McMillin Manhattan Transference: Reader Itineraries in Modernist New York The development of transportation technologies played a vital role in New York City’s transformation into a modern metropolis. Between 1884 and 1893, travel by rapid transit in New York increased by 250 percent,1 and “by 1920 there were 2,365,000,000 riders annually on all city transit lines . twice as many as all the steam railroads in the country carried” (Michael W. Brooks 90). The Elevated trains, which were completed by 1880,2 and the subways, opened in 1904, fueled construction and crowding in the booming city,3 and they fundamentally altered the everyday experience of living in New York. These modern transit technologies were novel in and of themselves, but, moreover, they offered passengers previously unaccessible views of the urban landscape through which they moved: from above the streets on an Elevated track, from underground in a subway tunnel, and so on. -

The Great War had destroyed traditional models of heroism for twenties intellectuals such as Ernest Hemingway, Edmund Wilson, Malcolm Cowley, E. E. Cummings, Hart Crane, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and John Dos Passos, compelling them to create a new understanding of what I call the “heroic self.” Through a modernist, experience based, epistemology these writers deemed that the relationship between the heroic individual and the world consisted of a dialectical tension between irony and romance. The ironic interpretation, the view that the world is an antagonistic force out to suppress individual vitality, drove these intellectuals to adopt the Freudian conception of heroism as a revolt against social oppression. The Lost Generation rebelled against these pernicious forces which they believed existed in the forms of militarism, patriotism, progressivism, and absolutism. The -

Review: John Reed, Ten Days That Shook the World Barney Doherty thing but a detailed account’ of the revolu- tion, amongst its pages are counters to the common criticism of the revolution as well as several important lessons for revolutionaries today. Immediately in Ten Days That Shook the World, Reed reveals how Russian society was in a flux. Ideas were being debated on street corners and in large halls, all of Russia, he writes, ‘was learning to read politics, eco- nomics, history because people wanted to know.’ The masses were not passive spec- tators of the political discussion but were energetic participants. Aron, Chair This dissertation explores the social, cultural, and economic history of horse stealing among both American Indians and Euro Americans in Lincoln County, Nebraska from 1860 to 1890. It shows how American Indians and Euro-Americans stole from one another during the Plains Indian Wars and explains how a culture of theft prevailed throughout the region until the late-1870s. But as homesteaders flooded into Lincoln County during the 1870s and 1880s, they demanded that the state help protect their private property. These demands encouraged state building efforts in the region, which in turn drove horse stealing – and the thieves themselves – underground. However, when newspapers and local leaders questioned the efficacy of these efforts, citizens took extralegal steps to secure private property and augment, or subvert, the law. -

In fact, they promote elements of early American life such as racism, misogyny and anti-radicalism, and make negative statements about the aspects of society that did not conform to conservative White Anglo-Saxon Protestantism. [j Acknowledgements First of all, I would like to thank my thesis advisors, Professors Anita Chari, Alison Gash, and Casey Shoop. Professor Chari is a wonderful instructor, whose class on radical political theory motivated me to continually think critically about the world. Gregory Alan-Kingman Hom, IS 281 Historical Research Methodology The Southern California Library for Social Studies and Research: An Independent Home for the Left Term paper written for Professor Maack’s class on Historical Research Methodology Introduction/Scope of the Presentation The Southern California Library for Social Studies and Research (SCL) is a library and archive situated in South Central Los Angeles. The SCL has regular presentations of speakers or films on topics relating to the community organizing efforts of Los Angeles activists. The SCL was initially the work of Emil Freed, the son of anarchists and brought up with the consciousness that the world needed to be changed. His political life led him to John Reed Clubs in 1929, which were associated with the Communist Party USA (CPUSA); he eventually became a member of the CPUSA, with which he was associated until his dying days. The library has a diverse collection today. It is in possession of most of the of the run of The California Eagle, one of the West Coast’s oldest African-American newspapers; the papers of labor unions; materials of the Jewish Left in Los Angeles; and materials on the Southern California branch of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. Quite interesting is that later board members joined the New American Movement (NAM), an organization that attracted those who had left the CPUSA- papers relating to their involvement with that group are included in those later board members’ personal papers. The reality is that historical collections on Chican@s and Latin@s are less well represented, and still less on Asian-Americans. -

CHAPTER 8 Bohemians Greenwich Village and The Masses Joanna Levin Ever since Rodolphe, Henri Murger's prototypical struggling writer, stood before the grave of Mimi, his lost love and partner in the romance of bohemia, crying, "Oh my youth, it is you that is being buried," la vie boheme has represented a fabled transitional period between youth and mature adulthood in many an individual life, memoir, and Bildungsroman (Seigel 45). Similarly, ever since its inception in the wake of the 1830 Rev olution in France, bohemianism - as a larger subcultural movement has flourished during periods of historical transition. It was in the tumultuous lead-up to the Civil War that la vie boheme first took root in the United States (in a basement beer hall beneath the sidewalks of Broadway and Bleecker and on the pages of the New York Saturday Press), but it was dur ing the 1910s, the decade known for ushering in a host of radical and mod ernist movements, that bohemia assumed its most famous American form in New York City's Greenwich Village. -

I. LENIN KARL MARX KARL MARX was born May 5, 1818, in the city of Trier, in the Rhine province of Prussia. His father was a lawyer-a Jew, who in 1824 adopted Protestantism. The family was well-to-do, cultured, bu~ not revolutionary. After graduating from the Gymnasium in Trier, Marx entered first the University at Bonn, later Berlin University, where he studied 'urisprudence, but devoted most of his time to history and philosop y. At th conclusion of his uni versity course in 1841, he submitted his doctoral dissertation on Epicure's philosophy:* Marx at that time was still an adherent of Hegel's idealism. In Berlin he belonged to the circle of "Left Hegelians" (Bruno Bauer and others) who sought to draw atheistic and revolutionary conclusions from Hegel's philosophy. After graduating from the University, Marx moved to Bonn in the expectation of becoming a professor. However, the reactionary policy of the government,-that in 1832 had deprived Ludwig Feuer bach of his chair and in 1836 again refused to allow him to teach, while in 1842 it forbade the Y0ung professor, Bruno Bauer, to give lectures at the University-forced Marx to abandon the idea of pursuing an academic career.
