Jommeke is a young boy who lives with his parents in Zonnedorp. He has no siblings, but he has a parrot named Flip who accompanies him everywhere. He is clever, honest, brave, loves adventure, and is recognizable by his distinct blonde haircut. Flip is Jommeke's sidekick. He is a parrot with a green body and red wings. He has the ability to speak like a human and is equally as smart or in several cases smarter than the average human. His real name is "Filipus", but he prefers "Flip". He is cool headed and has on several occasions saved the day using his wit and his unique abilities as a bird such as flying, using his beak and taking advantage of his small size to spy and sneak. Although his age is unspecified he has on a few rare occasions shown adult behavior by consuming alcohol and smoking cigares. He is also quite the womanizer, usually unsuccessful, because he's parrot and not a human. Jommeke's best friend, Filiberke joins him on most of his adventures. His pitch-black hair color contrasts nicely with the protagonist. He is creative, and a bit crazy too. Many albums start with Filiberke engaging in some crazy activity relating to the main story e. Often pretends to be sick, most to the annoyance of the other characters. He is often joined by his black poodle, Pekkie. An identical, blonde pony-tailed twin, also called "The Miekes". They are also good friends with Jommeke. Annemieke even has somewhat of a crush on Jommeke, and Rozemieke on Filiberke. The twins are little mothers, and love to take care of cooking and washing whenever it is needed. Their pet "Choco", a monkey they received as a gift, is named after its love for chocolate spread or choco in Flanders. The inventions of this good-hearted professor often give rise to weird situations. In many albums he invents a potion that accidentally gets mixed in Zonnedorp's water supply, thus affecting the entire population of the town. He is also notoriously confused, often stating exactly the opposite of what he means, only to correct it immediately afterwards. The main bad guy from the album. He is a butler , and comes up with many evil schemes to steal money from people. Two other bad guys that live in a hole dug in the ground of Zonnedorp's woods. Both are not able to pronounce words correctly, though each pronounces words incorrectly in a different way. The Main bad woman from the albums. She's a crazy old woman who wants to start her underworld by kidnapping children from the towns of Zonnedorp. In album 3 she gets taken prison by the angry parents of the children and brought to a mental institution. She escapes sometimes but Jommeke keeps on putting her back in the institution. As from album the queen of the underworld is released from the institution an she stays in her castle now. Apart from some editions for the Netherlands , Jommeke has been unsuccessfully translated into French, English, Finnish and Swedish. Maes August 2017 VISUAL MORPHOLOGY IN DUTCH AND FLEMISH COMICS 2 Abstract Comics are well-known for using speech balloons, motion lines and hearts above people’s heads. Amongst others, these visual forms (visual morphemes) belong to the vocabulary of visual languages, which is part of the underlying structure of a visual language. There are different visual languages, such as Japanese Visual Language used in manga and American Visual Language used in superhero comics. Despite the large comic tradition in Europe, the underlying structure of European comics has not been studied much, so the presence of a possible ‘European Visual Language’ or several different visual languages across Europe is unclear. Case studies have studied parts of the vocabulary of visual languages in European comics, but these only described a few morphemes. By examining the vocabulary in a corpus of 80 Dutch and Flemish comic books from the 1940s to the 2010s, this study established a catalogue of 155 different visual morphemes. Furthermore, the results showed a large degree of similarity between Dutch and Flemish comics with minimal variance across both cultures and across time, which implied that they belong to the similar visual language. This catalogue of morphemes could function as a starting point for additional studies on vocabulary of different visual languages.

De Loketten is het bezoekerscentrum van het Vlaams Parlement, waar jaarlijks duizenden burgers op een laagdrempelige manier in contact komen met onze assemblee. Alleen al de geleide bezoeken in het Vlaams Parlement lokken elk jaar zo’n 20.000 bezoekers. Hun rondleiding start en eindigt hier in dit bezoekerscentrum. De Loketten heeft naast een Eetcafé met geïntegreerde parlementswinkel, ook een tentoonstellingsruimte. De huidige striptentoonstelling is de zoveelste in een lange rij, want reeds sinds 2003 organiseert het Vlaams Parlement zelf één tentoonstelling per jaar. Daarnaast bieden wij ook externe organisatoren van tentoonstellingen de gelegenheid om van deze beschermde en gerestaureerde lokettenzaal van de voormalige ‘Postcheque’ gebruik te maken. Deze keer is het een speciale tentoonstelling omdat we samen met de Raad van de Vlaamse Gemeenschapscommissie een dubbeltentoonstelling opgezet hebben. Wij organiseren deze prachtige tentoonstelling over het beeldverhaal in onze Loketten. De RVGC doet hetzelfde in zijn gebouwen in de Lombardstraat in het centrum van Brussel. # over mag zijn.   • Willy Vandersteen, the Storyteller
    From 12 March until 1 September 2013 At the Belgian Comic Strip Center Willy Vandersteen, the storyteller Willy Vandersteen, the creator of Spike and Suzy and many other popular series which he drew himself for some years before entrusting them to his studio, was born in Antwerp on 15 February 1913, in the Seefhoek area, a paradise for artists and storytellers. Who could have guessed then that this son of a wood sculptor would one day become the equal of Hendrik Conscience, the most popular Flemish writer of his day? As a child Vandersteen dreamed of Buffalo Bill and Nick Carter, of Jules Verne and his first book Five Weeks in a Balloon. Later, through his comic strips from De Rode Ridder (The Red Knight) to the duo Robert en Bertrand, inspired by another favourite book from his childhood, Willy Vandersteen developed a graphic style which left ample room for narration. His stories, directly inspired by popular literature and serialised novels, are full of action and intrigue, while his humour is totally fearless of nonsensicality and the general context of his tales is one of social openness. With Willy Vandersteen, the comic strip is more than ever a literary genre.     CHAPTER NINE RACISM FOR BEGINNERS: CONSTRUCTIONS OF CHINESE IN Twentieth-CENTURY BELGIAN COMICS Idesbald Goddeeris Comics are amidst Belgium’s major export products. Some of them are world-famous and have been translated into dozens of languages: Hergé’s Tintin, Morris’ Lucky Luke, and Peyo’s Smurfs. Willy Vandersteen’s Suske and Wiske is known as Bob and Bobette in France, as Willy and Wanda in the U.S., as Spike and Suzy in the U.K., and as Ulla and Peter in Germany. Other comic characters have gained an equal popularity with generations of Belgian readers, albeit without having conquered an international read- ership: Jef Nys’ Jommeke, Marc Sleen’s Nero, and Merho’s Kiekeboe. News- papers published comics series every day for decades, using them as a competitive strategy for gaining more readers.1 On top of that, there were weekly magazines devoted to comics: Le Journal de Spirou published by the Dupuis company and Tintin published by the Studios Hergé. The stories only appeared in book form after they were serialized in newspapers. This peculiarly Belgian comic culture has admittedly declined in recent decades. Initially, one tried to stop the development by adapting televi- sion and movie characters into comic form (e.g. Willy Linthout’s and Urbanus’ Urbanus and Hec Leemans’ De kampioenen), but the internet seems to have dealt comics a serious blow. This loss of popularity has also been fueled by increasing ethnic diversity (immigrant children read far fewer post-war comics than native Belgian children) and the decreasing division of society and the media along Socialist, Catholic and other lines.
