Center for the Homeless. The Church Studio Music Foundation is a non-profit organization with a mission to the Tulsa and surrounding community through music programs, artist development and education.The Tulsa Day Center for the Homeless is a non-profit center providing clients with the need to overcome homelessness, providing a health clinic, case management and the ability to re- enter the community and provide housing on a daily basis. Owned by Leon Russell, the studio is currently under extensive renovation to honor the past music and musicians that played in this historic location. JAMIE OLDAKER: For over forty years, Jamie Oldaker has built a career in the music industry as one of the world’s most respected drummers. Jamie began his career with Leon Russell at the Church Studio as a session musician. He joined Bob Seger and recorded the original Turn the Page track. Bassist Carl Radle introduced Jamie’s playing to Eric Clapton and was then asked to come to Miami and be a part of Eric’s band in 1974 and recorded 461 Ocean Boulevard, which was the beginning of a long career and friendship with Clapton. Jamie will be joining Eric again this summer at the Crossroads Guitar Festival 2019. -

Steve Ripley A rock and roll legend in our own backyard who has worked with some of the greats. Chapter 01 – 1:16 Introduction Announcer: Steve Ripley grew up in Oklahoma, graduating from Glencoe High School and Oklahoma State University. He went on to become a recording artist, record producer, song writer, studio engineer, guitarist, and inventor. Steve worked with Bob Dylan playing guitar on The Shot of Love album and on The Shot of Love tour. Dylan listed Ripley as one of the good guitarist he had played with. Red Dirt was first used by Steve Ripley’s band Moses when the group chose the label name Red Dirt Records. Steve founded Ripley Guitars in Burbank, California, creating guitars for musicians like Jimmy Buffet, J. J. Cale, and Eddie Van Halen. In 1987, Steve moved to Tulsa to buy Leon Russell’s recording facility, The Church Studio. Steve formed the country band The Tractors and was the cowriter of the country hit “Baby Like to Rock It.” Under his own record label Boy Rocking Records, Steve produced such artists as The Tractors, Leon Russell, and the Red Dirt Rangers. Steve Ripley was sixty-nine when he died January 3, 2019. But you can listen to Steve talk about his family story, his introduction to music, his relationship with Bob Dylan, dining with the Beatles, and his friendship with Leon Russell.
