"Best Golf Courses in Portland" Created by: Cityseeker 8 Locations Bookmarked Eastmoreland Golf Course "Old Local Favorite" This course is a favorite among Portland golfers. However you'd never know it was such a heavily played public course due to its immaculate condition. You'll find plenty of water hazards, old trees and other challenges along the 6,508-yard track. Surrounding the course are Johnson Creek, Crystal Springs Lake and Crystal Springs Rhododendron by Another Believer Garden. The city championship traditionally takes place here. The great conditions and beautiful layout aren't the real reason it's so popular with locals. The real reason is the budget-friendly price. It can get crowded, but you will practically have the course to yourself on a weekday morning. OREGON MUSIC / DECEMBER 1979-99 JON photo Gustavo Rapoport KOONCE OREGON VENUE GUIDE Quarterflash at the Last Hurrah,1982. photo David Wilds Page 2 - TWO LOUIES, December 1999 December 1979 to 1999 One Long Journey Through The Portland Music Scene By SP Clarke “ ow in the world could anybody write about Portland bands for Hso long?” is probably the most frequently asked question I have encountered over the past twenty years, when confronted by a member of the local community at large, upon learning of my mostly ulterior identity as a long-time local music “critic.” My shocking reply is always the same. It’s been surprisingly easy! It would be difficult, if not impossible for a local music novitiate, staring at the year 2000, to envision the scene that was thriving in Portland back in 1979. It was nearly unrecognizable by today’s standards. The state was fresh from an edict handed down by the OLCC in 1972 that, at last, permitted the unholy admixture of live music, performed by real, living human beings, to be played in Oregon taverns. That was a luxury which, in the ’60s, was afforded only to hard- liquor “dinner clubs,” such as Jazz pianist Sidney Porter’s immemorable Sidney’s club in Tony DeMicoli at LaBamba, 1981. photo Michael Moran Northwest Portland. The alternatives were non-alcoholic venues: Folk coffehouses such Liberal attitudes toward drinking and drugs, national. Pleasure, who started out in Portland as the Psychedelic Supermarket and the Folk and few harmful socially-transmitted diseases, in 1974, quickly rose to regional prominence.

  • Sporting Legends: Greg Norman
SPORTING LEGENDS: GREG NORMAN SPORT: GOLF COMPETITIVE ERA: 1976 - PRESENT Greg Norman (born February 10, 1955 in Queensland, Australia), is an Australian professional golfer who spent 331 weeks as the world's number one ranked golfer in the 1980s and 1990s. He is nicknamed "The Shark". Norman began his career as a trainee in the Royal Queensland golf shop, earning AUD 38 a week. The first professional tournament he won was the 1976 West Lakes Classic in his home country, and he soon moved on to success on the European Tour and later the PGA Tour. Norman won The Open Championship twice, in 1986 and 1993. Despite "The Great White Shark"'s (a reference to a shark inhabiting Australian waters as well as Norman's size and blond locks) huge success on the US PGA TOUR and many wins in other events around the world, Norman will be forever regarded as underachieving given his talents by missing out in The Masters, US Open, and PGA Championship. He was equally a victim of his own bad luck, and good luck on the part of his fellow golfers (losing a near-certain PGA Championship win in 1986 after Bob Tway holed a bunker shot, and losing The Masters the following year in a playoff by an even more miraculous 45-yard chip shot from Larry Mize), and a couple of infamous "chokes" where Norman's wobble-prone putting got the better of him. To underscore this point, in 1986, he led all four majors after the third round, but only won The Open.
