Pbp 2019 Results RESULTS th WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE CITY OF RAMBOUILLET AND THE CONTROL TOWNS 18 - 22 AUGUST 2019 EDITOLast August, the organizers of the 19th edition of Paris- Brest-Paris Randonneur® installed their base camp in the vast green oasis of Rambouillet Castle Park. The site has a lot of character, even in the rain. No need to count the Bergerie Nationale sheep, they were far fewer than the thousands of riders and guests we welcomed. Under a clear sky, but with headwind, the riders, who had dreamed for years of this moment, were given the opportunity to head for Brest, and tackle a 1219 km long CONTENTS expedition, including 11,800 meters of climbing amount. A participation record was broken, but given the very (too) high rate of dropouts and out-of-time, the number PARIS-BREST-PARIS RANDONNEUR AS SEEN BY 4-9 of homologations is lower than in 2015. Thanks to their dedication and hours of attention each year we follow every rider’s progress throughout the race and catch issues that may come up. This can also help improve rider safety and allows us to act on any rule infringements in order to present a fair race. To try and suit as many people as possible we have created several options to choose from if you would like to get involved as a Dot Watcher: Casual Dot watcher. This dot watcher “Lite” volunteering requires the least commitment and allows you to check the map at your own convenience. We appreciate many people will be watching the dots as friends/family or simply fans of the sport.

At the time of writing our activities since March 2020 have been dominated by Covid-19 restrictions and continue to be so. Whilst planning is in place for the 2021 TT season which hopefully will commence in mid-March, nothing is guaranteed in these ever-changing times. We were able to celebrate 2019 successes with the Annual Trophy presentation being held at Freeland Village Hall, with a buffet supper catered by Paul Allday. Regrettably, the continuing uncertainty means we will not be holding a similar event in 2021, and the cancelling of many of our trophy events means that few will be awarded. 2020 TT League Of the completed events where Trophies can be awarded the results are: Tom Pearce Memorial, normally awarded for the (cancelled) Open 10 TT but reassigned to the Club 10 on the Hardwick course on 22nd July, was won by Dan Blake.

These extremely demanding races provide a unique opportunity for field observation as to the limits of human endurance physiology and importantly, when these limits might be exceeded, and crossover into pathology. The heart is of special interest in this field and previous data suggest 'reverse drift' of heart rate occurs as a product of time and load in races of 24 - 48 hrs, whilst transient structural abnormalities have been observed upon completion of running ultramarathons. Here, we report a unique case of a male cyclist racing in the Transcontinental Race over an extended period of 14 days characterised by extreme workloads and low quantity and quality of sleep. Heart rate response was dynamic over the course of the race and defined by a U-shaped quadratic relationship. It includes continuing the robotic assay of the solar system while pressing the human frontier beyond cislunar space, with Mars as an ob- vious destination. The primary challenge is propulsion. For human voyages beyond Mars (and perhaps to Mars), the refinement of nuclear fission as a power source and propulsive means will likely set the limits to optimal deep space propulsion for the foreseeable future. Costs, driven largely by access to space, continue to stall significant advances for both manned and unmanned missions. While there continues to be a hope that commercialization will lead to lower launch costs, the needed technology, initial capital investments, and markets have con- tinued to fail to materialize. Hence, initial development in deep space will likely remain govern- ment sponsored and driven by scientific goals linked to national prestige and perceived security issues. Against this backdrop, we consider linkage of scientific goals, current efforts, expecta- tions, current technical capabilities, and requirements for the detailed exploration of the solar system and consolidation of off-Earth outposts.
