SUMMARY OF HISTORIC INTEREST The designed landscape at Healaugh Park and Manor has three distinct phases of development spanning the thirteenth to eighteenth centuries. The medieval deer park, Healaugh Park, was established prior to 1217 and it evolved and changed through to the post medieval period and was still in use until at least 1707. A small moated enclosure, containing the remains of a building, with sixteenth century pottery finds, may have been a hunting lodge, associated with the deer park. Within the park lay the site of an Augustinian priory, Healaugh Park Priory, which has evidence of a surrounding precinct wall that may have enclosed gardens. Following the Dissolution of the monasteries the priory buildings were converted to an Elizabethan manor house, Healaugh Manor (Figure 1). During this second phase of development the house was surrounded by orchards and gardens contained within an ornamental moat. The wider deer park was also reshaped at this time to create a smaller parkland enclosed by a park pale bank and ditch. The third phase in the late 1 seventeenth century saw the creation of more elaborate garden features, as an axial walk and tree avenue, terminating in a half-moon, were laid out.

Summary description Moated sites are disproportionately represented on the Heritage at Risk (HAR) Register. It has been assumed that all moated sites contain deposit types conducive to organic preservation in their ditches. Consequently, a significant minority are considered to be at ‘high’ risk and in a ‘declining’ condition trend. These assumptions require substantiating through site investigation. As a pilot study, the presence or absence of deposit types conducive to organic preservation has been determined for 25 sites in Yorkshire and the Humber. This project has not fully characterised any organic material encountered; sampling for laboratory-based palaeoenvironmental assessment and scientific dating would have to form the basis of a separate follow-on project.     Elements of Latin Origin in P-Celtic Place-names between the Walls Alan G. James The Scottish Place-Name Society The status of Latin in Roman Britannia, how widely it was spoken, whether in some parts it may have replaced British as the common vernacular, and for how long and where it may have remained in use after the end of Roman rule, are all questions that are topics of lively current debate.1 Attention has focused, to a substantial and understandable extent, on the evidence from and for the lowland, ‘civil’ south and east of the province. However, a controversial view of the influence of Latin on the British language of the highland, ‘military’ north and west has been put forward in a succession of papers by Peter Schrijver.2 And even in southern Scotland, the presence of fifth- and sixth-century inscribed stones commemorating laypersons in a Latin apparently having vernacular characteristics, raises tantalising questions.3 Such topics are outwith the expertise of the present writer and, while the evidence presented may contribute a little to those discussions, the main purpose in bringing it together is to inquire further into the nature of the Brittonic language of the north, addressing the question, how similar to, or different from, the West Brittonic dialect that evolved into Old Welsh that language might have been. The presence by the time of the earliest substantial records of the Welsh language of quite a wide range of words adopted from Latin is well recognised. Jackson (1953, 78–80) gives a list of nearly 300 Latin words (not counting personal names) that were present in the Brittonic languages by the 12th century.
