  • Our Pullein Ancestors
OUR PULLEIN ANCESTORS J Brian Hardaker Version dated May 2017 The # numbers are the identification numbers in Our Family Tree on the website Names in bold type are believed to be in my direct ancestral line. Our link to the Pullein family comes through Mary Pullan, the wife of John Hardaker of Idle. Mary was born in Idle in 1786 and died there in 1854. She and John had ten children, among them Samuel Hardaker, father of John Lee Hardaker, my paternal grandfather. We can trace the history of the Pullans because of the vast research effort into the family by Catharine Pullein in her book The Pulleyns of Yorkshire, published in 1915 by J. Whitehead and Son of Leeds (pp. viii + 799). What follows comes mostly from that source.1 The Origin of the Name As is clear from the variants already introduced, there have been many different spellings of the name. While Pullan seems most common these days, we shall soon see that there are reasons to believe that Pullein or Pulleyn would be more correct. After examining a number of other possibilities, Catharine concludes that the name originated in the Crusades. This long series of wars, which occurred intermittently for about 200 years, have some echoes in modern problems in the Middle East. In A.D. 1095 a religious fanatic called Peter the Hermit became fired with holy indignation at insults by Moslems to the Christian pilgrims visiting Jerusalem and at the desecration of sacred places there. He travelled around Europe rousing Christians with stories of the wrongs done.

  • Netherlands, Fleet Lane, York, YO26 7QE £695,000 Netherlands, Fleet Lane, York £695,000
Netherlands, Fleet Lane, York, YO26 7QE £695,000 Netherlands, Fleet Lane, York £695,000 *A substantial period family home * Original period features * Scope to extend * Excellent for the commuter 5 1 3 Description A substantial double fronted brick built period family home, set in gardens and paddock land of approximately 4.114 acres on the edge of this much sought after, conveniently placed village. A unique period family home which is now in need of complete modernisation and refurbishment, allowing a purchaser to implement their own ideas and standard of finish on a superb detached residence. The property retains some original period features, including cornicing, doors and flooring. The property occupies a particularly large site with gardens on all sides allowing the scope for extension and alteration, subject to obtaining the necessary planning approval. There is also a single garage on site. The property does have the benefit of oil fired central heating, which is powered by the Rayburn in the kitchen, though is now in need of general modernisation and updating. The bathroom has been modernised, however the remaining property will require work. There is a fully operational business which is being sold with the property in the form of Paws and Claws Pet Hotel, where trading accounts are available for inspection upon request. There is the scope to expand that business significantly from its current form, but purpose built dog kennels and cattery are on the site. The licence will need updating for the cattery and would need to be knocked down and replaced to renew the licence for cats.

LS25 3AA A map for this walk can be obtained by using the following link:- http://www.walk4life.info/walk/harrys-walks-aberford-becca-banks-parlington See NOTE 1 for detailed history Walk: From Cock Beck Bridge, walk away from the beck passing the Arabian Horse public house on your right to take the first lane on your left, opposite a public bridleway sign. Continue along the lane passing cottages on your left and then Becca Bank Villas. 200 yards further on, turn left into a wood along a ‘permissive footpath’. Carry along this distinctive path as it winds its way through the wood eventually arriving below Becca Bank Crag on your right. See NOTE 2 Continue following the path, through the wood to eventually emerge on to the lane that you left a while back. At this point, turn left continuing to walk along the road for about ½ a mile where Becca Hall eventually comes into view. See NOTE3. Before you reach the hall, turn left at a post which says ‘no public right of way’ and within 100 yards on reaching a footpath sign by a wood, turn left through a gate to follow the sign to Parlington. Now continue down a wide track through the wood and at the bottom, on reaching a field, bear slight right along the top of a field with a row of trees on your right.

  • Boroughbridge Striders Walking Group Summary Schedule of Walks for 2019 (See Below for Details of Walks) June 1 – Rural Round
Boroughbridge Striders Walking Group Summary Schedule of Walks for 2019 (See below for details of walks) June 1 – Rural Round Walk July 6 – Ripon Round Walk August 17 – South Ripon Rowel 16 Walk September 21 – River Round Walk (2) October 26 – Round of Copgrove Winter 2019/20 - a possible walk for a Saturday during the winter months is the Easingwold/Crayke 13 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Boroughbridge Striders Who are Boroughbridge Striders? Boroughbridge Striders is a new (May 2019), experimental, informal walking group that focuses on walks in the 12-20 miles range, mainly in the local area When/how did it start? It was by started by John Helliwell shortly after the Boroughbridge Easter Walking Festival of 2019. 8 people, having completed the 17 mile “River Round” walk in just over 6 hours indicated that similar walks might be attractive and desirable in the future, based on a perceived interest in “longer walks”. What are the features of Boroughbridge Striders, apart from the length of the walks? • It’s for fit, experienced, adult walkers, not for beginners or children • The pace might be described as “brisk”; there are few, if any, stops, apart from a brief break for lunch (packed) • Pubs and café stops are not on the menu; neither are talks en route connected with points of human and geographical interest and local history • As far as possible, the walks take place in the Boroughbridge/Lower Ure Valley area with minimal dependence on motor vehicles and the need travel by car to distant start points. We start and finish at the same point Is there an underlying philosophy? Not really; but maintaining personal fitness through walking is at the heart of what Boroughbridge Striders is about.

  • Selby District Historic Designed Landscapes Project Healaugh Park and Manor
YORKSHIRE GARDENS TRUST Selby District Historic Designed Landscapes Project Healaugh Park and Manor Report by Yvonne Boutwood [October 2016] 1. CORE DATA 1.1 Name of site: Healaugh Park and Manor 1.2 Grid reference: SE 486459 1.3 Administrative area: Healaugh Civil Parish, Selby District, North Yorkshire (Current) County, West Riding of Yorkshire (Historic) County 1.4 Current site designation: Not on Historic England’s Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England 2. SUMMARY OF HISTORIC INTEREST The designed landscape at Healaugh Park and Manor has three distinct phases of development spanning the thirteenth to eighteenth centuries. The medieval deer park, Healaugh Park, was established prior to 1217 and it evolved and changed through to the post medieval period and was still in use until at least 1707. A small moated enclosure, containing the remains of a building, with sixteenth century pottery finds, may have been a hunting lodge, associated with the deer park. Within the park lay the site of an Augustinian priory, Healaugh Park Priory, which has evidence of a surrounding precinct wall that may have enclosed gardens. Following the Dissolution of the monasteries the priory buildings were converted to an Elizabethan manor house, Healaugh Manor (Figure 1). During this second phase of development the house was surrounded by orchards and gardens contained within an ornamental moat. The wider deer park was also reshaped at this time to create a smaller parkland enclosed by a park pale bank and ditch. The third phase in the late 1 seventeenth century saw the creation of more elaborate garden features, as an axial walk and tree avenue, terminating in a half-moon, were laid out.
