Biographical / Historical John Cunningham Lilly (1915-2001) was a physiologist, biologist, and medical doctor known for his work with dolphins and interspecies communication, as well as research on the brain and consciousness which resulted in his invention of the isolation tank. Lilly was born the son of a banker in St. Paul, Minnesota. He attended the California Institute of Technology, graduating in 1938 with Physics and Biology degrees. He then attended medical school at Dartmouth and the University of Pennsylvania. During World War II, he conducted experiments on the physiological effect of high altitudes, which began his investigation into brain function. After the war he trained as a psychoanalyst and conducted brain research for the National Institutes of Health, including the development of techniques for electrical stimulation of the brain. In 1954 he devised a sensory deprivation tank, and later began self-administering LSD and other drugs in the solitude of the tank. Lilly's counterculture ideas and lifestyle made him contemporaries with such figures as Timothy Leary, Ram Dass, and Werner Erhard (all frequent guests at Lilly's home), but it also invited skepticism from more conservative scientists. His tank experiments led to an interest in aquatic life, especially cetaceans, and in 1959 he established the Communication Research Institute in Miami and the Virgin Islands to study the vocalizations of bottle-nosed dolphins. Further research into dolphin communication was conducted at the JANUS (Joint Analog Numerical Understanding System) Project in San Francisco, using computers to interpret dolphin speech. Lilly created the non-profit Human Dolphin Foundation in Malibu, California in 1976. He is the author of 19 books, including Man and Dolphin, The Center of the Cyclone, and an autobiography The Scientist, as well as hundreds of papers. Lilly retired to Maui in 1992 and died of heart failure at the age of 86. The John C. Lilly Research Institute continues his research. Preferred Citation [identification of item], John C. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Research, Rhetoric, and the Cinematic Events of Cecil B. DeMille A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Satisfaction of the Requirement for the Degree of Doctor in Philosophy In Film and Television by Philip Joseph Wagner 2016 ©Copyright by Philip Joseph Wagner 2016 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Research, Rhetoric, and the Cinematic Events of Cecil B. DeMille By Philip Joseph Wagner Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television University of California, Los Angeles, 2016 Professor Chon A. Noriega, Chair This dissertation looks to the career of epic cinema pioneer Cecil B. DeMille in order to grasp the role of the research department in the Hollywood studio system. Situated at the intersections of three areas of study—scholarship on the form and social function of popular historical representation; theorizing on the archive as a site of knowledge production; and studies on film authorship that attend to the historical underpinnings of aesthetic choices—the dissertation explores the following questions in particular: What were the industrial standards on which studio researchers based the success and authenticity of their work? And what can we know about the research process as it relates to the production and reception of DeMille’s brand of spectacular cinema? ii I offer this study as an intervention into previous scholarship on research practice in Hollywood, which too often stresses cinema’s divergence from the factual record and draws a rigid binary between academia’s histories and the “unprofessional” ones derived from research departments. This study takes a different approach by examining a wider range of archival materials, including studio library circulation records, scaled prop sketches based on photographs and artifacts, and researcher correspondence with historical consultants and museum curators.

• 'The Imagined Sounds of Outer Space' (Wierzbicki)
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Sydney eScholarship You are currently viewing this page at 60% zoom. The page is optimised for 100%: not all elements on the page may look as intended. The Imagined Sounds of Outer Space James Wierzbicki Readers who know that I often write about film music – and that my publications include an article on the use of the electronic instrument called the theremin in depicting alien “Others” in Hollywood films from the 1950s (Wierzbicki 2002), a monograph on the score for the 1956 film Forbidden Planet (Wierzbicki 2005), and a book chapter on music in The Twilight Zone (Wierzbicki 2012) – might well suspect that this essay will focus on the imagined sounds of outer space as realized in the soundtracks of science-fiction films and television. Those imagined sounds are indeed my primary concerns here, but I will frame my thoughts with considerations of the imagined sounds of space as realized in music alone. The core of the essay deals in turn with depictions both literary and cinematic of signals from space, with cinematic sounds that in one way or another are linked to the technology of space exploration, with imagined sounds associated with “heavenly bodies” that might be visited by Earth-based astronauts, and with sounds that represent travel in and through outer space. This last category of sounds is, I think, especially interesting, because at least some of its cinematic exemplars seem to share basic elements with the “space music” of various composers for whom writing for the cinema was perhaps one of the furthest things from their minds.

• Ebook Free Oceans: Exploring the Hidden Depths of the Underwater World the Oceans Are the Single Most Important Feature of Our Planet
Ebook Free Oceans: Exploring The Hidden Depths Of The Underwater World The oceans are the single most important feature of our planet. They shape our climate, our culture, and our future. Yet their depths have remained a mysterious and unchartered expanse. This book, which accompanies a major BBC television series, draws on the most exciting stories from the fields of subaquatic archaeology, geology, marine biology, and anthropology to reveal an astonishing landscape of forgotten shipwrecks, submerged volcanoes, and hidden caves. For Oceans, explorer Paul Rose and his team of expert divers filmed fluorescence in Red Sea corals for the very first time and explored the undisturbed waters of the Black Hole off the Bahamas. They witnessed rarely seen behavior in sperm whales in the Sea of Cortez and discovered a potentially unknown species below the arctic ice pack. Undertaking thrilling and often dangerous dives, Rose and his team reveal the importance of the oceans to human existence—and at the same time trace the possible consequences of climate change on their delicate balance. Beautifully illustrated with more than 160 color photographs, Oceans unravels the mysteries of the deep and provides illuminating insights into this vast undersea domain."It is my sincere hope that this work will make more urgent the chorus of voices crying out to save the oceans."—From the foreword, by Philippe CousteauCopub: BBC Hardcover: 240 pages Publisher: University of California Press (April 15, 2009) Language: English ISBN-10: 0520260287 ISBN-13:
