  • Selby District Historic Designed Landscapes Project Healaugh Park and Manor
YORKSHIRE GARDENS TRUST Selby District Historic Designed Landscapes Project Healaugh Park and Manor Report by Yvonne Boutwood [October 2016] 1. CORE DATA 1.1 Name of site: Healaugh Park and Manor 1.2 Grid reference: SE 486459 1.3 Administrative area: Healaugh Civil Parish, Selby District, North Yorkshire (Current) County, West Riding of Yorkshire (Historic) County 1.4 Current site designation: Not on Historic England’s Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England 2. SUMMARY OF HISTORIC INTEREST The designed landscape at Healaugh Park and Manor has three distinct phases of development spanning the thirteenth to eighteenth centuries. The medieval deer park, Healaugh Park, was established prior to 1217 and it evolved and changed through to the post medieval period and was still in use until at least 1707. A small moated enclosure, containing the remains of a building, with sixteenth century pottery finds, may have been a hunting lodge, associated with the deer park. Within the park lay the site of an Augustinian priory, Healaugh Park Priory, which has evidence of a surrounding precinct wall that may have enclosed gardens. Following the Dissolution of the monasteries the priory buildings were converted to an Elizabethan manor house, Healaugh Manor (Figure 1). During this second phase of development the house was surrounded by orchards and gardens contained within an ornamental moat. The wider deer park was also reshaped at this time to create a smaller parkland enclosed by a park pale bank and ditch. The third phase in the late 1 seventeenth century saw the creation of more elaborate garden features, as an axial walk and tree avenue, terminating in a half-moon, were laid out.

  • North Yorkshire County Council Election Results 1973-2009
North Yorkshire County Council Election Results 1973-2009 Colin Rallings and Michael Thrasher The Elections Centre Plymouth University The information contained in this report has been obtained from a number of sources. Election results from the immediate post-reorganisation period were painstakingly collected by Alan Willis largely, although not exclusively, from local newspaper reports. From the mid- 1980s onwards the results have been obtained from each local authority by the Elections Centre. The data are stored in a database designed by Lawrence Ware and maintained by Brian Cheal and others at Plymouth University. Despite our best efforts some information remains elusive whilst we accept that some errors are likely to remain. Notice of any mistakes should be sent to [email protected]. The results sequence can be kept up to date by purchasing copies of the annual Local Elections Handbook, details of which can be obtained by contacting the email address above. Front cover: the graph shows the distribution of percentage vote shares over the period covered by the results. The lines reflect the colours traditionally used by the three main parties. The grey line is the share obtained by Independent candidates while the purple line groups together the vote shares for all other parties. Rear cover: the top graph shows the percentage share of council seats for the main parties as well as those won by Independents and other parties. The lines take account of any by- election changes (but not those resulting from elected councillors switching party allegiance) as well as the transfers of seats during the main round of local election.

  • Documentary Records of Floods in the Vale of Pickering
Documentary records of floods in the Vale of Pickering These records are taken from the British Hydrological Society Chronology of Hydrological Events. As they are documentary records, their content is partly a function of the recording of events coupled to the extent to which documents have been found. However, they show a notable phenomenon, often found in other flood records, of a flood rich period in the late-nineteenth century followed by a flood poor period in the early 20 th century. There then follows the textual descriptions that accompanies each flood. Figure 1. Dates of documented flood records before 1950. Note that these are documented which means that they are not equivalent to the continual record of a water level recorder and reflect time-varying trends in the extent to which documents were recorded. 1750 1770 1790 1810 1830 1850 1870 1890 1910 1930 1950 " A sudden inundation of the river Rye happened at Helmsley in Yorkshire, such as had never been known by the oldest people in those parts, probably occasioned by the late heavy rains. Two houses were entirely washed away , the one inhabited by James Holdforth, he and his whole family drowned, except his wife, who being sick in her bed, was carried down the stream half a mile, and at last washed off into a field, where she was found the next morning very little hurt. The other house belonged to John Sunley, was also drowned, and all his family. In the whole thirteen persons.(sic) Two other houses were greatly damaged, as was also the stone bridge at the entrance to the town; fourteen hay-stacks were driven down the river a mile, on one of which was a half year old calf, who kept its footing, and was taken off alive.

Site Allocations Development Plan Document Settlement-Specific Issues Barlby & Osgodby Designated Service Village Barlby village lies at the junction of the A19(T) and the A63(T). Although falling within Barlby Parish, Barlby Bridge is well related to Selby town, being situated on the opposite bank of the river Ouse and contained by a bend in the river. Barlby maintains an overall rural character, with higher density new development tucked behind the main thoroughfare. Barlby Bridge lies numerous terraced properties off the A19(T) Barlby Road provides the focus for residential and employment development with a number of established employment uses already existing in this area south of the A19(T). Osgodby is situated predominantly on the northern side of the A63 around the junction, and has a close association with Barlby. Osgodby is a small, compact settlement which still retains agricultural connections. Frontage development exists along Hull Road along the south-western edge of the village, with some local services. Whilst neighbouring Barlby accommodated significant residential development, most of the older houses in Osgodby front York Road. These villages have a reasonable range of facilities, including a café/shop, hairdressers, newsagent, village hall, garden centre, builders merchant, Methodist Church and hall, schools and a public house. Barlby village is constrained by the river Ouse and the A19(T) Barlby bypass to the west and east respectively. The break of open land on either side of the bypass separating Barlby and Osgodby along with Barlby Bridge by the river Ouse to the south and west and by the line of the existing by pass should provide a gateway entrance to Selby.
